Ubisoft CEO Apologizes For Company's Culture, Offensive Game Content In Video Statement

Yves Guillemot addressed the allegations of harassment and assault that have led to the removal of several high-profile employees.

Following allegations of sexual assault, harassment, and mistreatment at Ubisoft that began several months ago, the company's CEO Yves Guillemot has provided a video statement addressing these issues. This comes just before its second Ubisoft Forward presentation.

"This summer, we learned that certain employees did not uphold our company's values and that our systems failed to protect the victims of their behavior," Guillemot said in the video. "I am truly sorry to everyone that was hurt. We have taken significant steps to remove or sanction all those who violated our values and code of conduct, and we are working now to improve our systems and processes."

Guillemot added that Ubisoft is working to make the company a more diverse and inclusive place to work, including an additional $1 million investment in its graduate program over the next five years. It will also debut a new version of its Womxn Develop at Ubisoft mentorship, launching on September 14 in three cities.

In addition to addressing the allegations, which led to the removal or resignation of several high-profile employees, Guillemot also apologized for content in the mobile game Tom Clancy's Elite Squad that painted a group similar to Black Lives Matter as agitators looking to control citizens. Ubisoft is making a donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, as well.

"This kind of oversight cannot happen," he said. "We are putting in place safeguards to prevent it in the future."

The studio head for Tom Clancy's Elite Squad developer Owlient is Charlie Guillemot. He is Yves Guillemot's son.

Ubisoft was criticized for not releasing a video statement prior to its first Ubisoft Forward in July. Thought his video was released separately from its upcoming Ubisoft Forward event, it will be included in VOD versions of it afterward. Guillemot also seemed to brush off questions about it in a recent meeting. One of the most powerful executives fired for alleged harassment was Tommy Francois, whose power was such that he could essentially greenlight or kill projects at will.

So are they going to quit acting like horrible people? Will they quit the exclusivity deals with Epic and release more games on Steam and GOG? Will they make their games more polished instead of glitchy messes? Are they going to ditch over aggressive monitization of their games? There's more important issues they should be addressing from my perspective as a gamer.

If there was any doubt that this wasn't just a disingenuous Typical PR Response by Ubisoft, then their apology for the portrayal of BLM stand-ins in Tom Clancy's Elite Squad ought to have eliminated it. BLM has thoroughly revealed themselves to be anarchists at best, if not a full-blown terrorist organization which promotes black supremacy because apparently they think it's cool to loot businesses, attack civilians, and commit arson as "reparations" for slavery that has long since been abolished and none of them were ever had to suffer, so they're entitled to nothing, and if there was any debt to be paid, then I think that the lives of Union Soldiers who fought for the freedom of their ancestors during the Civil War and effectively put an end to slavery is more than adequate compensation for their inane suffrage by proxy and hypocritical victim complex.

So yeah, Ubisoft could have and should have taken the opportunity to publicly denounce the hate crimes committed by BLM and admitted that the terrorist group featured in Tom Clancy's Elite Squad was a deliberate social satire of BLM, but that would have taken courage, honesty, and integrity. So yeah, they're full of it, and any Sexual Misconduct which took place within Ubisoft was likely deliberately overlooked because they don't actually give a hoot, ergo they only took action because they were afraid of bad press cutting into their profits.

How much did Yves know, though. Either

1) He knew nothing and was negligent towards the people he employs.

2) He knew some of it and didn't bother looking any deeper

3) He knew everything and helped cover it up.

Either way, Ubisoft had employees who were sex offenders and rapists in their company for decades and rather than fire them, they promoted them.

...not from anyone that matters. Ubisoft did some f'ed up shit and needed/needs to seriously address the problem; but there's no reason to virtue signal about their internal investigations and accusations in their E3-like sizzle reel showing new games coming up. Most of the people that watch those kinds of videos would just skip past that part anyway.

@Dragon_Nexus:

Here's the definition of terrorism: “the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives”

Here are a few links to incidents involving BLM.

Ariel Atkins, a BLM Chicago organizer, encourages looting and calls it reparations

Man killed by BLM activist for being a Trump supporter

BLM activists try to seal police officers inside building and burn it down

BLM activists attack random diners at restaurant

BLM/Antifa activists take over several city blocks in Seattle, multiple shootings, deaths (including two teenagers), and at least one reported rape due to activists preventing police and EMTs access to victims

Man at BLM protester kills innocent woman and injures four others

Man throws Molotov cocktails at two police vehicles during BLM protest

Woman sets fire to five police vehicles during BLM protest

BLM activist beats innocent kneeling man to unconsciousness

Those are just the ones that immediately came to mind, but the list goes on and on and on. Yeah, they're not filming themselves beheading people like ISIS, but the movement absolutely fits the definition of a terrorist organization.

@HayateTokidoki: So are you happy to extend that definition to everyone who took part in the Covid protests earlier this year demanding hair cuts and the ability to shop again?

Do you extend that definition to NRA advocates?

@Dragon_Nexus: You're making this too easy. First, you didn't actually refute the clear evidence that BLM does, in fact, qualify as a terrorist organization. Second, you just redirected the discussion to perceived right-wing groups, but you brought up two things that objectively DON'T qualify as terrorism.

he COVID lockdown protests were non-violent protests (also, they were about something far different than wanting a haircut and to be able to go shopping). If you can cite specific violence committed by the NRA that meets the actual definition of terrorism, I'm open to hearing it. If all you have is nebulous nonsense about how the NRA is pro-2A so therefore they are responsible for all gun violence, then you don't really have an argument.

There's a big difference between riots, arson, looting, murder, assault, and intimidation on a mass scale, and lobbying and protesting peacefully. I'm all for peaceful protest (even if I disagree with the views of the protesters). That's what the civil rights movement was, and it worked. I'm all for police reform and holding officers accountable when they use excessive force, lethal or otherwise. But BLM is committing mass violence on innocent people right now, and that is terrorism.

I don't really care about the game one way or the other, but from the description of the in-game group in the linked article, it sounds like a pretty accurate representation of what BLM has become. What is there to apologize for?

@HayateTokidoki: That's the thing, their leaders/spokesmen have outright admitted they are not against using violence in order to get things done. The concept itself, black lives matter, is absolutely important. But the organisation itself, they're doing more to harm than help.

But of course, it's not politically correct to criticise them. That's the issue here.

@nabinator: Exactly. The phrase "black lives matter" is self-evident. No one disagrees with that. The BLM organization and many of its adherents are awful, though. They encourage looting (apparently smashing store windows and stealing whatever you want is "reparations"), they riot, they terrorize people, and they do it all with virtual impunity. I live near Seattle and have seen the effects of the organization firsthand. Currently, there are multiple wildfires burning in the area and causing mass destruction. Three of the fires so far are confirmed to be arson, and one of the arsonists is a BLM activist who has been arrested for trying to blow up a car (by his own admission) and for bringing a weapons cache (a 7-inch knife in his backpack, a box of ammunition, an assault rifle, a shotgun, and a box full of illegal fireworks) to an anti-police riot. These fires are minutes from my home and put the lives of my family at risk. My son's preschool is across the street from the biggest fire. I'm done keeping quiet about BLM. The movement is trash. It's a violent, racist, hateful, insurrectionist cancer.

I know this is more than likely going to rub some folks the wrong way, but what in the Sam Hill does this have to do with making quality video games.

Honestly, I feel the world has gone completely crazy in regards to social justice and political correctness to the point where companies would rather sacrifice the quality of their products just to ensure a message is pushed out to the masses.

It’s seriously making me want to develop a time machine just to go back to the 80s and 90s where games were games first and foremost and any political statements were incidental for the most part as opposed to mandatory. 😑

But yes. Please go off on how not wanting to be groped, assaulted and raped at work is "Political correctness gone mad"

@Dragon_Nexus: People complaining about political correctness aren't complaining about the things you just entailed. No one in their right mind wants that for anyone. I wouldn't even call a game that has themes of that sexual assault or rape 'politically correct.' It's just human, much like a story about murder, tragedy or betrayal.

What's annoying, is when more and more games seem designed just to drive some kind of ideological message. The emphasis isn't on making awesome games anymore, as it is on delivering a message.

If a particular creator has a message that he wants to deliver/touch on, that's different. Go for it. But when it becomes an industry standard and something that faceless corporations enforce (while committing those same sins in the shadows), it's highly hypocritical and rubs people the wrong way. It's like hollywood actors telling everyone to be green and take care of the earth, while they ride around in private jets and live in mega mansions that use enough energy to power a small town.

@nabinator: I think that part of the reason it's a big deal here is because Ubisoft brought it on themselves. I'm not talking about the fact that sexual predators worked in the company, but the fact that almost every single one of their games over the past decade had that disclaimer bragging how all their games were made by men and women of various backgrounds. It was pretty eyerolling, and it's as if Ubisoft was bragging about being the paragon of companies that everyone else should emulate. The fact that Ubisoft has one of the worst corporate cultures as such puts them in the spotlight far more than the average company, because they kept bragging about how PC they were all this time.

Watched the video on that and I can see how it could look like Black Lives Matter, but I feel like that is just timing more than targeting them particularly. Seriously, riots, social media to discredit political leaders, etc is nothing new and will remain that way after BLM is gone.

It was a good move to cover their own ass, but this was just timing and a generic plot used both in real life and fiction long before this. None of this is new.

Well...yeah? Releasing a game with that plot, that iconography (the iconography isn't even new) and being that tone deaf *right now* of all times? Yeah, that was a big, dumb mistake.

@Dragon_Nexus: Yes, the "just" may not have been the best choice of words as I could be wrong on that. I just don't want to say for certain that this may be targeting current events. This is something that has been used in media for years and in real life in the past. So right now all I got is it is just timing (Or partial of the reason) as one possible options among others without any definitive proof like most of us.
