Top-10 Best Selling Games in the US During November 2016

Here's how the game industry did in the United States last month.

November is traditionally one of the biggest months of the year for video game sales. While that was certainly true again this year--total sales in the US were $1.97 billion, compared with $875.7 million in October--sales were down significantly compared with last year.

That $1.97 billion is a 24 percent drop from November 2015, when total sales were $2.6 billion. The bulk of that comes from the 35 percent decline in hardware sales ($723.8 million, down from $1.12 billion). Portable hardware grew--3DS sales were up 59 percent year-over-year--but that was offset by PS4 and Xbox One declines. No specific sales figures were shared except for the NES Classic Edition, which sold 196,000 units.

Total spending on accessories was down only 6 percent to $259.8 million from $277.1 million. Interactive gaming toys (covering things like Lego Dimensions, Skylanders, and Amiibo figures) were down 49 percent. The overall category was likely boosted by the inclusion of PlayStation VR headsets sold at retail. The DualShock 4 was the month's top-selling controller, while Xbox One Elite controller sales were up 46 percent year-over-year.

Software sales were down as well, declining 18 percent to $955.2 million from $1.17 billion.

"The year-on-year software revenue decline was driven by the strong comp to last November’s top 3 titles: Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4, and Star Wars Battlefront, which were all full-priced console new releases," said NPD analyst Sam Naji. "This month's top 3 games were Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Battlefield 1, and Pokemon: Sun. Battlefield 1 launched in October, and Pokemon Sun launched at a lower MSRP than last November's console games. As all titles outside of the top 3 grew a combined 12 percent vs. year ago, it is the top 3 title grouping that drove the year-on-year decline."

CNBC recently reported that the NPD Group had found that Infinite Warfare sales were roughly half those of last year's Black Ops III, which might explain the drop.

No Caption Provided

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, despite its aforementioned struggles, still reached the top spot on the NPD's sales charts. Dishonored 2 is the biggest November release to not make the top 10; Final Fantasy XV, which also didn't chart, was released on November 29, after the NPD's report period ended on November 26.

The full top 10 software list follows at the bottom of this story. As has been the case in recent months, the NPD's top software charts include digital sales for some, but not all games. Games are also now ranked in terms of dollar sales, rather than unit sales as in the past.

"Software spending in November 2016 declined by 19 percent compared to this time last year," Naji explained. "The decline can be fully attributed to the top 3 selling games which, combined, sold 43 percent less than the top 3 games from last November. Combined spending across all other titles grew 12 percent in November compared with a year ago."

Naji also noted that 3DS had its "highest monthly physical software spending in the history of the platform," topping December 2014 by 1 percent. Pokemon Sun and Moon combined for the franchise's biggest launch ever (which Nintendo had already claimed). They combined to sell 8 percent more than the previous record holders, White and Black. Naji pointed out this is despite Sun and Moon having 19 fewer days on the market.

In a statement shared with GameSpot, Nintendo added that Pokemon Sun and Moon claimed the top two spots on the NPD's best-seller list for the month (as opposed to the top-grossing list seen below). It also said the games helped increase 3DS software sales 350 percent year-over-year, and that software sales for the year are up nearly 60 percent.

Last week, we learned that the PS4 was November's top-selling console in the US. This broke a four-month streak where the Xbox One had come out on top, a trend which itself had broken a long run of the PS4 leading the way.

Sony declined to comment on the NPD report beyond confirming the top spot. Microsoft focused on "strong momentum" since the announcement of the Xbox One S and strong Xbox Live numbers.

These physical software numbers are so silly. It's sort of like TV's Neilsen ratings. They don't accurately measure sales because they don't include digital download sales, which, for some games now represent more profit then physical boxing.

For example, Battlefield 1 concurrent player count on all systems per BF1stats : 532,533 (currently), compared to COD :IF 97,533 (currently).

YET, COD gets #1 place in sales, even though it was outsold, entirely by battlefield 1.

This system is dated. In 10 years, nobody will be buying boxed games. It's not convenient.

@dlaney34: I don't know about that hard copy is still very popular in the console community.

I'm really, really liking Infinite Warfare, way more than I did Black Ops 3. At least, right now, they haven't ruined the game like Treyarch with all the stupid costumes, clown outfits and horrible camos and character animations post game (like dabbing and Ney Ney). So far the game has retained it's more militaristic feel and grit. The game play is also very solid and the campaign is really, really good.

But it's also nice to see Titanfall 2 jump up from 11 last month to 5 in November, hopefully that black friday sale helped and with positive word of mouth, the game will live on. Free awesome DLC and solid gameplay, it's a really great game. Battlefield on the other hand is by far the best looking game on any platform, to bad it's a bore to play.

@sellingthings: sure, a remarkable campaign, an addictive multiplayer and a real fun zombie mode. IW is being like the continuance of the stuff that made Black Ops 3 great and some new ideas plus a great campaign which BO3 lacked. it simply got tons of content.

@tomclancyhaha: Shooter of the year, no, it's great, better than Battlefield and Titanfall 2, but not Overwatch. Not by a mile. While COD has a great, solid single player game, its multi-player isn't as fun, smooth or inventive as Blizzard's Overwatch. You watch, it will be game of the year everywhere, it already won at the Video Game awards, it's going to sweep.

@mwewerka: you may be right, cuz I haven't yet tried Overwatch but I will, especially after all these awards being given to it. IW's multiplayer keeps getting more and more fun as you play, i'd say just give it more time, try modes like Kill Confirmed, don't stick to TDM.

@mwewerka: COD is laughably worse then both BF1, and Titanfall2. The reviews show this, and the player bases of both games show this.

@SOul_FUNk: Battlefield 1 is, in fact outselling it when considering digital sales. This chart, does not. That's why this chart is a bias'ed laughable crock of shit.

@SOul_FUNk: You really thought Battlefield was going to outsell COD? Come on man, you know all the haters saying they wouldn't buy it, were just lying sacks of **** they want to talk big on the internet and sound cool, like they are progressive for not going mainstream with COD and going with BF. Fact is, they lied and COD, while it may have sold less than last year, is still a juggernaut and still crushes all other shooters, period.

That being said, while I love COD and play it every night, Overwatch is my call for Best Shooter of the Year. The game is so damn good, it's further evidence that Blizzard really does polish the hell out of everything they do.

@mwewerka: Again, i'll repeat, it IS outselling cod when both physical and digital sales are included. By a margin over 3.6 million so far.

@dlaney34: So more time has passed, but I remembered your comment. I knew you were wrong then, I'll even prove you wrong now. While this is the UK sales charts, the US is very similar.

Call of Duty has started of 2017 in first place, while Battlefield has dropped, I repeat, dropped, in sales to 4th. You can keep claiming that digital sales are higher, but we all know better. What sells well in physical copies also sells well in digital. Fact is, Call of Duty, despite all the hate, all the fake hate, is still outselling Battlefield. Regardless of the "dislikes" on YouTube, regardless of the haters on Facebook trashing all the trailers and news clips, they just wanted to bring down the giant, but when the time came to release both, people (most likely including the haters) bought Call of Duty anyway. Sure, sales are down over previous versions, but it's still the best selling shooter of the year, period.

If you haven't bought it, that's your fault, you're missing a great single player campaign and while the MP isn't anything spectacular, it's solid, well-paced and well-made. It's great package, top to bottom.

@mwewerka: Your fanboy response is typical. What's particularly telling is once again, your measuring physical boxed sales. You really ought to get a job with Neilsen ratings, INC - before they expire like physical boxes will w/in 10 years as well. You're honestly not understanding digital distribution whatsoever. You probably think renting videos at a blockbuster is better then streaming netflix based on your continued physical box rants.

COD is made for people who play on the consoles, PC gamers hardly touch it, because it's not a very good game, and never been ported well anyway. Playing a bad game every day, as you said seems to have clouded your ability to differentiate here.

@tomclancyhaha: You seriously have NO idea that there is a difference from physical software sales, and digital software sales, do you? You are correct that COD, has sold MORE physical boxes then Battlefield - but Battlefield has sold an additional 7 million digital titles on the PC alone, where as COD's sales via Steam are under 1 million digital units moved. I don't know why you need ME to look this data up for you when it's all over steam engines and multiple forums. Stop being in stupid denial.
