TowerFall sold better on PS4 than PC, Ouya version trails behind

Even with a smaller install base, PS4 has been the game's best-selling platform so far.

Indie hit TowerFall has sold better on PlayStation 4 than on PC or Ouya, the latter of which accounted for about 7,000 sales, reports Eurogamer.

TowerFall is a multiplayer-focused archery game originally released on Ouya last June. It is often cited as being among the Android microconsole's best games. Despite that accolade, it has only sold roughly 5,000 additional units since developer Matt Thorson announced sales figures last July.

In March, the game was released with additional content as TowerFall: Ascension on the PS4 and PC. In total, the three versions have grossed $500,000 in sales, Thorson told Eurogamer, with the PS4 version being the strongest seller of the three.

Despite there being a much smaller install base--the PS4 has sold 7 million units worldwide as of earlier this month, compared with at least tens of millions of computers capable of running TowerFall--Thorson doesn't seem surprised with the way things have gone. "I think it's just a console game, ya know?" he said.

"People have controllers--it's not confusing to get the controllers like it is for PC--and people have it in their living rooms already. I think a lot of people still sit down with their friends when they play their consoles, whereas they don't do that on PC. Even if it's a single-player game."

Thorson also points to Sony's strong promotion of the game as playing a role in its performance on the console. He has previously talked about how proactive the company was in trying to bring TowerFall to the platform.

As for Ouya, Thorson said, "Being the best game on Ouya isn't a huge deal, but it is nice. It still sells on there." Considering the $15 price of the game, Thorson's estimate of 7,000 sales on Ouya would suggest it accounted for just over $100,000 of the game's gross sales.

Julie Uhrman has stated 21% of the games revenue has come from OUYA, if that is correct that is impressive for a console for a niche market out less than a year. A very important issue to note is that this was expensive for an OUYA title. Where many games on the console are just a couple of bucks, Towerfall is $15. They should say how many OUYA owners downloaded the free trial, which is a core basis of the OUYA console (or was at launch).

With this it must be remembered that the PS4 sold by the bucket load with many people wanting to 'flesh out' their library. They knew that Towerfall was a good game due to media attention (a bright spot in the sea of negativity for OUYA). It sold less well on PC as the PC has more games of this type than PS4, especially on STEAM. It could be argued that the OUYA was a success for this title and proved a great launchpad for the developer but SSSHHH! We can't have positivity about OUYA!

Important things to consider. Ok, it will have sold the most on PS4 due to it being a new, highly selling console. People knew Towerfall to be a good game due to the media attention it could on OUYA (with all the negative it was a bright spot). Then there is the fact that there are a very finite number of games on PS4 and people want to bulk out their library. Then there is the fact that there are many games of this type on PC, so the PC version is bound not to sell as well. Finally, it was very expensive for an OUYA game, the fundamental point is there is a free version on OUYA. How many people downloaded that? The positive way to look at this would be the dev got his recognition on OUYA and it was a great launching platform, but SSSSHH! We can't have positivity about OUYA!!!

PC gaming is dead. The only reason it can't be declared so because everyone has PC's but only around 20K worldwide use pC's for gaming.

asking why?

a platform like PC is flooded with indie game releases daily. PS4 - not so much.small selection of games. so of course some games will do better on a console that isn't saturated with games. its simple economics. this just just shows you that PS4 owners are still starving for more games, and will buy just about anything right now.. PC gamers are not exactly in the same boat.

not every "good" game warrants immediate purchase on PC right now, because there are so many to choose from, and only so much time to play them all. PC gamers are spoiled like that. and they've adopted the model of waiting for deep steam sales.

Considering that the dev has pulled the free demo of Towerfall from Ouya and did not bother to support the PS3 pad for Ouya, I would say that the dev couldn't really care less about the Ouya system. I am not surprised though, considering what a mess the Ouya is in right now.

Why is it selling so well on the PS4? should the article actually be about.

It´s simply cause there isn´t anything worthwhile to play there, and while the Xbone and PC got Titanfall, this is the best Sony has been able to muster in that period.

There's like 10 similar games to this on steam (with online co-op) so why would PC gamers care?. Also no game dev is as childishly stupid as Thorson is quoted as being in this article. The article is clearly paid for to promote the game for PS4 fanboys and rile up PC gamers who seem to care about pc vs console warz!!. With no online co-op it is useless on PC. I'll just enjoy Starbound thanks

So don't realise it on steam, I'm sure you will miss the millions but like you said it's a console game...ya know?

If you're interested at all in gaming you would support the PC. The only truly open platform.

As you give control to the corporations you will begin to see your rights slowly being taken away. Power will be concentrated in only a few corporations. Corporations do not give a damn about you. They are simply a cancer. Their only goal is to spread, take control, and destroy competition, in the name of more profits.

If you love gaming, you would be smart enough to realize that open platforms = freedom from the corporations.

Support Gamers !! Support OPEN platforms !!

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree even if you overstate it a bit.
Gamers need to support open platforms because it's the only way to ensure that we can get the best games moving forward without paying too much. The PC as well as Android are the only platforms we've got in that respect, but Microsoft is rapidly closing Windows, so we need to move to Linux as well, preferably.

What's basically happening in the IT and games industry is these big corporations are being allowed to control the infrastructure on which we run programs and play with friends. Imagine of roads were owned by corporations and only one corporation had the rights to repair and maintain the road, but the corporation sometimes didn't care because the road didn't have enough traffic or didn't get enough money.

You need only look to the internet service providers to see what happens, then.

@Kunasha @GSGuy321This is why SteamOS matters, but some people get so violently ill at the thought of it - I swear weaning PC gamers off of Windows might do them a lick of good. The deep distrust of a free operating system optimized for gaming is unnatural IMO. Nobody is making you use it, but surely you can appreciate what its goals are, no?

No mention that it prob got overwhelmed with the amount of constant new releases on Steam (many of them crap due to Greenlight). Whereas PS4 has a limited amount of releases at the moment.

Another good deal for the Indiestation 4

Indies have no problem to sell games on the Portstation 4 since this console don't have any good exclusives

Of course it didn't sell on PC well, its a 4-way "couch" PVP game, it has no online component. Why the f*ck would you buy this on PC? Is anyone surprised by this?

Is this yet another GS article trying to incite a platform war? Judging by the comments it's working; stop arguing you guillable lot.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That is another reason why Ouya gamers did not bother with it, plus the fact that Ouya's have severe problems supporting just one of it's own POS controllers, yet alone four. The PS4 version also has not got online play,, either.

Although I want split screen to be supported, it should always be as a bonus. ONLINE is the staple, and hipster devs like this who refuse online play to force split screen onto an indifferent public won't be around for much longer.

Towerfall really wasn't that great. I played it with a number of chums that came around, from PC and console backgrounds and all it got was a collective "meh".

Most people don't even give a flying **** about this game, much less what system sold more copies of it. This is yet again another article by Gamespot to tear gamers who choose one platform over another apart on the same old thing. Unless you're going to make a profit off of this game, what difference does it make?

Just gave it to you. Other than drawing you a picture while fastening your Velcro sneakers for you, I'm afraid I can't help you past that.

That's the sad thing about dealing will the close minded. The truth could be penetrating your skull like angry prison sex and you'd just lay there denying it's even happening.

@Gravity_SlaveYou gave nothing but some vague assertions about when PC gaming started to fail with nothing cited or given to prove your claim. You obviously don't know what facts or evidence are.

It takes a really great deal of discipline to be able to be confronted with situations such as when people all over the place talk about how they've migrated back to PCs, and to see the continued growth of Steam, Origin, GOG.com and the many, many other smaller websites offering digital distribution of games, and to see documents from organizations like the ESA showing that PC gaming is still well alive and growing and then to pretend that all of that simply doesn't exist. That kind of discipline comes from being a brainwashed prol trained towards the knee-jerk, reactionary defense of your master (in your case Microsoft, apparently), and the spewing of vitriolic bile at anyone who challenges you in any way. And just for your information, alluding to prison rape as your analogy for anything isn't clever or witty, it means you have some severe emotional problems.

PC gaming will never die. The PC itself will eventually be phased out, this is true. But your precious XBox is not the thing that will replace it. PCs will evolve into Smart Phones, Smart TVs, wearable computers, or some other form of all-in-one media device that will become the popular form for gaming while your dedicated, closed-platform consoles languish and die. Your consoles are a fad. Until then the PC is the best platform for games and not just for all the pragmatic reasons about modability and connectivity and freedom, but because of the principle reason that the PC is there to elevate GAMES. It is not like the abject perversions that the consoles are, which are about using games to glorify the hardware and their makers by holding games hostage as exclusives and by creating jingoist fanaticism for the Xbox and PS (which are identical except for the little logo that brands them, whose honor people get into all sorts of irrational fights over) and for Nintendo, who if you even suggest are doing something wrong you'll get a whole sycophant nation leaping down your throat.

I'm not fooled by anything. But you're close. It was actually around 2002-03 that the PC industry got it's first glimpse of its eventual demise. That was when the PS2 started to go full swing into online multiplayer. A big hit then was Socom 2 and FFXI. Consoles really started to take that leap into the PC's territory.

No longer are console these isolated boxes with an "as-is" stamp on them. They even last longer than the PC archetecture due to it's more stable and standard hardware that makes it easier on developers.

All the signs and red flags are there but PC gamers still hold on to the hope that their platform isn't dying. If having to sign a petition just to play GTAV, Valve making a console and ppl having to donate money so developers can get a game off the ground isn't proof enough..,

moron article, writers are really dumb and bored of their jobs or they are hoping we are dumb and dont figure out the bigger picture eg ps4 haveing ef all games to choose from ofcourse this is going to get snapped up for 20 dollars" im so so so tired of having to sift through articles for the truth in all of them, atleast with forums like this we can just scroll down and someone has explained the truth about each article.

Yeah, Sony's relationship with indie games is getting stronger all the time. I prefer playing as many indie titles as I can on my vita, over my PC. Most of them seem like they were made for on the go gaming.

I'm a PC gamer and love games like this. It's a shame the developer did, well, nothing to promote the game on the platform.

I'd gladly plop down the $15 now if not for that fact. Given the heavy emphasis on multiplayer and the lack of sales, I can't justify risking idle time hoping someone else might join the game.

It's not tower defence, it's more like a retro All-Stars Battle Royale or Super Smash Bros. The actual reason is that PC has a lot of variety, especially when it comes to indie games.

No kidding. I mean on the PC, we have thousands of games to choose from. On the PS4, we have tens of games to choose from. So when a new one comes out, it obviously is going to sell better because people are bored with the few games they have.
