Top 10 UK Sales Chart: Sea Of Thieves Beats A Way Out To No.1

Out at sea.

Sea of Thieves beats competition from EA's new co-op game A Way Out to top the UK physical games chart this week. The Xbox One and PC exclusive finishes at No.1 in its debut week, ending March 24, according to sales monitor Chart-Track.

In a bumper week for new releases, Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom and Assassin's Creed Rogue: Remastered debut at No.3 at No.4 respectively. The week's other new games are Attack on Titan 2, which manages a No.17 finish, and 3DS's Detective Pikachu at No.23.

Now Playing: Sea Of Thieves Needs More Content

Sea of Thieves is Microsoft's first big console exclusive of the year, and it's off to a good start in the charts. Our full review is coming soon, but until then you can check out our initial Sea of Thieves impressions. Despite Sea of Thieves' high finish, combined sales of all six of this week's new releases are still lower than what Mass Effect Andromeda achieved in the same week last year upon its debut. However, it's worth noting that Microsoft's pirate game is the company's first to be included in its Game Pass scheme at launch for no extra charge, and so fewer people may have bought the game at retail.

Meanwhile in our A Way Out review, we awarded EA's co-op game a 6/10. "By the time the credits rolled, my partner and I didn't really feel like we'd been on much of a journey with Leo and Vincent," we said. "We'd been on a geographical tour, sure--one that was often trite, gimmicky, or cringeworthy--but we didn't feel the pair had learned anything or grown in any meaningful way. I did, however, enjoy the journey I'd been on with my friend sat next to me. We had to look out for each other while escaping prison, work together to solve puzzles, and save each other's life on multiple occasions. Our characters might not have grown closer together, but A Way Out's forced co-op is worth it for the few standout moments it provides."

Finally, Peter Brown's Ni No Kuni 2 review awarded the JRPG an 8/10. "Ni No Kuni 2 is a robust game that offers ample ways to spend your time, and even if they aren't all up to the same level of quality, it's easy to appreciate how they collectively contribute to the bigger picture," he wrote. "It's chock full of excellent battles and surprising moments that make for a far more memorable experience than you initially expect and leaves you impressed by your own accomplishments. If you didn't play the first game, don't let this one pass you by too."

You can read the full top 10 sales chart below, courtesy of UKIE and GfK Chart-Track. Note this table does not include digital sales data, and so should not be considered representative of all UK game sales.

  2. A Way Out

  4. Assassin's Creed Rogue: Remastered
  5. FIFA 18
  6. Burnout Paradise Remastered
  7. Grand Theft Auto V

Ah,the positive about this is MS will support Rare on making future updates and DLCs(and they better be free as the game is lacking content at a price of $60) if the game is financially successfull.

Few months later SoT could be a fantastic game with the right content delivered but right now its a bitter-sweet experience for me.

Wow it beat a near 6 year old game, 2 remasters, and a few others that are nearly a year old. (sarcasm)

That's not a jaded article. They say SoT sold well and then go on to say that Mass Effect sold more than the top six games combined last year. What does Mass Effect have to do with the recent sales chart? It's like they're just trying to diminish the game by saying something like that.

And calling Game Pass a "scheme?" Real objective journalism there. Why not just have PlayStation magazine write the article instead.

I would call this crap out if it happened on a Sony article as well btw. I can't stand biased journalism.

@Vodoo: It should be noted that in the UK and similar locations, "scheme" generally refers to any kind of plan or structure.

Example, there could be a plan from the government to create a universal wage or something. News reports and press briefings would say "the upcoming wages scheme."

@impeople: Gotcha. Here in the US a scheme is more referred to as a scam, or a purpose with an ulterior motive. Like if someone is scheming, they're doing shady stuff.

@Vodoo: they just wrote an entire article on how one of PlayStations most premiere and loved franchises had bad combat. A game where combat was the focal point and a game that spawned multiple iterations.

@RicanV: What article was that? I hope you're not talking about the God of War article because they actually said the combat was great.

Pleased to see Rare receive some measure of success, if only for trying something different. Maybe it'll turn out to be a great game in a years time, who knows?

@nsa_protocol44: Can you be surprised by other humans in No Man’s Sky? Can you defeat enemies using your wits, instead of fighting? In No Man’s Sky do you need to solve riddles, build traps or take risks?

Does it let you freely explore a world, take risks for carrying your loot, be surprised by the environment, take care of you ship as everything else is happening and the essential: react to other humans behavior? Attack or try to make an alliance? Make a plan to the end or betray?

In Sea of Thieves that’s you who lives the game. Not your developer.

That’s why No Man’s Sky worked on PS4, a plataform where players need a developer to guide them on singleplayer. Anything different doesn’t work, just like online games. Just action-adventure exclusives, “play once and never more” games for sheep.

@nsa_protocol44: To be fair, they're asking for 50 Euros (or 30 Euros for the base version) - it's the EU that's asking for the rest...

@nsa_protocol44: Do you know the “Xbox Game Pass” alternative, don’t you? It’s just $9 and if you enjoy the game that let you buy it 20% off on Live. Most players I know use the Game Pass.

These selling numbers are surprises because there was an alternative, provided by MS. It’s not fair to complain about the price.

Impressive and deserved. Sea of Thieves is probably the best new gaming formula in years. Every gamer should have that experience. A disruptive game that will improve every day. Congratulations, Rare.

PS. Does this only take account Xbox disk sales? Definitely impressive. Most players I know are using Xbox Game Pass...
