"Too Early To Say" How Many OG Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Games There Will Be

"There will be a library of games available, for sure."

One of the biggest announcements Microsoft made at E3 2017 was backwards compatibility support for original Xbox games on Xbox One. The console already plays Xbox 360 games through backwards compatibility, and the library of supported titles is pretty massive, recently having surpassed 385 games. But will the lineup of OG Xbox games be as big? It's "too early to say," according to Microsoft's Dave McCarthy, but it sounds like it will not be.

Speaking to GameSpot, McCarthy said Microsoft only talked about Crimson Skies and Fuzion Frenzy at E3, but there are more games up and running.

No Caption Provided

"We have multiple games up and running--we just decided to tease the first one[s]," McCarthy explained. "There will be a library of games available, for sure."

This follows what Xbox boss Phil Spencer said earlier this month. He outright confirmed that the lineup of OG Xbox games played on Xbox One through backwards compatibility will not be as extensive as the library of Xbox 360 games that work on the newer console.

In our interview with McCarthy, he said Spencer played a huge role in convincing the engineering team to add backwards compatibility support for Xbox 360 games on Xbox One. The team wasn't sure it was possible at the start, apparently, but Spencer kept pressing the matter and the engineering team found a way. It's the same engineering team doing the work for OG Xbox backwards compatibility.

"Phil is really good for this, in terms of audacious challenges we give the team," McCarthy said. "It fit nicely into our compatibility story--games will play great across all our lineup. They'll play best on Xbox One X. It kind of fit the whole vibe that we were trying to get in terms of choice for our customers. It is going to be a big program for us."

The OG Xbox backwards compatibility program for Xbox One launches later this year. What titles would you like to see added the library? Let us know in the comments below!

@graffitiheart: skip kotor and jade empire. Both are on PC and run just fine on pretty much anything from the last 10 years. I know those were two big xbox titles but the PC versions are just superior and if there is only going to be a limited number of titles done I'd rather they spend that time on a couple of games people can't play elsewhere and better. I mean heck there is even a really solid port of kotor on mobile/tablets. Not to mention a pretty solid modding community on PC.

@Devil_wings00: I think why I'd like it still on Xbox one is because I still to this day have the disc's for all the games mentioned (barring splinter cell I think). But in theory I agree, I'd rather they concentrate on games that were full OG Xbox exclusives.

@Devil_wings00: Yet you miss the entire point of those being made BC... NOT HAVING TO BUY THEM AGAIN FOR A DIFFERENT SYSTEM. Also many people have no interest in PC or mobile gaming.

@dlCHIEF58: That's the thing though, most likely you have a PC anyway, and these games will run on anything from the last two decades, not to mention they've been on sale numerous times (if not outright given away).

@Attitude2000: and you also miss the point. I already have games on Xbox so why would I want to buy them again? Furthermore you make assumptions that we all use Windows based PCs, I use Macs or Linux. I also have little interest in gaming on a PC, and I am not alone in that regard.

@Devil_wings00: What if you don't have a PC? Although the games won't look as good, it's still a good option to play them on Xbox One as you'll have the Live features to utilise (such as party chat).

@Attitude2000: Most people use their phones to browse the web. Tablets and 2 in 1s are the biggest growth markets for PC. The days of firing up a tower PC to go on Facebook are over, haven't you noticed?

@Attitude2000: What you are not understanding is that if he/she has the games already and it is BC why should one rush out and buy a device which does cost money to play something you already have and it is free. I myself own Original Xbox games and I would like to play on the newer systems. I also have some of the games on pc as well but sometimes I do not feel like powering up my PCs and I have an itch to play on the console, it is also a matter of choice.

@Attitude2000: They're fine to use if that's what you prefer, but playing on the big screen on a dedicated console is a better option I think. I don't mind using my Surface connected to my TV, but the experience is better on the Xbox.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of XB1 gaming hours are old games. I don't know anybody who does it, my group of friends clear out old games with old systems.

@kyelo: I guess you ALSO missed the correction they had to put up where all their figures were off by a degree of magnitude, making their whole "study" worthless.

@kyelo: No, that is TOTAL usage time not gaming time. Those hours they use in there also include App usage like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and other miscellaneous app usage. It is not by any means a good or scientific analysis.

@kyelo: Which is why it's not smart to measure this by a percentage, and exactly why MSoft is smart to push this. If you're selling a console and platform, you want lots of activity and numbers. But as those numbers grow, if you go strictly by percentage, then the gamers become less important individually. It's easy to get this "I don't care about a measly 1 million gamers any more; there are 60 million more," attitude that Jim Ryan seems to have developed.

508 million hours is 508 million hours, and it's a reflection that MSoft is actually catering to those gamers as well; even though they are only 1.5% of the total. Besides, it's never a bad thing to make more of your games available and to validate the investment people have made in the past. It's quite a good thing.

Sony seemed to understand this when they made the PS2. It was backward compatible with PS1. Those days are gone.

Well, if they pull from the pool of titled made bc for the 360, then there are 554 to choose from. Those are most likely the types of titles they would target at least, so...

@Mirimon78: Not necessarily as those were ones that were easier for them to emulate on the 360 which used a PowerPC/RISC chip and they obviously aren't going to go through two layers of emulation to accomplish this. Since the One and original Xbox use the same base architecture emulation is easier and opens up more possibilities for potential titles. And none of those would have had licensing issues (on the 360) since they all ran from the original media instead of having to be redistributed on a console they were never licensed to be distributed on (as well as the length of time resulting in many licenses expiring).

@Mirimon78: And as I explained that is not necessarily true due to the differences between the CPUs in the One and the 360, as well as licensing issues that would have cropped up in the time since then. Your statement would only ring true is they were using the same emulation process, which they are obviously not.

I honestly don't remember many XBox games that I liked that I don't or can't play on PC (e.g., some of my favorites were Morrowind, KOTOR, Battlefront, Jade Empire). I know there are some more obscure things people loved, but for me I spent most of my time on multiplats. I think the biggest value here in this is things like Shenmue 2 and other DC ports+follow-ups (although - rumors swirl that Shenmue 2 may be available in a better form on PC one of these days, but who knows)
