Trans Employees At Netflix To Stage Walkout To Protest Chappelle Special - Report

The walkout is reportedly set for October 20.

Trans employees at Netflix will stage a walkout next week to protest comedian Dave Chapelle's new Netflix special, The Closer, the Los Angeles Times reports. The walkout is reportedly set to take place on October 20.

The walkout will include members of Netflix's employee resource group, Trans*, which includes the streaming giant's trans employees and their allies. The planned walkout follows the suspension of three Netflix employees, who were initially suspended for crashing a director-level meeting to which they were not invited. All three were reinstated following social media outcry.

The walkout will occur a day after Netflix holds a virtual event meant to discuss the impact of Chappelle's special on the trans community, hosted by trans activist Alok Vaid-Menon.

In the special, Chapelle talks about criticism that came from the LGBTQ community. Chapelle's special includes a number of derogatory comments about the trans community, and Chapelle says he supports Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling who has come under fire for repeatedly voicing anti-trans sentiments.

Netflix employees reportedly raised concerns about the special before it debuted, Bloomberg reports, but Netflix executives felt it didn't cross the line.

"Several of you have ... asked where we draw the line on hate. We don’t allow titles on Netflix that are designed to incite hate or violence, and we don’t believe The Closer crosses that line," said Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos wrote in an internal memo. It's worth noting that Netflix can and has removed content at the request of foreign governments.

Sarandos also said that the company would not take down the special, for which Bloomberg says it spent $24.1 million--more than the entire nine-episode run of the ultra-popular Squid Game. Bloomberg also notes that Chappelle's previous special, Sticks & Stones, under-performed for the $23.6 million the streamer spent on it.

"Promoting [trans-exclusionary radical feminist] ideology...directly harms trans people, it is not some neutral act," said Terra Field, one of the suspended and now reinstated employees in a tweet last week. "This all gets brushed off as offense though--because if we're just 'too sensitive' then it's easy to ignore us."

I said this on a comment to an IGN article saying "The new John Wick series is losing goodwill by casting Mel Gibson" Not even sure why I go to IGN or here anymore. I guess just to see how bad it's gotten. Anyway, I just thought it's is extremely sad to see the human race wither to this pathetic state. We used to take down Mammoths with our bare hands, now we can't handle specific sounds people make with their mouths....

I saw the special and quite a few groups were "targeted". Comedy generally is going to be at someone or something's expense.

"Chapelle's special includes a number of derogatory comments about the trans community"

Dave's specials always include derogatory comments about EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. But only one group has an issue. Sounds like the issue isn't with the comedian and their delusion of worldly victimhood. Kinda hard to do when attacking a black man while claiming such victimhood.

What, all 3 employees? In a company of how much, 12,000?

The special was fucking great by the way, and anyone complaining about it obviously didn't watch it, and instead is just seeing snippets taken out of context. The very core of Chapelle's Closer is about Daphne Dorman (amazing sounding person). To say his content is about harming trans people is just plain wrong. His very show is a tribute to his trans friend.

After seeing what Chapelle said, I have to say the REAL focus of all this should be haters, not comedians who have always said stuff like this.

If you're worried about words leading to violence, you're looking in the wrong place. In my experience, someone willing to hurt or kill a trans person is also willing to hurt black, fat, rich, or deformed people, or whatever flaw they deem warrants violence. That's because these kinds of people will ALWAYS look for reasons to cause violence. We should be focusing on these concerns, the reason WHY someone might be disturbed or frustrated enough to commit violence, not on stifling any comment judged offensive. Frankly, it's a futile endeavour. People will always find a way to say what they want to say, and that's a free will thing, not a free speech thing, and any attempt to control that will only piss them off. Instead of purging the collective consciousness of the bad vibes those evil words conjure, you just get people asking "What did he say? Wait, that's all? Those bullies!" and now you're the villain.

In contrast, nobody really wants to be around someone they know is capable of violence (nobody who is healthy and well adjusted, anyway).

I've watched the special and it's HILARIOUS.

But as always, the sensitive snow flakes can't handle a joke. So we find ourselves discussing this crap again.

Here we go:

Paulo Freire once said “The oppressed, instead of striving for liberation, tend themselves to become oppressors.”

This walkout isn't about justice or equality.

It's about strong-arming everyone, not into accepting people for who they are, but to shove behavior down their throats. It's about criminalizing thought and speech. It's about curbing opinion, facts, jokes in lieu of some twisted notion of a safe space.

It's about shutting down anyone and everyone who doesn't conform to their standards of how to think, how to feel and what to do and what to say.

This group goes as far a showing up to people's houses, or worse, attempting to take away people's livelihoods.

This is why this won't work. The non-LGBTQ+ people who sympathized with the movement are starting to get fed up with it. Myself included.

Also, "Impossible burger" (Watch the special and you'll know what this means)

Same thing happened with the Body Positive movement... Straight men were somehow the enemy.

With very few exceptions, straight men don't write, read, buy or promote fashion or anything women related. We just don't understand what makes a woman tic.

Hot bodies or as fat women would call it, "Impossible standards of beauty", were promoted by fashion publications in which men had absolutely nothing to do with, unless you consider Ana Wintour a man.

Yet, somehow, it's men's fault that fat women can't put down that cheesecake and hate their own fat a$$.

Men will f*ck anything. That's why you can find fat, ugly sluts, but never fat, ugly studs.

Just as you think some people aren't attractive, you can't blame others for not finding you attractive.

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO GO THROUGH LIFE WITHOUT FEELING OR BEING OFFENDED. THEM'S NOT THE RULES.

Grow the hell up, stop blaming others for your own self doubt, self image problems, self esteem and any other self you can think about and take some responsibility for your own life.

I heard three employees were suspended. Next thing you know, those same three people are doing a walk out? When they’re suspended? Okay then, I guess.

@vaativids: They were suspended for barging in on an executive meeting, not for tweeting about the show. And one of them was reinstated since then which means they're doing the walk-out regardless.

This is all information readily available on the internet. No need for hearsay.

@Barighm: I know what they were suspended for and you’re correct, for barging in on an executive meeting. So one “person” is walking out, is basically what they’re saying. And what I’m saying is that we don’t need to hear about tweets because what people think about things or how they react to factual information isn’t news and shouldn’t be anybody’s concern. Especially not when a trans woman was pushed by her own community to, sadly, commit suicide, in which the media has sidestepped.

Last time I checked, Freedom of Speech was still a thing. Dave Chapelle had a beautiful and emotional story of a friendship with a trans-woman. People are just looking to throw a fit.

I would like to know why the focus is on Dave Chapelle and why the media is sidestepping the trans community making their own people commit suicide, which is obviously the real tragedy of this entire story. Nobody cares what happens on Twitter. A real tragedy occurred and apparently we should just ignore it?

@Ippongi_Ryuta: Remember when you were little and you pretended to be somebody else. I’m sure you really took that role seriously. Actors do it all the time. We identify with character roles to the point where it gets serious. You know what it’s like over there. A total cosmetic fantasy land. Race Wars, Gender Wars and Trans vs Pans. Who doesn’t love a good fight? Just sit back and enjoy it.

I find it oppressive, how oppressed these delusional people all. Seriously, they are so backwards in their minds that they cant tell if they are a man, woman, or dolphin. I personally knew when I was born, that I was and will always be a Dolphin. Why does everyone have to be so damn sensitive. Millions of my brethren are murdered off the coast of Japan yearly, but do you hear us Dolphins "Walking out?" No, we swim while we heckle like Jackels of the Sea. Da-nile isnt just a river in Egypt! Here is the point, Hire more dolphins, we are much better employees and dont ever question what bathroom to use.

What virtually all the negative reviews of ‘The Closer’ conveniently ignore is the centerpiece of the entire special — the closing bit on Daphne Dorman, Chappelle’s transgender friend. The final 10 minutes, for better or worse, is meant to bury Chappelle’s hatchet with the transgender community. It is essentially his ”olive branch” moment after making fun of everyone from Asians (I am Asian and wasn’t remotely offended) to Jews to Blacks to Whites to the LGBTQ community. To make zero mention of his bit on Daphne Dorman is not only unfair to Chappelle, but also exposes the uninformed and biased agenda of those seeking to shut him down, which I can say right off the bat will fail….MISERABLY.

@longshank:Hit the nail on the head. It's baffling to me how people can just ignore that entire segment when it was a very large portion of the show.

Plus, come on. He's a comedian. Take things in stride. I'm white and he made fun of whites for YEARS. Like you said, not offended at all.

@RyoHakubi: They ignore it because the segment is about how a trans person was bullied into suicide by the VERY PEOPLE who are bullying Chappelle now. Of course they're going to ignore it since it proves Chappelle right about everything - THEY are the real danger.

Stop making concessions for these groups and the insane Twitter mobs. They screw up at work, they should be held accountable just like anyone would.

You know damn straight that if someone barged into a meeting saying, "what's with all these offensive trans shows," that person would be fired without a second thought. But because they're trans, and Twatter bitches for them, it's ok?

But people love to wine on Twitter and the nutbag mob gets all rallied up.

Comedians are funny because they say shocking stuff that's funny. Take a joke! Look at how many good comedians there are now... Not many. Because they're all to scared Twatter is gonna go after them. It's a f'n joke. Cancel Twitter. It causes more problems than it's worth.

It doesnt bother me they ignored his jokes. Like we all say, dont like a game, dont play it. Cool. But it sure is nice to know they ignored his sentiment on his trans friend they trashed to suicide 6 days after she opened one of his acts and had the best night of her life. Over daring to stand up for him. On twitter. 🤦 That community doesnt respect anything. Circle the building all you like though. 🤷

Think about all the jokes he makes at expense of white folks in this same standup (not to mention previous routines). This is what "equality" is - you can't demand both equality and protection since this is obviously antithetical to what "treating everyone the same" means.

I watched his special and it was really good, I felt his LGBTQ material was actually inclusive and in no way out to offend. Though satire is something that not everyone gets or understands, as including someone in your 'group' also means you include them warts and all, including getting a ribbing as well as learning to laugh at it all. I know my in-laws had to learn real quickly to learn to take a joke once they met my family.

I do know that Chapelle enjoys the 'offense', : that Karens, that 'mediocre white males syndrome' people , that Asians and more all take because of how easy they are to become offended yet cannot empathize with another's plight nor that we are all in this together on this blue ball hurling through space. I really felt that his last special was overly inclusive and well as trying to educate the world on one another plights.

I have read some news reviews of snip its , of his special, that were greatly taken out of context of the whole.

Pathetic. If all minority groups, heck ANY groups of people reacted this way, comedy would be banned in all form.

I actually work with a trans person and she is very nice, calm and nowhere near this sort of activist type. These types just ruin it for the reasonable ones.

Dont let the door hit ya on the way out.

This only proves his points in his special right. This group is arguing about apples when he is trying to get you to talk about oranges.

You dont listen, you only shout and yell over everyone. Calm down, sit down, and try to come to a middle ground with the rest of us. That was all he was asking in his special. Did he throw some funny puns in the middle of it? Sure, that is what he is paid to do.

But, he also made the point about how crazy this has gotten. And his point has been clearly proven right.
