Top 10 Best Selling Games In The US During March 2017

Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Wildlands leads the way.

The NPD Group today released its report for March 2017, revealing the top 10 best-selling games of the month for the United States and other key industry facts.

Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Wildlands was the best-selling game overall during the five-week reporting period that ran February 26 through April 1. This is the first reporting period to include Sony's Horizon: Zero Dawn, which launched on February 28. Sony's PS4-exclusive landed in the No. 4 spot for March, behind Mass Effect: Andromeda (No. 3) and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (No. 2).

You can see all of the top-seller lists NPD shared below. As is now the case every month, these lists are ranked by US dollar sales and combine physical sales with digital sales from select publishers (absences include Nintendo and Sony). All figures in this post do not cover the entire industry spend.

Overall, total video game spending--across hardware, software, and accessories--improved year-over-year, rising 24 percent to over $1.3 billion. In a statement, NPD Group analyst Sam Naji said the launch of the Nintendo Switch on March 3 and a number of big-name games helped spending improve.

This uptick in sales is notable, as total physical sales had previously declined every month for the past year months.

For hardware specifically, the Nintendo Switch outsold the PS4 and Xbox One in March. Total US hardware sales "almost doubled" Naji said, rising to $485 million.

"March 2017 will go down in history books as the month Nintendo broke records," Naji explained. "The Nintendo Switch had the biggest hardware launch for a Nintendo platform and the second biggest launch for any video game platform since 1995, the time NPD began tracking this category."

The Switch sold 906,000 units in the US during March, which is 31,000 more than Nintendo's previous record-holder for first-month sales--the Game Boy Advance back in 2001.

Specifically, the Switch's Gray model was the best-selling console of March 2017, followed by the Neon Red/Blue version.

As Nintendo itself announced, Breath of the Wild sales have reached 1.3 million units across Switch and Wii U. The Switch version sold over 900,000 physical copies, giving the game an attach rate of 99 percent for Switch hardware. "This is the highest attach rate for any non-bundled title for a new gaming platform since NPD began tracking in 1995," Naji said.

As for the month's best-selling game, Wildlands, it had the best launch of any Ghost Recon game ever, Naji said. It's not the best start for a Tom Clancy game, however, as that distinction goes to The Division.

The highly anticipated Andromeda, which finished March in the No. 3 position, failed to eclipse Mass Effect 3, which continues to hold the record for best launch, according to the NPD. And as for Horizon: Zero Dawn, the month's fourth best-selling game, it was developer Guerrilla's "best launch ever," Naji said, noting it sold "twice as much" as PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall, the previous record-holder.

Horizon Zero Dawn was the fourth best-selling title for the month. Developed by Guerrilla Games, this was the developer's best launch ever, selling twice as much as its next best title, Killzone Shadow Fall.

So basically this list is pointless for some games- like Horizon, cause it doesnt list digital sales. Good validity here.

So basically every other game on the switch bomb just like in japan. Nintendo better hope Activision does not cut the switch on wednesday again like they did with Bungie's game (and WB already did)

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is going to be there for a while. This is the best game of this generation and arguably the greatest adventure game ever created. The Switch is a perfectly balanced concept. It delivers enough tech power and then you have Zelda BOTW that provides proof that game design, not teraflops, are what truly matter. Nintendo messed up with the Wii U, but has bounced back beautifully with the Switch and their upcoming pipeline of great software! What a comeback!

@xybuttons: ROFL of course Zelda is.

I don´t know what drugs Nintendo has discovered by they need to share it with the rest of the developers.

@Jacanuk:

My best guess is you need not look further than the Mushroom Kingdom to find that drug. Oh. And they have also worked insanely hard at their craft for decades and have some of the most dedicated developers on the planet!

Just realized/just paid attention that these ranks are based on amount of money gained, not copies sold. Though because most games on the list are new releases it probably doesn't matter...too much. Anyways glad kingdom hearts is #5 on ps4 list.

The only thing that could ever shock me in one of the top 10 sellers lists is if GTAV doesn't appear.

i'm curious if these "sales" are fluffed by the fact that:

anyone who buys a pc gpu gets a free copy/code of either 'gr wildlands' or 'for honor', which are coincidentally the top 2 games "sold" in 2017 so far...

@wowgrandpa: Is there any particular reason why so many people would buy GPUs this March? :/

@livedreamplay: the free game offer has been around since before March.

but to answer you question about March:

the price on gtx 1080 got heavily slashed...

and the gtx1080ti was available for pre-order.

and the other nvidia series cards sell well every month of the year... no occasion required.

@wowgrandpa: I actually just got Wildlands today for that very reason. Not sure if I'll ever play it.

Anyway, given the cost of new GPU that qualify (1060s and up, I think), I doubt those games are seeing a meaningful bump for those "sales."

I’m somewhat surprised by Wildlands' place atop the sales charts this month but at the same time I’m not (wait… what?). Initially I thought that Mass effect, despite the less than stellar reviews, would snag the top spot just on name alone what with being a AAA multiplatform title and all.

It wasn’t until a few people on here pointed out that despite Wildlands shortcomings it, unlike many of the titles on this list, was given a major boost thanks to an abundance of media coverage mainly in the form of T.V/commercial spots. I personally don’t watch much T.V so Wildlands wasn’t even on my radar but it just goes to show what kind of impact strategic marketing can have.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of this latest Ghost Recon Ubisoft should be commended for doing what some might say was the unthinkable, namely beating out a slew of juggernaut AAA titles in the way of BOTW, Mass effect, Horizon Zero Dawn (technically it launched in February but anyways…) and even to some extent Nier: Automata. Heck, it makes you actually wonder just how many copies Wildlands shifted.

All I know is that there’s more than one developer that’s going to be celebrating tonight.

@videogameninja: Why do you feel the need to self-validate your posts at the end with some lame quip? Low self-esteem? Definitely giving off a fedora/neckbeard vibe. But if that is what you are going for, then you do you, and you are rocking it.

Halo Wars 2 completely absent even in the Top 20. Wow.

Glad to hear though that starting next month, Microsoft's digital sales will be reflected in the software charts. Could be good PR to show their games are doing better than the perception.

@khfreak9: The stuff that defines a truly good game even less (in fact much less) than critical scores are the sales figures, I mean you don't judge films by their box office figures alone do you?

PS: Well done to Horizon for being the only new IP in the charts against established franchises with decades of histories behind them.

@xz239: I don't doubt that sales have nothing to do with quality. What is freaking me out the most is that with sales like these Ubisoft are sure to continue with this pattern. And by pattern I mean make big and boring open world games with few/repetitive activities. :(

@livedreamplay: That's a valid concern which I share of course. Unfortunately as long as people constantly talk about this kind of games in the corridors of high schools, Ubisoft and EA will continue grinning ear to ear. I'm actually also rather more concerned about Mass Effect Andromeda reaching such high spots too, which shouldn't occur until they've at least patched up most of the cracks in the game.

@xz239: Oddly, I'm not that concerned about Andormeda. Yes they're doing well, but they know they've wasted a lot of money with those cancelled preorders and backlash, next time they'll release a game, I doubt they won't avoid that and polish it up, and although they messed up with the glitches the combat is very solid and the whole exploration idea is done pretty well. However Ghost Recon is a bad game overall, and nobody is batting an eye, it's selling like crazy.

@khfreak9: If you think about it, it's not so surprising. For one thing, it's not such a bad game as many make it out to be. It's not amazing or anything, but there is fun to be had. On top of that, it got a lot of hype and marketing leading up to release. Plus it was released on just about every platform except the Nintendo boxes (WiiU and Switch).
