Ubisoft Cancels Three Unannounced Projects, Skull And Bones Delayed Yet Again

After a holiday season that saw several of its games underperform, Ubisoft is refocusing its efforts on established brands.

Ubisoft has updated its strategy for the near future, and in a new statement, has revealed that it has canceled three unannounced games and has delayed Skull and Bones yet again. Attributing this leaner focus on "major challenges" and an industry that it says is shifting towards "mega-brands and long-lasting titles," Ubisoft says that its recent launches have not performed as well as expected.

The holiday season, which usually sees major business for Ubisoft, was a "surprisingly slower" period for the company, and as a result, it'll be focusing more of its efforts on building its current brands and live service titles. "As a consequence, we have decided to cancel three unannounced projects, on top of the four already announced in July 2022," Ubisoft said.

Now Playing: Skull and Bones: Gameplay Trailer

"We are clearly disappointed by our recent performance," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said. "We are facing contrasted market dynamics as the industry continues to shift towards mega-brands and everlasting live games, in the context of worsening economic conditions affecting consumer spending. Despite excellent ratings and players' reception as well as an ambitious marketing plan, we were surprised by Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope underperformance in the final weeks of 2022 and early January. Just Dance 2023 underperformed as well."

Ubisoft has revised its Q3 2022-23 net bookings target, which it now expects to reach approximately $779 million versus its prior target of approximately $831 million. Skull and Bones, which has been delayed several times since it was first revealed and was due to set sail on March 9, will be released in the 2024 fiscal year, which spans April 1, 2023-March 31, 2024. The game will have an upcoming beta phase before it launches, and Ubisoft believes that this will lead to a much more polished and balanced experience.

This isn't the first time that Ubisoft has pulled the plug on several of its projects, as back in July 2022, it announced that it had canceled development on Splinter Cell VR, Ghost Recon: Frontline, and two unannounced titles.

First you have to get rid off that annoying launcher and stupidly expensive Ubisoft+ noone asked for, and bring all your games to Steam, than we can talk business.

Oh, btw - they have an offer now (until 19th of January) - try Ubisoft+ for 1 euro / a month and then 15 euros after.

They are announcing that they are cancelling unannounced games. What’s the point of announcing this? Also, with 7 games cancelled in six months, is there anything left?

Essentially, they are opting to release the same crap they have been doing instead of attempting real innovation. Can't wait for 6 more Assassin's Creed games full of maps/POIs that need to be uncovered by climbing more towers. <sigh>

Maybe just dance underperformed because its no longer a game but a game you are required to subscribe monthly to for any real content.

I hope they are still doing a SW game and its a big open world one, we already have a great tight experience with Fallen Order & hopefully survivor.

@Smokin105: With this delay, I've finally decided to give up. It's very rare for a game delayed this long to be worth it when/if it is finally released.

Other than valhalla final DLC they havent released anything in 2022 and the rabbids collaboration is with nintendo.

Maybe if they didnt trashed the might and magic IP by milking it on phones they could have something long lasting.

i think that they should focus on smaller tighter games.

i have been a fan of ubi for years and probably owned all of their single player open worlds. but they are just getting bigger worlds but not more engaging content. valhalla was a chore to finish the main game, i cant even bring myself to look at the dlcs that i own just burned out on the whole thing

@skritch: it’s been this way for years with ubisoft, not everyone plays all their games so some notice it later than others.

Their open world games are extremely formulaic and drab. Assassins creed, far cry, watch dogs, ghost recon etc. They may have started out good and even have good elements here and there but overall the copy and paste mentality they have for their games is disappointing. I’m wary as soon as I know a game is being made by them. I hope more people catch on so they can actually course correct.

Not surprised. The future is broke as fudge online only games. The writing has been on the wall for years.

What are the chances skull and bones is going to be any good after all these delays and changes in direction? Ubisoft seems to really need a change of direction.

@drod0756: It will probably be great. They're listening to player feedback and fleshing it out/polishing to create something better, instead of the watered down stuff we've seen so far.

@Dilandau88: Maybe all these delays will be for the best. I personally loved Black Flag so I have been hoping this takes it to the next level, but all these delays dont give me confidence. Hopefully they figure it out and it isnt a let down whenever it is finally released

@Dilandau88: When was the last time a game that's been delayed this long been good? The previous delay to March 2023 was officially because they needed "further time to polish and balance the experience using players' feedback from our technical tests and Insider Program."

Now they're delaying the game perhaps until 2024! This is yet another strong signal this game will be awful, if it's ever released at all.

@WarGameJunkie: FF15,,Diablo 3,,MGS V,,

Alot of games end up being awesome.

And I didn't like Diablo 3 at Launch.

I returned two years later and totally diff game.

I feel ya about how gaming is filled with alot of crap news all the time.

@WarGameJunkie: game needs polish. Would you rather a half assed game that gets updated to a full game years later, after you paid in full? Or get the full experience on release
