Twitter Hates James Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel Movie Trailer

Maybe the big eyes were a bad choice.

James Cameron has been been trying to get an adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita manga made since as far back as 2000. At one point, he even said he intended to direct it. Fast forward to current day and the movie finally exists, with Cameron as a producer and Robert Rodriguez directing.

The first trailer for Alita: Battle Angel has arrived, and the reaction it's receiving surely can't be what everyone involved was hoping for. Rosa Salazar portrays the titular Alita, a cyborg warrior. While, for the most part, the trailer seems to be a decent adaptation of the source material, there is one major thing that doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie.

Now Playing: Alita: Battle Angel - Official Trailer

In the movie, Alita is portrayed as having giant eyes in a normal-sized head. While big eyes are a trademark of many manga and anime classics, it looks downright strange in a live-action film populated with live-action human beings. The eyes and the digital work done to the character's face make her look animated.

It took almost no time for many to jump to Twitter, comparing the trailer to everything from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to cult classic ET: The Extra-Terrestrial rip-off Mac and Me to the baby in Twilight: New Moon - Part 2. The movie "attempts to give its heroine IRL anime eyes and it's the kookiest looking thing," one user says.

It's just a little too difficult to look past those giant eyes in the first trailer, which is a shame. A Robert Rodriguez movie that boasts a cast including Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly, and Ed Skrein, just to name a few, should be pretty amazing.

Not all hope is lost, though. This is just the movie's first trailer. Alita: Battle Angel doesn't hit theaters until July 20, leaving plenty of time to change public perception. In the meantime, take a look at more of our favorite tweets about the trailer below.

People think putting CGI people next to real people works, and it doesn't (Rogue One). It never will. Adding in the jumbo eyes just makes it 10 times worse. This trailer looked terrible. There's just no way I could sit through the movie and not be distracted the whole time and wondering why they made such a stupid decision.

Like, if it was ALL CGI, then it'd be fine! But CGI people and real people will never look right.

@Brettsky128: That was the only slight against Rouge One, the general (?) looked so fake, yet princess Skywalker looked fantastic as a CGI creation.

I don't get why they went with the big eyes here, it just looks so creepy and out of place in an otherwise good looking trailer.

@Texus009: NO, i watch anime cus it's anime, i watch a live action film cus it's a live action film......

I play a videogame cus it's a game, i watch movies etc cus it's a movie etc......I don't necessarily wanna mix the 2.....

that said i've seen a couple decent game adaptations, Mortal, Kombat, Tomb Raider 1, Resident Evil 1 & the 2 Silent Hill movies, I even kinda liked Wing Commander [cus i didn't play the games that much]

i've yet to see a decent anime adaptation.....when the best I've seen is Gundam G Savior and that just looks like amateur hour and it's not as grand as Gundam usually is....take Char's Counterattack, it was more grand in scope than G Savior so yeah.....i have a overt negative opinion on things....

i've seen more games based on movies succeed than i have the other way around....

The Warriors, Star Wars SOTE, Dark Forces [Jedi Knight, Jedi Knight 2, Jedi Academy], KOTOR, KOTOR2, Battlefront 2 [2005], rogue Squadron, Ep1 Pod racer....

then you have inspired by movies....

Fallout [a boy and his dog, mad max, omega man/i am legend and others, definitely some lovecraftian themes in Bethesda's F3 & F4]

Elder Scrolls [Conan and LOTR....i mean based on conan comics and LOTR books]

Mass Effect [Star Trek, BSG, Babylon 5]

and that's just a few.....

but i stand by what i said, I'm attracted to Anime cus I enjoy animation and that specific type of animation as well as most types, and I watch movies and TV etc cus I enjoy those things too.....i do not go into a movie, TV or whatever hoping it's like some anime....

maybe if they made a movie based on an anime like say Samurai Champloo or Ghost in The Shell or something that was more of a continuation of the story....so GITS set after SAC series and Samurai set after the events of the series would be more interesting than trying to adapt the actual GITS movie and show and SC series......

you'd have to recap the story a little but if the movie was good it could stand on it's own but Hollywood is too stubborn to do anything really good.....eww you can't have an Asian as the lead, can't do an all Asian cast...why?? we get movies where it's all black or all Mexican and nobody says anything yet we can't have a properly done movie based on some anime that respects the source??? i say frack that.....

let's not forget, the 90's and early 2000's were an era of film where we saw many many kung fu movies succeed all of which starred Asian actors......you can do these things justice, it's just Hollywood refuses to do it.....

House Of Daggers, Unleashed, Hero, Kung Fu Hustle, Beat Takeshi's Zatoichi, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and many many more....honorable mention, Kung Pow...

@MJ12-Conspiracy: They just need to take out the CGI eyes lmao please. I paused at different points in the trailer and its just creepy as hell. Really bizzare when all the other cyborgs etc have normal eyes.

@gamingdevil800: my point is quit trying to turn anime into film, if i wanted an anime I'd watch it and I am a fan of anime.....

GITS was another, the reason I skipped that was it's a live action adaptation of my fave anime not to mention Major was American in the movie, gee couldn't even get the girl from Pacific Rim?? I've also seen the trailers and really looked at the action, it just came off as a recreation of all the best scenes so i was like frack the political side, I'm not interested cus it's redundant

i've seen enough live action based on anime movies that I'm like frack this, KITE sucked and they shied away from a few scenes and aspects of the anime, I saw a little of that Death note also not all that interesting, I saw Mobile Suit Gundam G Savior [a live action film] not nearly as grand, barely see any Gundam action and what little you see is CGI and out of focus or otherwise obscured and the acting was bad......

Gundam like Star Trek is best as a long series show, where the story develops slowly, not as a all in one shot movie with no payoff.....

just like game adaptations i;m not interested.......

@MJ12-Conspiracy: I'd say a lot of it is down to the directors/studio exec's not understanding the source material. Remember all them crap comic book movies before marvel figured out how to make them?

After watching the trailer a few times, I've gotten used to the eyes. Still odd that she's the only character affected by them trying to keep it as accurate to the manga series, but whatever.

Seems unnecessarily stubborn to let one creative decision affect your entire movie like this.

Eyes on a character are said to never grow so when young they look bigger on kids because they are small and by time they are adults the eyes will appear smaller.

When the trailer opens up I thought this was going to be a cool animation film like one of the final fantasy films, that try for a tone that isn't straight up for little kids but then you see the real people then it just looks odd where your see the cgi and the eyes are part of the reason your seeing it so clearly.

I don't think it looks that bad, to be honest. Sure, it looks strange, but I think people are kinda' exaggerating how bad it looks.

Oh god, the eyes...

I liked the anime, but... ignoring the eyes a moment, considering James Cameron is attached to this? I'll pass.

The big eyed cyberdoll is an interesting concept but it seems awfully executed here. Besides the poor pre-production CGI, those eyes look as crappy as in any average cheap meme or thumbnail. It doesn't even look like they tried some practical effects first; at least Ghost in the Shell got that right.

@goozmania: I haven't watched the anime, but first thing that came to mind after seeing those eyes is that she's a robot and that's probably the reason they made it like that in the movie.

@Henry518: Because there isn't really an anime, the series had one attempt and it failed to capture the manga remotely it's not a matter of anything other then the series is to unique and complex to do LIVE ACTION.

@Zignoff: Well that's the thing, the trick into liking these movies is to have never seen the source. Books and comics/manga are always better because they are a much better way to engage the story, drama and character development. So yeah, it may have failed to capture the manga's quality, but as far as the trailer shows, it still has good quality.
