Top Gun: Maverick Breaks Yet Another Record With Digital Release
Highway to the profitable zone.
Top Gun: Maverick continues to pick up greater momentum after release, as Variety is reporting that the blockbuster film has become the No. 1 best-selling digital sell-through title in the US in its first week of release. The publication notes that the data it's citing come directly from Paramount Home Entertainment.
The digital release includes 110 minutes of bonus content, including behind-the-scenes features--many look at the intense, mandatory training regimen Tom Cruise imposed on the cast. There are also sequences in the bonus content that document how the filmmakers captured the movie's incredible flying sequences.
Paramount hasn't disclosed a dollar-figure amount for sales on Top Gun: Maverick, but a studio representative told Variety that its sales estimates are based on "industry tracking resources, independent analysis, and retailer feedback." The movie will come out in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 1.
Released in June after COVID-related delays, Maverick is 2022's highest-grossing movie worldwide, bringing in $1.37 billion. By July, Top Gun: Maverick had already become the 12th movie in history to gross $600 million in the US. The film has been picking up stellar reviews across the board, including GameSpot. It's officially the highest-grossing movie ever for Tom Cruise and of 2022 so far.
Cruise, who was also a producer, said he did not allow Maverick to debut on a streaming service. "I make movies for the big screen," Cruise said.
