Trio added to Wii's VC

Latest games for Wii's Virtual Console include Tennis, Space Harrier II, Military Madness; all three now available for download.

While much of the working public hates Mondays, retro gaming fans who happen to also be Wii owners can't wait for Monday morning. That's because Nintendo uses Mondays to release the latest offerings for its Virtual Console.

Today, three new games spanning three distinct genres were made available for download. Leading the pack is Tennis, which originally appeared on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The game simulates its namesake, can support two players, and costs 500 Wii points ($5).

Space Harrier II lands on the VC for 800 Wii points ($8). Originally appearing on the Sega Genesis, the game features the titular hero doing battle against waves of enemies in a 3D landscape.

Military Madness has been ported to the Wii from the TurboGrafx-16 console and costs 600 Wii points ($6) to download. The turn-based strategy game is set on the moon during a future war and features 16 stages.

One of the titles confirmed for release next week is the Sega Genesis' Toe Jam & Earl. For more on the Virtual Console, check out Nintendo's Virtual Console Web page.

Space Harrier II, yes; Military Madness and Tennis, no. This'll bring my VC purchase count to like 10 games or something, and they haven't even started releasing the really good games yet.

I believe this brings the TOTAL Virtual Console game count to 29, which is not bad going considering the fact we are less than 2 weeks after the UK launch... Ive got a close eye on the N64 releases, I already have a lot of N64 cartridges in my collection (100+) and im still collecting so im gonna need some srious convincing if im gonna actually buy a Wii and get full use of the Virtual Console... I also have a lot of Sega Megadrive games so unless I managed to sell off my collection and bought them all back on VC a Wii really isnt for me... is it ? ? ?

Thus far, I haven't bought a game on the VC. I'll probably fork over some money once they include- River City Ransom (NES) Super Mario RPG (SNES) Final Fantasy 2 or 3(4 or 6 in Japan) (SNES) Earthbound (SNES) Earthbound Zero (NES) Any Phantasy Star (GEN) Zombies Ate My Neighbors (SNES, GEN) Sin & Punishment (N64) Super Metroid (SNES) Link to the Past (SNES) Maniac Mansion (NES) Well that's my wishlist. In my eyes, these games have stood the tests of time and are still fun to play now. Adding Tennis and other simple games isn't a bad thing, it probably takes them very little time and effort to port them over. There's no doubt in my mind that we'll see more awesome VC games; you just have to remember that the Wii just came out last month, Nintendo is also working on new games, and if we don't stop complaining, Reggie's going to come to our houses melt our faces off.

Ohh joy more game i already have and could play long before the WII came. When are they going to do super rare games like mario excite bike and earthbound zero? I got those too but at least they would be worth the outragious price. and no n64 games nintendo it sucked. Nintendo, sega and hudson is also pulling you peoples chains and could have had just about every game they made on the service on day one if they wished you are only paying for emulation application that is universal to the consoles and a ROM data.

OK time to be really nerdy here. All those who say military madness is advance wars grandpa you are mistaken. Military Madness is a great game I used to play the hell out of it on my turbo, but the point is advance wars stems from nintendo wars which is older then military madness by a year or two I believe.

I just bought Military Madness, and it rocks. This game reminds me of advanced wars alot, and it is fun. In fact I enjoyed this alot more than advanced wars. I think They are putting up games for everyone. I am just worried about running out of room on my Wii.

Hey, I like the multiplayer on tennis and ice hockey and $5 is fine ...Look around, a latte will run you just as much. And no one is forcing you to pay for these. I mean, if tennis or ice hockey was $2-$3, were you gonna buy it anyways? From the sounds of it, you guys don't like those games so it doesn't matter how much it costs, you wouldn't get them. All you people do is come and complain as if the VC was the only reason you bought the Wii.

Space Harrier 2 I can see. Military Madness I can see. However, how many people are going to buy Tennis? Even by NES standards, there are better games for it. I'll pass.

I just checked out the VC web page, and it lists Dungeon Explorer(TG16), Toe Jam and Earl(SG) and Urban Champion(NES) which aren`t currently(Dec 19/06) available. I assume that these are the Xmas day titles for VC. I was kinda hoping for Super mario 1 or 2, maybe Duckhunt. One of the big ones anyway. Oh well...

It's clear that some of you may never have heard of Military Madness, but man do you have to give this game a shot. Think of Advance Wars...if you like that game you will LOVE this one. I can't speak highly enough about it. Considering the game goes for $50 on Ebay for the TG-16, I think $6 is CHEAP! Quit reading and go get this game immediately.

Chainblast While I agree with what you're saying, who is it to say what is a lower-end spectrum game compared to a higher end? While most of us know that Legend of Zelda is a stellar game worth the price because it is a higher end game, whats not to say that Ice Hockey is a stellar game to someone else? Again, I agree that the prices are too high on VC and there should be a fluctuating price model, it's just a matter of developing one that works and makes sense - and that's the hard part. Doubtful that things would change either - VC seems to be doing very well. And for all of those waiting for RPGs and some of the bigger names... Nintendo will release them... but to prolong the life of the Wii over the next 4 or 5 years, Nintendo will only release a few of these big titles over the course of the next year, for instance. Makes sense over the long run, just a test of patience to the gamers!

@josephmadde2005 I do have to say I wish Nintendo would have thrown us a few more choice cut rather then the mess they have put on the VC. I understand spacing and waiting for big sequels but man this is getting old. I agree, but 'getting old'? Hardly, the Wii has only been out a month... And they're releasing games with a frequency that is hither-to unmatched. I admit that most are total duffers though...

It depends on the game. Assuming that Mario 3 will be $5, getting a cart off of ebay for that game will cost you much more than that when you factor in shipping fees. Or you could press a couple buttons and have a perfect version of it on the Wii. I guess it depends on how you look at owning virtual and physical items. But I will agree with you that 95% of the time VC is a rip-off. Games like Legend of Zelda, Mario 64 and the selection of TG16 games I think are priced okay, but it's the Genesis, SNES and the whole load of crap like Ice Hockey and Tennis that are priced too high. The VC needs to have price brackets, and not a standard price per console, which in NA it seems to have. NES games need to run $2-5, SNES $5-8, Genesis $5-8, TG16 $4-6 and N64 $7-10, with games like Tennis being at the low end of the bracket and Zelda being at the high end. Prices need to be determined based on what you're getting.

Aside from the illegal means (i.e. emulation), I think the VC is a rip off compared to what you can get from actually owning the cartridge (see ebay).

The TurboGrafx-16 was an awesome system at the time its great to see those titles on the wii. I still have my panasonic 3DO. It had some great titles crash&burn and roadrash, total eclipse were great at the time. I like the virtual console games, but I wish they would try to give us at least one popular title each week. also you can't just pay 6.00 for a game when you pay 10.00 for 1000 points. if you buy a 800 or 600 point game you still don't have enough for another title.

Military Madness is an absolute gem. I actually had a TG16 back in the day, and it was one of the best games for it. I recommend it to anyone who likes a good strategy game. It's good that the TG16 library can get some exposure on the Wii, there is a lot of good games for the system that many people never even heard of, much less got a chance to play.

Now I Just got a Wii and I don't think any as of yet VC Games interest me but I'm sure that will change eventually. What I can't really understand is why anyone would buy a Tennis game for the VC when the System comes with a Tennis Game in the Box on Wii Sports. Maybe it's for the real Hardcore fans but not me.

The Wii has only been out a month and already loads of people are moaning about a lack of good VC releases. Do you really want every game right now and then have nothing to look forward to over the next 3 years or so? Thought not. Its not so bad right now anyway in my opinion, but don't you think some of the bigger releases might be kept aside for the next gen counterparts? Metroid Prime 3 could see any game from the Metroid series released alongside it in the VC, same with Super Mario Galaxy, Fire Emblem, Final Fantasy. Personally I'm hoping for a whole deluge of SNES RPGs sooner or later, but I'm happy to wait.

All games I care little for, though Military Madness is of mild interest. However, I will not be truly satisfied until Ufouria, Seiken Densetsu 3, Alien Soldier, Sin & Punishment, and the entire Sega Master System line-up are added to the VC line-up...IN North America. It is doubtful this will ever happen though, seeing how Nintendo and Sega are perfectly content with tossing us their leftovers and expecting us to pay for them. After all, Nintendo's the same company that refuses to bring Mother 3 to North America purely out of spite, so why should they do anything that might be even remotely pleasing to the fans? And Sega, you can take your infatuation with Columns, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, Flicky, and Sonic the Hedgehog and shove it. Gunstar Heroes is nice though. REALLY nice. Please try staying on that track.
