Ubisoft DRM games to be temporarily unplayable

Publisher's antipiracy scheme will prevent customers from playing some of its Mac and PC games for an undetermined period of time during server transition starting February 7.

Starting next week, a number of Ubisoft's legitimate PC customers will be unable to play their games because of problems with the titles' digital rights management (DRM) antipiracy schemes.

A handful of Ubisoft games won't be playable while the transition takes place.
A handful of Ubisoft games won't be playable while the transition takes place.

The publisher has announced that it is "transitioning the hosting of many of its online services from a third-party data center to a new facility" starting on February 7, and as a result, most of its games will lose online functionality. However, because some of Ubisoft's PC and Mac games feature DRM that require a constant online connection to the publisher's servers, those games will be completely unplayable when the publisher takes those servers down for the transition. Ubisoft's uPlay service will also be down during the transition.

Ubisoft apologized for the downtime, saying, "This move ultimately will help us improve the maintenance of our infrastructure and deliver better uptime and greatly improved services for our customers."

Not all of the publisher's games will be impacted. It is keeping servers running for newer releases like Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Driver: San Francisco, and Just Dance 3. Full lists of the games that won't be impacted and the ones that will be rendered completely unplayable follow below.

Games that will be unplayable during transition
Assassin's Creed--Mac
Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2--PC
Might & Magic: Heroes VI--PC
Splinter Cell Conviction--Mac
The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom--PC
The Settlers--Mac

Games that will have online functionality throughout transition
Anno 2070
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Driver: San Francisco
Just Dance 3
The Settlers Online

@XanderZane Consoles have DRM too in a form of services like XBL and PSN.Can't really play the MP without them, right? Also I would consider paying for on-line XBL thing just as bad as this always-online abomination on the PC...

all those companies who are pro-drm take note here. You insist having drm is great but in return the people who actually buy your games now will have an unplayable game. Even if the down time is just a day it is still a day that YOUR customers will not be able to use something they payed for. I'm getting sick of companies giving us gamers the shaft with the ol "Were sorry (but oh well)" excuse. In a time of economic hardships like we have today where games are a luxury item that we could just as easily not buy these companies should basically be doing everything in their power to thank the consumers for supporting them when money is tight. "We're sorry" just doesn't cut it for this gamer.

At the same time, pirates are laughing and enjoying their DRM free versions of the same game, while honest and loyal consumers are left in the dark... Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it? And then they are suprised why PC piracy rate is growing, when pirates win in everything, never having to deal with ANY form of DRM... @Soothsayer42 Steam is a DRM too,and for me often annoying one, since I can't stand being forced to run a mandatory third party app to play a game I bought at retail(I stay away from DD)...

they are stupid. people who steal will steal people who been buying games will continue to buy games even if there was no DRM. its a losing battle because the people who are buying the games with DRM are not getting there joy. if i move right now and i want to play Assassins Creed i wont be able too. or if im playing HAWX 2 and all of a sudden i lose internet connection, the game will pause and say something like. "Game will continue when internet connection is reestablish." and you can do anything, you cant even play the freaking single player game! make me want to not buy there games anymore and just download them DRM free. Ubi Soft you are just STUPID!

As long as my beloved Anno2070 works hehe. I own Might and Magic and Settlers also but I dont play those nearly as much as ANNO. If it helps the customers once the server issues are fixed I dont have a problem with it.

@Master_Happosai: You got THAT right, when people depend on an infrastructure to play a game they lose their freedom since they don't have sovereign ownership of it. I suspected that this DRM scheme was fishy.

This is exactly why DRM is a bad idea. You are punishing people who bought your game legally, yet all the people who pirated these games are able to still play them. What is the point?

I'm sure the pirates wont have any trouble playing their Ubisoft games during that time. My theory is that Ubisoft are really closet piracy advocates.

Ths is what I feared the most of this Online DRM scheme. Since it was announced I steer clear of PC versions of Ubisoft games because of this, and also from console versions because I long lost respect for this dev-publisher. The only thing I fear more than this is that gamers grow soft and indulgent over this disservices.

I love(d) a lot of ubi's games. Some are trash, but I, for the most part, really like(d) their games. However, it has been several years since I have played any of their games. I boycott anything with the Ubisoft stamp on it, pc or otherwise. I just really hate their model of safeguarding their precious lootz. It really only slows pirates down by about a half second and allows pirates to enjoy their games when the customer can't. It really deters only the people who don't pirate online. I'm all for protecting your assets and making sure you get credit for your time, but DRM isn't the way to go, it only hurts the customer.

Time to grab some offline-play cracks while you can. Well, the dozen or so who actually bought the games on PC. Pirates, you guys keep on playing, you don't have to worry about that silliness.

@steve216 thats why I didnt buy any of those games ************************************************************** Exactly. That's why I buy the game console versions. No DRM on game consoles. It's really stupid because if you don't have internet access, you can't play any of those games. If THQ went out of business, those games could never be played. DRM is very stupid. Then they wonder why thieves pirate their games. Stop making it impossible to play them.

It's like Ubisoft is intentionally trying to incur the wrath of the gaming population, or make everyone crack their games. "Oh, you hate our new DRM? That's simply not good enough. Let's make a game that has an install eaten up when you replace the video card. Maybe we should go all the way?! We're going to make it so your games flat-out won't work for awhile, unless of course, you pirated them. Then they'll work just fine!" This is insanity. No amount of reusing this DRM is going to make it acceptable. They seem to think if they keep doing it, eventually people won't mind, or something. I think if it did catch on with publishers, and they all started doing it, nobody would buy any of their games for PC anymore. Or could it be that they're trying to give France some sort of "no surrender" reputation? If that's the case, let's find a German publisher to demand Ubisoft drop their current DRM setup. History's on our side that this should work.
