Too Soon to Say if Battleborn Will Be a Borderlands-Like Hit, Take-Two Says

The game is off to an "encouraging" start, CEO Strauss Zelnick says.

Borderlands developer Gearbox Software's recently released shooter Battleborn is off to an "encouraging" start, but it's too soon to say if it will enjoy the kind of success Borderlands had.

That's according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, who spoke about the early reaction to Battleborn during an earnings call today.

No Caption Provided

"The initial results are very encouraging. [But] it is early yet," he said. "The scores are good, consumers like it, a lot of people playing it and really loving the gameplay. But I wouldn't want you to draw the conclusion that the Battleborn curve is necessarily the Borderlands curve. We just don't have any of that information yet."

Earlier this month, Battleborn creative director Randy Varnell said the game enjoyed a "solid" start and was in fact tracking ahead of the early numbers for Borderlands. He added that Borderlands had something of a slow start, but sales eventually accelerated, and surmised that the same could be true for Battleborn.

Borderlands is now one of 2K's crown jewels, but it is too soon to say if the same will be true for Battleborn.

"We're encouraged, and we feel good about it, [but] it remains to be seen how it performs," Zelnick said about the game.

The first Borderlands sold 2 million copies in its first two months back in 2009, and went on to sell 7 or 8 million copies in its lifetime, according to Varnell.

Battleborn debuted at the top of the charts in the UK during its launch week. However, it remains to be seen how well the game has sold in North America.

In February, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said Battleborn represents the company's "biggest investment" ever, calling the game a "big bet."

"We've invested more than Borderlands 1 and 2 added together into Battleborn," he said at the time. "And we don't even know if people will be interested or not."

In other news about Battleborn, Gearbox said at PAX East this year that the game's DLC will include references to Borderlands 3.

I hope it does well, it's a great game. As a fan of games like Smite and Team Fortress 2, this game manages to fit nicely in between without making itself redundant.

The biggest issue I see is the poor matchmaking. It doesn't take long and all to group up players on PS4, but it seems to do so arbitrarily. My group of 5 level 20-50s should not be matched with a bunch of individual 5-20s. They do have the option of declining the match, which helps, but I do feel bad for the teams that don't. They get stomped, and I don't want to discourage people from playing just because the matchmaking is poor.

Translation: It's not doing too well, so we're on damage control. A quick look over at Steam shows that its languishing in 80th place in the daily stats.

good game or not...have to say their launch window is pretty stupid...they bring us a new ip and co inside its release with a new ip from Blizzard which just happens to be quiet similar to theirs....also no marketing is never good.

i feel sad for this game.

@GregoryBastards: Why do they need to abide by what others are doing? They announced their game first and they decided to release their game first?

The only valid point you made was lack of advertising but then again most of Overwatches publicity has been about Tracer having a ass.

@GregoryBastards: It's impossible to say that for certain. Every month now this year has two or so big AAA titles.
http://www.vg247.com/2016/05/11/video-game-release-dates-2016/

2K just needs to drastically change how they do things. They got lucky with a bunch of good titles last gen but that luck isn't going to work for everything as we've already seen from them numerous times now.

Im enjoying the game. But with a lack of local multiplayer games its in my favor by default. The matchmaking needs some serious work. It is a really fun game but needs more levels. You have to dig for things to make sense which is both frustrating and fun once things fall into place by unlocking each characters lore. If you are on the fence on this one I would wait for more content and the matchmaking to be sorted as it is completely broken at this point. No where near the caliber of borderlands but worth every penny as i play the hell out of it.

Borderlands was 1 - 4 players. So even if no one else liked it you could at least enjoy it and people could continue to buy and enjoy it WAY after the release.

Multiplayer games always go downhill eventually. Which considering the single player in this is lame, if this is only "encouraging" now chances are that isn't going to improve and will only get worse every month.

When do developers ever say something is off to an 'encouraging' start? doesn't sound too great. Either way, I guess it looks okay if you are into the niche part of gaming, but meh. I just want Borderlands 3.

Jeez people were dumb enough to drop $60 on this? Gearbox apparently said "lets make a game that somehow looks worse than Borderlands with even more repetitive gameplay, environments, charge $60, and see if we can get a way with it".

Glad I only paid 30 bucks for it. The game got old fast, the campaign felt meh... Overall it felt like a F2P that we had to actually buy.

Found the game very disappointing overall and feel sorry for the players that got roped up into what feels like a experiment by gearbox (fix as we go!). The Highlight of the game is the characters but the modes available get old very fast. For those interested in this game wait for price drop and avoid thinking about the Borderland games while playing (their so much better). As for me I'll be avoiding the Battleborn season pass and not touching anything more from gearbox unless it says "Borderlands 3".

Game's shit, that's what happens when devs try to rake in quick money by making garbage "esports" games, they deserve to fail.

Played the Beta; I think the game is more fun than Overwatch. Both seem to lack content for a $60 game, though.

Did not hear anything about this until very recently. I thought it was an indie game.

On the otherhand, I was not a fan of Borderlands, seemed interesting at first, but then I felt like I was playing Diablo in first person, so I quit pretty early. Nice art and wacky stuff though.

@ACMC85: But... "Diablo in first-person" was exactly their intention with Borderlands. Pretty sure they call it a looter-shooter themselves.

All they gotta do is eventually make a big update with 5 new characters, where they drop the price to $30-40, with a 25% sale dropping it to $22-30, and do a free weekend at the same time.

The problem is they completely forgot to market this game. The day it came out on Steam, it didn't even have its own header and I think it wasn't even in the Featured slideshow thing. So right now, I think the only people who bought the game are those who really enjoyed the beta, like myself. Heck, I think most people don't even know this game came out. Having a stealth release during Overwatch's open beta was not smart (though Blizzard is to blame for this).

@Tiwill44: Can't believe people are still blaming Blizzard even though the game itself just isn't good. From playing the full version myself it feels like a mishmash of better mobas and shooters I played in recent years. I'll admit first time playing it things looked promising but after a while found myself wanting to play Borderlands (or any of the ftp mobas out) with better content. Also not a good sign your suggesting they drop the price of their game even though it hasn't been out more than a month. So lets try not to act as this game is a breakout hit that the big bad Overwatch overshadowed (cuz its not).

@fatjoe400: I meant Blizzard intentionally started their open beta the day Battleborn came out, to steal all the attention. I'm only blaming Blizzard for that specific move, not for the entire thing.

@Tiwill44Not sure thats the case after playing Battleborn after release (yet to play Overwatch). From what i heard Battleborn was rushed out early and it certainly shows from what i played. Though i could see Blizzard doing it since they really going all out to make Overwatch popular ip.

This could be tough. Borderlands grew as a franchise from positive word of mouth and people getting their friends to play with them. With a zany but small cast of characters that played relatively the same, it was easy to pick up and enjoy by most people.

Battleborn is nearly the opposite. First impressions by a lot of people are negative as it's actually pretty challenging. But it also has a lot of depth. If passionate fans can convince people on the fence to invest the necessary time to overcome the steep learning curve, it *could* do well.

But assuming it will have the same sales experiences as Borderlands is setting up the wrong expectations.

@southsouthsac: FYI even the good games that do amazing go $40 like the week after release.

Obviously this game didn't do that well from them being so vague but price has nothing to do with anything.

This isn't a game for me given that as far as I know they're charging full price for a multiplayer only game and that is just not interesting to me. It remains to be seen if the multiplayer crowd likes it or not enough to make it a hit, though. That's gonna be a tough hill to climb if I had to guess.

I don't know for a fact, as other similar games didn't do so hot, but it might do better as a F2P game. Maybe, I don't know that for sure. It just seems like the younger audience that tends to be into these games would be more into it if it were free. Because they don't like initially paying for stuff.
