Tony Wilson's Most Anticipated Game of 2019: Kingdom Hearts 3

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

It's all led to this.

With 2019 right around the corner, we've polled GameSpot's staff to find out what games they are looking forward to most in the new year. To be eligible, a game must simply have a release date currently planned for 2019. Of course, we all know nothing is set in stone; there's always a chance some games could slip into 2020. When you're done reading this entry, follow along with all of our other end-of-the-year coverage collected in our Best of 2018 hub.

Kingdom Hearts 3 is set to conclude the Dark Seeker saga, a story that began with the original Kingdom Hearts way back in 2002. Kingdom Hearts 2, the last numbered entry, came in 2005. Over the past 13 years, the series has seen numerous spin-offs across multiple console and handheld generations, and the story has only gotten bigger and more complicated. Kingdom Hearts 3 has the unenviable task of wrapping up 16 years of lore, and for that reason, I cannot wait to play it.

Now Playing: Kingdom Hearts III - 'Final Battle' Official Trailer

This will be the first time our Avengers-esque team of heroes is fully assembled. Childhood friends Sora, Riku, and Kairi; Keyblade trainees Aqua, Terra, and Ventus; and even Mickey Mouse himself are gathering for a final battle against Xehanort. And if those names mean nothing to you, you can see why over a decade of games has made the lore a bit convoluted.

It's not just the conclusion of a story that has me excited for Kingdom Hearts 3, though. We'll be revisiting fan-favorite Disney worlds like Pirates of the Caribbean's Port Royale and Winnie the Pooh's 100 Acre Wood, and we'll also be exploring a host of never-before-seen levels. We've seen worlds inspired by Frozen, Tangled, Toy Story, Big Hero 6, and Monsters Inc., and each one gives our heroes a new look and set of special attacks.

Speaking of which, combat has a few new hooks in Kingdom Hearts 3 as well. You can run up walls a la Dream Drop Distance, and Sora can even summon Disney theme park rides like Thunder Mountain Railroad and the Spinning Tea Cups to deal heavy damage to the Heartless horde. This is on top of unique weapon transformations based on the Disney world you're currently in. I've enjoyed Kingdom Hearts' fusion of real-time combat and menu-based spellcasting in the past, and based on my time playing the Toy Story and Hercules stages at E3 2018, I'll add that it feels better than ever.

That show was the last time we went hands-on with Kingdom Hearts 3, but we'll get a chance to experience the whole adventure on PS4 and Xbox One on January 29, 2019. If it's the complete saga you're after, you can grab Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far and experience the entire franchise. And if you'd rather spend far less time getting hyped for the new one, you can enjoy the game's opening song, courtesy of Skrillex and the returning Utada Hikaru.

"you can enjoy the game's opening song, courtesy of Skrillex and the returning Utada Hikaru."

Well, part of it. We got a Trailer FOR the opening, not the opening itself. There's more song and more video to be seen when the game comes out.

But real talk if anyone out there is too intimidated to play through The Story So Far (single $40 PS4 box, has the stories from all 9 main games), then I HIGHLY STRONGLY SUPERBLY IMPERATIVELY recommend watching Everglow's Kingdom Hearts Timeline on Youtube. It's more than just a string of cutscenes, and it's not just a commentary-free playthrough. With the magic of editing and plot-mastery, and the power of Disney and Anime, Everglow has constructed a bottom-to-top Chronological masterpiece of the entire story of Kingdom Hearts from start to finish.

It gets especially impressive when he starts splicing together simultaneous events, like in 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage coinciding with KH1, as well as Roxas's story in Days, etc. Or the entirety of Birth By Sleep. It's really quite special. Having loved and played the entire saga on every console as it came out, Everglow managed to make Kingdom Hearts feel exciting and new again, something I didn't think would be possible.

And so here's a link to the Playlist, starting on the first episode. If you haven't kept up closely, you can count on hearing new names and meeting new people, but don't let it scare you. It's really not a lot. You can do it. It'll be worth it. I promise.

I am still bewildered that we live in a Timeline where Kingdom Hearts III actually exists and is barely a little more than a month away. I've heard its theme song and seen parts of its opening movie... unreal. It's so unreal, and I am so indescribably excited. <3

@kaiiboraka: You're kidding with this, 100+ episodes of 30min-1hr? That's got to be days of viewing. Might as well play the games then.

@Destructionzz: actually most of the episodes are 15-25 minutes until you get to the most recent ones for KH2, which are very specifically a lot longer because KH2 is extremely linear and full of cutscenes, so he's making longer episodes to contain whole world chapters at a time so he can keep om pace to be finished by the time KH3 drops.

Not to mention the fact that watching 1 or 2 self contained YouTube videos is a lot easier to pick up and do at any time than making time to sit at home im front of your TV and play the games, which involves a whole heckuva lot more stuff than just story beats (which is what Timeline is exclusively).

Watch one on your break at work. Put it on your phone or second monitor while you're at your computer doing something else. Put it on your tablet while you're doing the dishes. If you are just trying to get the whole story before LH3, then having the entire story in one very portable easy access place beats out sitting down to play, every time.
