Ubisoft DRM games to be temporarily unplayable

Publisher's antipiracy scheme will prevent customers from playing some of its Mac and PC games for an undetermined period of time during server transition starting February 7.

Starting next week, a number of Ubisoft's legitimate PC customers will be unable to play their games because of problems with the titles' digital rights management (DRM) antipiracy schemes.

A handful of Ubisoft games won't be playable while the transition takes place.
A handful of Ubisoft games won't be playable while the transition takes place.

The publisher has announced that it is "transitioning the hosting of many of its online services from a third-party data center to a new facility" starting on February 7, and as a result, most of its games will lose online functionality. However, because some of Ubisoft's PC and Mac games feature DRM that require a constant online connection to the publisher's servers, those games will be completely unplayable when the publisher takes those servers down for the transition. Ubisoft's uPlay service will also be down during the transition.

Ubisoft apologized for the downtime, saying, "This move ultimately will help us improve the maintenance of our infrastructure and deliver better uptime and greatly improved services for our customers."

Not all of the publisher's games will be impacted. It is keeping servers running for newer releases like Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Driver: San Francisco, and Just Dance 3. Full lists of the games that won't be impacted and the ones that will be rendered completely unplayable follow below.

Games that will be unplayable during transition
Assassin's Creed--Mac
Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2--PC
Might & Magic: Heroes VI--PC
Splinter Cell Conviction--Mac
The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom--PC
The Settlers--Mac

Games that will have online functionality throughout transition
Anno 2070
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Driver: San Francisco
Just Dance 3
The Settlers Online

@Valen_Ca Apparently, you don't hit up PC gaming sites and therefore have missed the extreme rage that Blizzard caused when they announced the lack of offline mode for Diablo 3. Plenty of people are pissed over the auction house too. You don't know what you're talking about.

To be fair, Ubisoft games are pretty unplayable by default... even without the shifting servers excuse. I kid, I kid... But seriously, f**k Ubisoft. What's the next Assassin's Creed going to be called? Assassin's Creed: Ezio's Trip To The Bakery? In an exciting and fresh way, Ezio loses all of the equipment from the last game, has to assassinate a whole bunch of unrelated people... just to buy a loaf of bread! Meanwhile, Desmond finds out he dropped his cell phone and doesn't even bother looking for it until Ezio finally buys that loaf of bread. Yeah, I'm pretty sick of that bulls**t by this point. Ubisoft's not getting any more of my business until they get their act together...

You want to know what pisses me off about PC gamers when it comes to this type of DRM, it's that they are seriously hypocritical about it. Ubisoft gets rightly punished for pulling crap like this but Activision/Blizzard gets highly rewarded for pulling the same crap.

As a general comment, if we don't remain consistent in the war on piracy, regular patrons of the Video Game industry will end up suffering more of this crap. I campaigned against SOPA and I'm doing the same against ACTA now in the EU but if I don't see a change in people's attitudes I'll change sides just as quickly. The hypocrisy has to stop. otherwise paying consumers are going to keep being punished because of the part of the market that engages in illegal activity. The law isn't just there to protect us just when it serves our interests. Instead of complaining about these things (inconvenient as they are), paying consumers should start campaigning for new ways to stamp piracy out of the market.

Are they actually transporting all of their server hardware? If not, they could just do a wireless data transfer to their new location and have minimal downtime during a server rollover.

@Muteki_X Well i didn't mean it like that but this is a really hard choice to make seriously. We have 2 choice 1 is to continue support Ubisoft with DRM game or not support them and risk having something much more worse in the future. I don't support DRM but it could become worse in the future if everyone think it's ok to pirate a game just because they don't like DMR. Until now everything compagnies tried to stop piracy only hurted honest customers and actually help piracy.

DRM once again proving the legitimate customer gets the worst part of the deal. Dear Customer, With less than 4 days notice we will be stopping you from playing your legally purchased game, and have no indication of when we may allow you to play it again. Thanks for being a loyal customer, and we hope you buy some more of our products so we can screw you in this way again in the future. Thoughtless Regards Ubisoft

@leeko_link: You should worry. The PC has traditionally been the testing grounds for any unpopular measure that they aim to spread to other platforms. As soon as PC gamers got used to DLC (after Oblivion's horse armour was widely derided), it quickly spread over to the consoles. When PC gamers were conditioned to accept account-bound serial keys, they started introducing online passes to consoles. And now that PC gamers have been getting very lax about DRM, it's a given that they will be introducing an online activation requirement on consoles in the near future.

@Soothsayer42 I know,I may personally dislike Steam, but I don't hate it or deny its importance and good sides in PC gaming. The good outweights the bad for most gamers, and I fully understand that. Its just that I can't stand to be forced to use mandatory third party app DRMs for games I bought at retail. If Steam was fully optional,I would love it,but it being mandatory makes it just another constrictive DRM for me,since I don't use DD...

I've said it before and say it again, DRM is only a problem for legal owners, it doesn't bother those who pirate the game, they just get a fix.. i wish the industry would see the light, and stop this DRM racket. If you make good games people will buy. people who get a pirated copy, never would have bought it in the first place.

I do so despise DRM. It's not until I'm on the airplane for 5 hours or my junk Mediacom Internet goes down for 10 hours that I realize just how lame online connections are to enforce copy protection. That said... if a game is great enough I'm not too proud to admit they will get my money anyway. I'm not going to spite myself out of entertainment and fun to make some sort of statement. It would however sway me on a title I'm on the fence about.

And this is why I absolutely HATE this form of DRM in principle. Still like it better than having to put a disc in every time I want to play a game, but absolutely despise the fact that someone else has control over whether or not I can play when I want to play. At least Steam has offlline mode for situations like this. Ubisoft, if they were smart, would have done it similiarly to Steam. Or, failing that, they should be smart enough to do the move such that servers in the new location are ready to go before turning off the old one. This approach they are using is just showing their customers they do not care at all.

I really hope Ubisoft realizes that everyone pirates their games with ease despite the DRM and with games like Anno 2070 no one even bothers to pirate it because of the DRM, thus creating no advertisement and no one bothering to buy it. Because thats what piracy is. Free advertisement.

If anything, this advocates piracy. Unfortunately, that will only increase piracy, which in turn will lead to tighter DRM. It'll keep cycling like this unless WE BOYCOTT EVERYTHING! RIGHT NOW! Except that doesn't work either, so the only solution is to avoid Ubisoft at all costs.

@dRuGGeRnaUt You have a very good question, and I have a very concise answer. Diablo III actually connects you to servers that do more than just siphon metadata and kick you off should your connection fail. While D3 servers certainly do this as well, they also validate acquired items, store your characters, and provide a secure environment that curbs, if not outright prevents, cheating to acquire character levels and items.

They're really not doing a very good job at fighting piracy, are they? The pirates aren't affected by any of this, while the paying customers won't be able to play their games. Way to go, Ubisoft *clap clap*

Just to ask, it's bad when Ubisoft makes their games require "always online" to even play singleplayer, but with diablo 3 its okay? many of you "anti-online-requiring" people i have seen defending diablos same feature. -- personally, i dont care which company makes a stupid decision, its still a stupid decision. At least you can get a crack if you want to play your game, thus proving again, the only people hurt by DRM are the people legally paying for the game.. I live in a place with crappy sporatic internet, and as such would not for a second consider buying a game with this type of "feature".

I think ubisoft wants PC gamers to hate them. And then they will simply stop making games for the PC and feel that they can justify their choice to themselves. If you look at Yves Guillemot it fits his attitude perfectly. You remember that one guy in highschool, who would act like an idiot and it seemed like no one could stand him. That guy would then get in trouble but as long as he could justify his actions to himself he would act like a smug POS and that he was always in the right. Of course that just irritated everyone even more. That's Yves Guillemot. Anyways, by pissing off pc gamers and not developing for that platform they can create games for consoles where standards are lower and they have more control.
