Ubisoft Doubles Down On Open-World And Live-Service Games

"That's what we want to deliver year after year."

As part of Ubisoft's earnings report, the company discussed what kinds of games it wants to focus on going forward--and these include open-world action adventure titles and games-as-a-service projects.

Ubisoft executive Frederick Duguet said on an earnings call that the company has been "investing significantly" in recent times on a "big pipeline" of its two main product categories. These are the aforementioned open-world action adventure and games-as-a-service genres. "That's what we want to deliver year after year," the executive said.

Ubisoft focusing on big open-world games and live-service titles is nothing new for the company. However, historically, Ubisoft had a more diverse lineup of games spanning multiple different genres and formats. And not every live-service project has worked out for Ubisoft, as the company launched and shut down games like XDefiant and Hyper Scape relatively quickly. The pirate game Skull & Bones is still up and running but hasn't exactly broken through to become a hit.

Duguet went on to list off some of Ubisoft's upcoming projects that have been announced so far, including Assassin's Creed Shadows and more ongoing updates for Rainbow Six Siege, Anno 117: Pax Romana, and The Division Resurgence. The executive said the company will share more details about other upcoming games around May, which is when Ubisoft will release its next earnings report. That's also around when many game companies open the floodgates for gaming news throughout the summer season after various shows and events.

Whatever Ubisoft has coming--and the company hasn't said much about its future title slate--Duguet said the company has a "strong pipeline for the future years." It is expected that Ubisoft would speak in this manner. Duguet was responding to a question about the company's future outlook, and presenting it in a rosy and robust manner is normal behavior for an executive speaking to analysts.

Regarding Assassin's Creed Shadows, the game is coming this March and preorder numbers are tracking in line with those of Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Ubisoft said. Odyssey was the second most successful entry in the entire Assassin's Creed franchise, according to Ubisoft, though it didn't say by what metric.

In other news, Ubisoft is in the midst of a cost-reduction program that has resulted in layoffs and studio closures. CEO Yves Guillemot said these changes were "difficult but necessary." Additionally, Ubisoft is undergoing a "formal review process" for helping to turn its business around, with one potential scenario being a deal of some type with Tencent. Guillemot said of negotiations about the company's future, "We are convinced there are different potential paths to achieve this ambition."

Whether it's open world or live service, Ubisoft is in real need of new ideas. Another Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, or live service game from Ubisoft sound like just about the least exciting thing in gaming right now.

Perhaps instead of trying to squeeze the customer for every last drop of blood, just focus on making good, non-politically charged games without overly aggressive monetization. It's really not rocket science.

Alas, they will likely collapse this year under the weight of their own hubris.

Classic. They’ve learned absolutely nothing. Oh well. There are too many good games these days. I don’t have time to waste on Ubisoft anymore. This sounds like a forever farewell from me.

Ubisoft executive Frederick Duguet said "investing significantly".... in having a hand in imploding the company with ideas that in recent years that do not work. *Proceeds to pull out a feather and tickle the ear of an investor* - we like playing with feathers more than making good games!

CEO Yves Guillemot= vote of No confidence!

This dude made bad decisions with AssCreed,Farcry & Esp Skull & Bones.

~Skull & Bones alone revealed how mediocre this dudes leadership was.

6 delays & twice overhauled..

All we fans wanted was Black Flag sailing but full game.

~FarCry 6 + Primal were crap.

~Xdefiant alone shoulda made them scrap all Live Service crappy business models. They know fans dont want it.

~Division is getting another game?

I was all in on Division1 & bought the CE edition.

Atleast i learned a lesson to never pre order..

Well they could've played it safe with just focusing on The Division franchise but instead they cancel it and go for things like xdefiant and other games that got almost no appeal.

It makes investors happy, ....

I mean sadly, these live service games do very well, even though plenty have bombed. I would like to say, this fad of live service games will eventually die, but... look at marvel rivals. Some of these games make billions.

And they have a generation of gamers, that know nothing else. As much as we think us older single player gamers can still move the needle in the gaming industry. I mean just look up the most popular live service games and see what they bring in each month. There are tons of young people, that have only known games on their phones/ tablets. They freak out if their phone messages/alerts are not also part of the platform. And who have been groomed into whales, with mechanics aimed at milking another dollar at every corner.... and they like it.

But Ubisoft, just cannot make a good game with the management and talent they have at present, so even a live service game is still going to suck. With luck, maybe they can turn Ubisoft it around.

@jenovaschilld: Correct/agreed..

The problem with us now older single player gamers

is we don't buy anything micro transaction & usually not even lame cosmetic nonsense..

Of course they don't want us to be the target audience..

TenCent is everything wrong with gaming today all in one company.

@sippio: Exactly.

I was talking to someone, that pre-tech bust, pre-investment funding bust in gaming industry, Tencent was not a bit interested in making great games, they only wanted to buy up publishers / developers (in bed with Sony, also xbox and nintendo some as well). Tencent was only interested in buying up chunks of video game productions and listing blocks of it to heavy investment fundraising. Much like the housing industry of old. Just buy up everything, sale blocks of investment at certain %, and make your money off the stock increases. They could care less if the games were good bad or amazing, as long as the line of investment funding whales were a mile long. Half will lose money, half will make money, but Tencent will shave off a good % either way-- what about games, who the f%$k cares about games at Tencent.

Now, post sky is limit with games, and tech... Tencent and the entire gaming industry knows that live service games only has so much bandwidth, and so much of them can exist at one time. No one is going to knock off Fortnite, no one is going to make a 2009 WoW, no one is going to make Genshin impact killer, or a world of tanks. But investors are desperate for another Marvel Rivals, GTA online, etc that makes billions per year, as very little cost going in. The only thing happening with live service games, is long shots are closed down and moved to much better chance of succeeding live service games.

I have kids, they are grown, I work with others who have young teens, and very few care about consoles or gaming pcs. They want laptops, phones, and switches/steamdeck, and maybe tablets. The idea of physical is, just confusing to them. They think all games should be free, and microtransactions is how they make money.

I am going to age myself, kind of like Columbia house music, one cd/cassette for a penny, and then you buy one each month for 2-4 yrs. Whatever. A way to get a game going, and then you pay for it later.

We old gamers are just that, an old business model, that the industry just wants to die off. Especially Ubisoft.
