Ubisoft CEO says Rayman Legends on Wii U wouldn't "sell enough"

Guillemot defends decision to delay the game and go multiplatform.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said the once-exclusive Wii U version of Rayman Legends wouldn't have been able to shift enough copies to be successful, which is why the French publisher delayed the title alongside developing Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Vita versions.

No Caption Provided

"What happened was that we saw the Wii U was not going to sell enough," said Guillemot in an interview with VentureBeat. "The game is going to be fantastic, and we didn’t want those creators to wind up in a position where even after making a fantastic game, they didn’t sell well enough."

"We decided that we had to come out on enough machines that players can try it out on any one that they have, and give more time to both improve the game on the Wii U and create versions for the other consoles."

Despite news of the delay angering hordes of Nintendo fans anxious for promising new software on the Wii U, Guillemot thinks Ubisoft made the right call. "I think it was the right decision for gamers and for the team. My role is to make sure that the team is happy with the quality of the work they do and the reach they can have. The quality is there now, because they had more time. They’ve expanded the possibilities of the game. It’s much bigger content-wise. We have new bosses in key levels and so on. The experience is much more complete."

As an apology to Wii U owners, Ubisoft released the game's Challenge mode for free as an attempt to soothe the wait for the game. Rayman Legends will be released on August 30 in Europe, and September 3 in North America.

"I think it will be one of the best games we’ve ever done," concluded Guillemot.

In other words: "We found out we wouldn't make as much money as we wanted. So we decided to go back on our word so we could."

Seems like money is ALL that matters with 3rd parties these days. Very few companies have any integrity.

He definitely made the right call. I have a Wii U because I can afford to buy a console for just one game, (ZombiU) but even the average hardcore fan needs to see more third party support before they will consider buying a Wii U.

Is he not aware that this is going to make the game sell worse? Wii U users are going to boycott the game because they got shafted and the PS3 and 360 sales probably aren't going to make up for it. Also, they're releasing it at the worst time possible because now it's going up against fall must-haves like GTA V.

I was going to get this game, but now I'd rather spend my money on Pokemon X and Y.

@SirNinjaCube REally? If every player of Wii U decides to not buy the game, it will still sell a lot more than before. Wii U sales were ridiculous.

And still, they had more time to improve the game, I see no reason for anyone to boycot a company because of that.

And about timing, GTA V will be released in November. And the games are so different, that this won't change. Really, I'll buy both of them, because I really like them. Games are not like Cell Phone, you buy the ones you like the most. If you like 2 games, you'll buy them both.

@ziqi92 It is ridiculous, because he says he did this "for the team."

You know, the team that was told to work mandatory 80-hour weeks for four months straight to get the game to launch on Wii U, only for the completed game to get pushed off for eight months.

Thank god they made the decision. Otherwise i would have to wait for a WiiU emulator . just like i did when Rayman Origins came to Wii. I played flawless on the Emulator with my Ps3 gamepad connected to the PC. And after i bought the PC version when it got released. Because i would never use a Wii or even a WiiU, its a sin !!!!

@javalino Nintendo's anti-piracy policy seems to be weird hardware, it would be interesting to see how a Wii U emulator worked unless you synced a gamepad with your PC.

Why would they think such a thing when Nintendo didn't even put Mario on their Wii U demos but Rayman Legends instead, while continuously advertising the game alongside their 1st party offerings? In February, the Wii U practically had nothing coming out except Rayman Legends so all the more the game would've gotten a good amount of attention. If the game bombs when it comes out, especially on other platforms, there's no one to blame but Ubisoft.

The irony of Yves' statement is I since Rayman is one of the few games to take FULL advantage of the gamepad, it would have sold systems. You can say what you want but if Rayman was released in February to good reviews, it would have sold well. The Wii U, at the time, was having a severe game drought (just like NOW) and Rayman would have been the only new game available for Wii U for awhile. But apparently, releasing a game in September is better since GTA 5 and a few other heavy hitters are coming out....right?

@ewjiml Absolutely true. I have never bought a Rayman title but I was going to pick this one up because of the Wii U's software drought. By the time it finally comes out? Forget Rayman, I'll be playing Pikmin and gearing up for Sonic.

Yeah, trying to compete with big hitters like GTA5 with a niche game in a niche genre when they could've had great timing with the Wii U during a game drought doesn't seem that smart to me.

It's like Kingdoms of Amalur releasing alongside Skyrim. Or any not so big-name game releasing alongside a big name one like Call of Duty. Not exactly the best idea.

I'm pretty sure we all knew that. But hey, they were one of the few, or only ones, that admitted it. Still doesn't explain why they delayed a finished game 6 months (it's probably Microsoft's policy but of course they won't admit it).

It doesn't matter what Nintendo fans think. They need to do what is right for their company. I've never played or am even interesting in the Rayman series, but I'm glad they recognized that they wouldn't be able to sell enough copies of the game on the Wii U to justify its development. Its also good because it it lets more players experience the game.

And now it'll sell even less on the Wii U with this 7 month delay. Could've just released it back in February when 90% of Wii U owners were going to buy it because it was all that was out there, and released the others console editions in September.

Brilliant strategy Ubisoft.

@jd7904 If it had come out on it's release date it would be a very different story but I can't see me picking this up now that the end of the Wii U's software drought is in sight...even if I came across it discounted. Plenty of other games will be out by then that I'd rather play.

I have absolutely no problem with more people being able to enjoy this game. What really upsets me is not only were we promised the game at a certain time, but the devs themselves even said the game is done and ready to go. So while they work on porting it, I don't see why Ubisoft can't just let the game be released on time as planned. I am enjoying the Challenges, but the fact of the matter is that it is merely a little bit of candy to try to distract us from the fact that they let us down. Not sure if I will get this game anymore because the launch window now coincides with other games I'd rather have, and I hope Ubisoft suffers because of this. Then on the other hand I don't want to not support the actual devs because I love them and they deserve the support. Tough choice.

That does make sense since the WiiU has a smaller user base , but GTA5. They picked the worst time to release it though.

Look, putting ANY game on more consoles makes the most sense if you're a 3rd party, so I don't blame them for releasing it on the others, too. What does NOT compute, though, is delaying it on Wii U. Why not take advantage of the software drought and seize the opportunity a TIMED exclusive would represent? Wii U owners get it when promised, and everyone else gets it eventually. Win, win. Instead, they delayed it for one group and chose to release it when other big titles will have been released, or are on their way, increasing the odds the game just gets lost in the shuffle. Even the people working on the game didn't get that move.
