"Too Early To Say" How Many OG Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Games There Will Be

"There will be a library of games available, for sure."

One of the biggest announcements Microsoft made at E3 2017 was backwards compatibility support for original Xbox games on Xbox One. The console already plays Xbox 360 games through backwards compatibility, and the library of supported titles is pretty massive, recently having surpassed 385 games. But will the lineup of OG Xbox games be as big? It's "too early to say," according to Microsoft's Dave McCarthy, but it sounds like it will not be.

Speaking to GameSpot, McCarthy said Microsoft only talked about Crimson Skies and Fuzion Frenzy at E3, but there are more games up and running.

"We have multiple games up and running--we just decided to tease the first one[s]," McCarthy explained. "There will be a library of games available, for sure."

This follows what Xbox boss Phil Spencer said earlier this month. He outright confirmed that the lineup of OG Xbox games played on Xbox One through backwards compatibility will not be as extensive as the library of Xbox 360 games that work on the newer console.

In our interview with McCarthy, he said Spencer played a huge role in convincing the engineering team to add backwards compatibility support for Xbox 360 games on Xbox One. The team wasn't sure it was possible at the start, apparently, but Spencer kept pressing the matter and the engineering team found a way. It's the same engineering team doing the work for OG Xbox backwards compatibility.

"Phil is really good for this, in terms of audacious challenges we give the team," McCarthy said. "It fit nicely into our compatibility story--games will play great across all our lineup. They'll play best on Xbox One X. It kind of fit the whole vibe that we were trying to get in terms of choice for our customers. It is going to be a big program for us."

The OG Xbox backwards compatibility program for Xbox One launches later this year. What titles would you like to see added the library? Let us know in the comments below!

The original Xbox seems awfully difficult to emulate.

@Barighm: In principle, it's actually fairly easy - the OG Xbox is essentially just a Pentium 3 PC with an NVIDIA GPU. Slightly different in terms of emulation to the 360 (which effectively contains the operating system embedded in each game's individual code), but certainly a more 'traditional' emulation target. The hard part comes with getting the games licensed to run on it - quite a few of the original producers are no longer around.

@TwinStripeUK: BS. If it's so easy then why aren't there any good emulators?

@superklyph: That is due to the custom nVidia video card used. And there is a good emulator, it is called the Xbox 360 (LOL!).

But technically it should be much easier to get an original Xbox emulator running on the One than it was on the 360 (and easier than the 360 emulator on the One), especially for Microsoft who are familiar with the original design inside and out. But the OP is wrong about one thing, this will use a similar solution like what was done for 360 BC on the One in that it WILL also include the emulator and OS with each and every title. That is a little unfortunate since then it will limit title availability due to licensing issues (which would not exist if running from the original media), but the advantage is each game will have the emulator specifically tuned to each game for better performance.

@Barighm: PS3 is ridiculously hard to emulate and one of the hardest consoles to emulate in history with only SEGA Saturn being more so yet even now the community is leagues ahead of where Xbox emulation reached. Emulation for consoles is always hard when they start out. The reason Xbox doesn't have proper emulation is solely due to lack of wide interest in the community. As it stands only Sony, Nintendo and SEGA platforms have huge communities for that. Even then, N64, Sega Saturn and PS2 emulation still leave a lot to be desired.

@xOmniCloudx:

Xbox was emulated.....on the 360. Therefore there was no need to create an emulator when the best emulator already existed. No one can make a better emulator thant the creator of the original console (in theory anyway)

It is just too bad emulation wasn't 95-100%. There were still some games missing, but all the "important" games were BC.

@TightNinja: Um, every full fledged emulator that has ever existed outperformed both the original hardware as well as the emulators provided by the original creators. Makes sense because the original creators use their emulators to give you an experience as close to the original game as possible and are also limited by licensing issues with third parties.

So, an entire library will NEVER be available for emulation by any company thus will ALWAYS have less options than a fully supported fan emulator which disregards legal issues of all kinds. Fan emulators also allow you options the games never originally had such as higher resolution/new resolution support, mods and even online play for games that never had them originally (I personally play Soul Calibur 2 and Super Smash Bros Melee online on Dolphin emulator which are options these versions of the games don't have anywhere else).

Seeing that, Xbox being emulated on 360 means nothing since you're restricted by what MS emulated which wasn't very many titles anyway and many of them were poorly emulated or had game breaking issues as well showing that even MS sucked at making a quality emulator for their own hardware. Plus MS never cared to fix any of the games with issues in their emulator. If fans cared enough to make a proper Xbox emulator, you could get access to the entire library on top of gaining the typical options that come with emulator, fix game breaking issues and far outperform the MS Xbox emulator in options alone.

Literally all I want is Timesplitters: Future Perfect. Please please please please.

I realise that it's unlikely though. It wasn't even BC on the Xbox 360.

@nativepixel: Frankly, you're better off just getting the PC versions. You can get them on GoG for a few bucks each.

@Barighm: The point with BC is you do not have to buy the games again if you already own them. Furthermore many people have no desire to game on PC or mobile devices.

Any of these would be great. The Godfather, Darkwatch, BloodRayne, BloodRayne 2,, Doom 3 (for the Doom 2 Master Levels), Mercenaries. Serious Sam, Serious Sam II, The Suffering, The Suffering: Ties That Bind.

@Brettsky128: Still hoping they can somehow work out licensing rights for remastering Shenmue II along with Shenmue III.
