Two Worlds II is done after all - TopWare

Studio refutes publisher SouthPeak's claim that delay was due to unfinished state of game, says North American publisher instead wanted to avoid crowded holiday for RPGs.

Yesterday, SouthPeak Interactive delayed the North American launch of Two Worlds II until January, suggesting it wanted the game to be "absolutely flawless" when it launched. The implication that the role-playing game was in an unfinished state and needed extra development time didn't sit well with TopWare Interactive, the company making Two Worlds II along with developer Reality Pump. Presumably, the notion that the game was unfinished also didn't sit well with the game's European publisher Zuxxez, which still plans to release it in a handful of territories October 21.

The universe of Two Worlds II is finished. Err…except for this bridge.
The universe of Two Worlds II is finished. Err…except for this bridge.

TopWare today told GameSpot that development on Two Worlds II had finished and that SouthPeak's decision was actually made due to an "exceptionally crowded" 2010 holiday season of RPGs.

"Truth be told, fans only have so much time to spend playing these content-rich games, and there were concerns our title could potentially be lost in the fanfare," TopWare managing director James Seaman said in a statement. "Our publishing partner SouthPeak, to their credit, has acknowledged this fact and made an adjustment, postponing their launch of Two Worlds II into early 2011."

The TopWare statement went on to call SouthPeak's assertion that the game wasn't finished "factually incorrect." All production, bug testing, and localization work was finished in mid-September, the company said, adding that this year and next year's Two Worlds II launches will contain the same content (except for patches or updates released in the interim, which could make it onto the 2011 retail launch disc). Instead of working to finish up the core Two Worlds II game, Reality Pump is instead readying its post-launch support and downloadable content plans.

I actually spoke at length with a SouthPeak chief producer at PAX2010 last year in regards to this game. We spoke about numerous topics, but the one thing that stands out was he knew they had missed the boat on many aspects of the first game - this title was their one shot to make amends to the community. If they didn't make it right this time, there would be limited opportunity to save the franchise. I appreciated his honesty, and what I saw at the convention was nothing short of exciting.

Lucky i live in europe and this game is out already.. put it this way i got the demo.. and brought it straight away and aint stopped playing for a good few days now.. I would say the worse thing is the game so far is the horse riding.. acting aint super but its a game so dont bother me too much. Looks awesome, sound is also good and combat works really well :) Story is keeping me interested so far as well as the side quests. This is worth the wait guys :)

This game could be good. It could be bad. Most likely it will be a mixed experience. I only hope that the size of the world is not as intimidating as the first one.

@Murder422 "Who cares about a company going bankrupt? Thats their fault for running the company poorly, making bad decisions or bad products" Which is why I'm telling you this is a good decision. "I care about playing games" Games you can't play if the company goes bankrupt, since a company is required to create them. Is this too hard a concept for you to grasp? Also: Tune in for people that aren't native English speakers. This is not a test, you are not a teacher and if you have nothing to add to the discussion besides criticizing my acceptable English (try talking my native language, bet you'd do a much poorer job) then you shouldn't have bothered replying in the first place. "Thats their fault" "Thats" is not equal to "That is". I think you meant "That's". See, I can do it too! Thanks for your input though, love it when people try acting smart and then fail miserably at it.

Well I'm sure the Europeans feel better now that the whole statement turning their release into a glorified beta test has been refuted.

Hmmm. If it weren't for the imminent release of Fallout Las Vegas and Gothic 4, I may be impatient enough to try to track down a European distributor. However, those two games should keep me occupied for long enough to await TW's release in Q1 2011.

I'm explaining why they can't do what you want them to if they want to sell as much as they can. Based on a number of factors, yours would not be a good business decision. Faith does not make miracles on game sales.

@TheGreyArea Uh'oh! Tune in next week when BigBigR gets his account 1 year before the first game was ever released, 2 years before someone got his. Tune in for putting words on a company's mouth and telling them to go do what they can't just so someone can have more variety at his table, while said company loses money and never again makes a sequel. No more logical argument? Stay classy. You know it's very unlikely for this game to beat the other big ones. "The first game was one of the worst, unfinished games I've EVER played." seems to be the general consensus. Borderlands did not have a bad reputation to clean, it's a different game and it had Take Two behind its back. Just because you gave it a 9.5 doesn't mean it serves better as an example than all those other games that have failed before. I agree with that score though.

to have nearly a 3 month difference in retail releases between european and N.American release, has to be a big mistake. I mean thier offcial statement made use of the realization that people using PC's will Pirate the game. I have mine preordered for 360. I'm a big fan and follower of the lore they have created and the amazing progress they have made on the 2nd iteration. However this is not a very nice way to treat the loyal fanbase 1 week from the supposed release date.

LOL; they must thing we are pretty dumb to believe the 'unfinished' crap. Sorta like when they hold a pc game a week after the console version releases and try to explain it as an additional week of 'tweaking'. Besides, I'll just import the f*** like I did with demon souls.

I want the game now. The company's money is their problem. Don't make me suffer for it. Lame Lame Lame...If you make quality products on time by using quality people with quality management and quality marketing this ish would never happen. The problem is quality over all. Humanity's quality. If you cant afford 4 games a month...then step up your wallet's quality. I wish everyone was as dope as me and you if you are reading this... I'm real....He's not.

I'm not sure why there is so much hate for the first game. I got it when it was already quite old from GoG for like $10. I have ended up spending a lot more time in it than in Oblivion (even heavily modded) and FO3 combined. Is it the same? No, it's kind of hokey. You can get overpowered very quickly (2h melee attack anyone?) but to me that's part of the fun simply because that OP feeling is so avoided in many of our current games. Anyway, despite having a lark with TW1 I probably won't buy TW2 at release whether January or otherwise, but will wait for the first significant price drop.

I got the first game at a bargain price long after it was released so it was patched and ran pretty good. It has a very extensive world and a good story and gameplay. Well worth a look. Dont be put off by the early reviews. I will definitely play Two Worlds II; but when will depend on the early reviews. If it needs a lot of patching I'll wait.

@TheGreyArea "A diverse selection of GOOD GAMES around peak retail periods creates a better market place for the buyer" At the cost of the developers of those games, since they're fighting with each other for sales. You expect TopWare to screw itself over just so you can have more options? Consider the following: A lady gives bread to a group of cats 4 times a year. This years last bread is sought by many big cats, and TopWare the cat decided to wait and get next years bread all to himself, or if not all, at least certainly more than he would get this year against all those big cats. Why would he risk getting clobbered by those cats besides proving his cathood? He'd still get less bread, even if he won. "But I truly do hate when publishers back down from the compettition." You're thinking from the consumer's POV, and that's all good, but that logic won't apply to a company's POV. "It's almost as well as saying that "our game isn't as good as the one we're avoiding launching with. Buy that one instead and buy ours later"." That is not what they're implying, it's not even "almost". Which is what I'm trying to explain, giving a rational explanation for their behavior. Not everyone can afford to fight with the big boys, like you want them to, and if everyone did that we'd have even more studios closing than we have now. Also, TW2 has a negative reputation due to the first game, so it's even harder to succeed against the big titles.

@TheGreyArea A game has to be top notch to be able to compete against the more widely known titles. Borderlands was top notch (I have it), but you know as well as I do that it was the exception to the rule that I stated before. For that one game to be successful amidst all those great games, many others have failed. For that 1 example you gave me I could give hundreds countering it. I bet TopWare doesn't think their game sucks, but to be able to say with all certainty that their game will be a GOTY contender, that it will get great reviews everywhere? They might sure as hell want that, but it'd be foolish of them to just assume it will be so, no matter the polish they put into that game. I bet Ubisoft/Infinity Ward thought AC2/MW2 would be GOTY, but they had no way of knowing the monster known as Uncharted 2 was on the way. TopWare doesn't know how good those other games will turn out to be, and therefore can't assume theirs will be the best. They're playing it safe, and some people just can't wait a couple months to play their games. You want them to risk losing money and kill any chances of a sequel just to be more competitive? It just makes more sense to release it next year, where it won't be overwhelmed by the other big titles and therefore sell more, be it good or bad. Borderlands would've sold even more without those other big titles. And games mostly have fixed prices, it would make no difference if they released it now or not regarding the price.

"...[snip] didn't sit well with the game's European publisher Zuxxez, which still plans to release it in a handful of territories October 21. " And this is exactly what the problem is with the game industry as a whole. Didn't we just witness (something like) five major high profile games that were released prematurely within the last six months that went over like turds in a punchbowl? Don't publishers read the news and do research on other top releases to get an idea of what happens when you release too early to save a few bucks? Sometimes you have to spend money to make money and I certainly wouldn't want my name on the side of the box of a half-finished product which will work against any future releases. Use your head, Corporates...it's time to wake up.

instead of ripping off, or riding the wow fame Wave... publishers need to look at the talent they have and invest some hard millions into a long term project, but if they have the right intellectual property backed by some confident investors u can definately make somthin to compete with wow
