Twitter Hates James Cameron's Alita: Battle Angel Movie Trailer

Maybe the big eyes were a bad choice.

James Cameron has been been trying to get an adaptation of the Battle Angel Alita manga made since as far back as 2000. At one point, he even said he intended to direct it. Fast forward to current day and the movie finally exists, with Cameron as a producer and Robert Rodriguez directing.

The first trailer for Alita: Battle Angel has arrived, and the reaction it's receiving surely can't be what everyone involved was hoping for. Rosa Salazar portrays the titular Alita, a cyborg warrior. While, for the most part, the trailer seems to be a decent adaptation of the source material, there is one major thing that doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie.

Now Playing: Alita: Battle Angel - Official Trailer

In the movie, Alita is portrayed as having giant eyes in a normal-sized head. While big eyes are a trademark of many manga and anime classics, it looks downright strange in a live-action film populated with live-action human beings. The eyes and the digital work done to the character's face make her look animated.

It took almost no time for many to jump to Twitter, comparing the trailer to everything from Who Framed Roger Rabbit? to cult classic ET: The Extra-Terrestrial rip-off Mac and Me to the baby in Twilight: New Moon - Part 2. The movie "attempts to give its heroine IRL anime eyes and it's the kookiest looking thing," one user says.

It's just a little too difficult to look past those giant eyes in the first trailer, which is a shame. A Robert Rodriguez movie that boasts a cast including Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali, Jennifer Connelly, and Ed Skrein, just to name a few, should be pretty amazing.

Not all hope is lost, though. This is just the movie's first trailer. Alita: Battle Angel doesn't hit theaters until July 20, leaving plenty of time to change public perception. In the meantime, take a look at more of our favorite tweets about the trailer below.

Something outside of our generic action movie views? Oh no we must label it as weird or dumb before it comes out!

To me, it's an interesting artistic choice. "How can we make our anime movie standout? What new things can we try?" Well, at least they're trying something new. Not sure it's a GOOD choice and it is definitely creepy, but I give him props for trying something fresh. The story looks like it could be ok too.

Ugh Twitter...

Not sure if the movie will be good but I'll give it a chance. Gunnm/Alita is one of the top 5 manga, imo.

I've seen things progress towards the Uncanny Valley from animation, but I've never seen something progress backwards to the Uncanny Valley from live-action; it usually just comes off as "they used to much CGI". So this is a first for me lol

But honestly, everything about this movie leads me to believe it will be good. Really great cast, lots of talent, seems like good source material (sorry don't know it but looks cool).

It was a weird artistic choice but it doesn't ruin it for me. What will more likely ruin the film for me will be it being a crappy western adaptation of a beloved anime/manga from my youth. Time will tell.

Looks cool to me. The eyes do give her a bit of a cartoony look, which is a smidge weird only because the rest of her face is soooo realistic. But hey, she's a robot.

If twitter were around during ST: TNG, people would be saying "OMG, why is Data so PALE?!" and news outlets would immediately brand the character and show a failure.

Who care about her creepy eyes, other than the terminator looking robot with the human face near the end that tries to choke her this has to be some of the worst CG animation and effects I've seen in years.

Her eyes look like what a person who has never read a manga in their lives thinks a manga character should look like in live action.

In the manga she was explicitly created to mimic the look of a younger version of a princess. A human princess. As in, not some bizarre monstrosity whose eyes are about fall out because her parents were the inbred type of royals.

@novaprime1985: Absolutely. Isn't she some kind of robot anyway? Who gives a crap what her eyes look like? People are as dumb as the day is long. A bunch of brainless sheep just waiting for something new to hate on for no reason.

For once I actually agree with Twitter.

I hate her eyes with a violent passion. Which really sucks because I'm a huge fan of the manga.

I have absolutely no problem with how this character is portrayed. I actually found her image strangely haunting and really unsettling to look at, yet strangely captivating. Now that is great art direction.

Those comments from Twitter are quite harsh. This is a movie based on an anime in which the character has massive, as is common in most, if not all, animes. I understand that Alita was designed with big eyes in the movie because of that. I also understand making her a CGI character entirely. Alita is a robot from an anime. I personally see these as design and artistic decisions and don't have anything against it. If people want to see a realistic movie with real people there are also plenty of those. So go see those instead. Me, I'm looking forward to seeing this movie and am open to something different. People are entitled to like what they like and have the opinions they want within the law of the free world.

@sebb: Most characters in anime have huge eyes, that's why it works well in anime and manga.

This is a live action movie in which she is the only character to have screwed up eyes, which is especially jarring since her character was specifically created to be in the exact image of a human princess.

I take issue both with the decision to do this, and its logic to justify it.

@sebb: agreed. even within the context of the manga itself, alita's eyes are larger than that of other characters. she is supposed to have doll-like proportions so the producers did the original design justice here. if people don't like the aesthetics of the lead character, they should still give the movie on the whole a fair chance because it looks like it might turn out rather well.

@Xristophoros: In the manga, her eyes are no bigger than any other female or young character.

I don't where this bullshit about her intending to look like a doll came from, but she was created to look exactly like a younger version of a human princess, not some doll monstrosity.

Of all the damn Anime for this mofo to do an adaptation of he chooses.................. THIS

And of course if it flops then it'll serve as example for idiots saying "see, that's why animes/ manga can't be made into great movies.

I'm sure something like that was probably once said about comic books turned into movies before they started getting big budgets and talented directors making them

The trailer on Youtube has more likes than dislikes by a ratio of 7.5:1, so saying the internet hates it is false. Obviously if you look on Twitter all you will see is hate, mockery and generally negative feedback, because those are the types of reactions that Twitter thrives on and amplifies, but it's not indicative of most people's opinion.

As to my own opinion of the trailer, as a massive fan of the manga who read every book years ago, I think it looks pretty good! Will have to wait for the full movie, but many of the images are ripped straight from the manga pages, which is awesome, and they seem to be sticking pretty close to the original story too. I'm hopeful it'll be an R rated movie, since the original's action and explicit violence were a big part of the aesthetic, and knowing Rodriguez I doubt he would shy away from that stuff. I just still can't believe that such a big budget movie is being made about a relatively niche manga, I think that's pretty cool and I'm excited to check it out.

@sebb: Yeah could be. Apparently James Cameron has been a big fan of Alita since the original run of the manga series in the 90's too, and I think he's probably one of the few people with enough influence in the movie business to get something this obscure made with such a huge budget.
