Ubisoft DRM games to be temporarily unplayable

Publisher's antipiracy scheme will prevent customers from playing some of its Mac and PC games for an undetermined period of time during server transition starting February 7.

Starting next week, a number of Ubisoft's legitimate PC customers will be unable to play their games because of problems with the titles' digital rights management (DRM) antipiracy schemes.

A handful of Ubisoft games won't be playable while the transition takes place.
A handful of Ubisoft games won't be playable while the transition takes place.

The publisher has announced that it is "transitioning the hosting of many of its online services from a third-party data center to a new facility" starting on February 7, and as a result, most of its games will lose online functionality. However, because some of Ubisoft's PC and Mac games feature DRM that require a constant online connection to the publisher's servers, those games will be completely unplayable when the publisher takes those servers down for the transition. Ubisoft's uPlay service will also be down during the transition.

Ubisoft apologized for the downtime, saying, "This move ultimately will help us improve the maintenance of our infrastructure and deliver better uptime and greatly improved services for our customers."

Not all of the publisher's games will be impacted. It is keeping servers running for newer releases like Assassin's Creed: Revelations, Driver: San Francisco, and Just Dance 3. Full lists of the games that won't be impacted and the ones that will be rendered completely unplayable follow below.

Games that will be unplayable during transition
Assassin's Creed--Mac
Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2--PC
Might & Magic: Heroes VI--PC
Splinter Cell Conviction--Mac
The Settlers 7: Paths to a Kingdom--PC
The Settlers--Mac

Games that will have online functionality throughout transition
Anno 2070
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Driver: San Francisco
Just Dance 3
The Settlers Online

This is why DRM doesn't work, unless they 'unlock' the game, you are essentially renting it. So when the servers go down, or they get shut down - the game you have so-called purchased becomes nothing more than a coaster. And it is very easy to blame the pirates, in fact it has never been about piracy, it is about sales and piracy has never hurt sales, it have been proven by many legitimate sources. People don't realize that DRM has been out far longer then people realize, just look at how old SecuRom is for instance, then came StarForce with almost virus like DRM and lets not forget that the original secuROM ver.1 predates torrents and that is what really started the whole piracy arguments, even though you still had piracy long...long before torrents ever existed.

@billlabowski that's not a reason yo pirate ubisoft game... I'm sure if you was losing a few minutes with google search you could find a crack patch that would make the game free drm. At least this way you still support the compagnies and you can play your game anytime you want.

@SythisTaru Pirates crack the DRM, which leaves the legitimate consumers stuck with it. No, I'd say legitimate consumers have a strong reason to not like DRM.

Prime example of why I hate the whole concept of internet being a requirement to play a game you pay legit money for. Also why I have a running boycott on all Ubi games (even though I'm a console gamer who isn't direcly affected). It also encourages piracy, as it should. If you get shafted for trying to play a game the legal way, but can play it just fine by pirating it, then what's the motivation to do the right thing?

Bought Anno 2070 and guess what? Still haven't been able to play it because of their stupid DRM! Their launcher asked for my key so I gave it to them and it authenticated. But...it doesn't end there. The game itself also phones home to authenticate and for some reason it doesn't work on the machine I have the game installed on. Stupid. Thanks for punishing a legitimate customer.

THQ is going under folks. Times are tough. If you want to blame someone for DRM blame the pirates. Would not even have DRM if pirates did not exist.

Once again people who legitimately purchase games gets screwed by the company that makes them. If you own a game, you should be able to play it when you want how you want, period.

People who don't like DRM are supporters of piracy.

Yep... Customers pay for Ubisoft games (many of them with only single-player) and able to play them as long as Ubisoft isn't transferring anything.... They might as well rename their uPlay service to either "uWait" or "uSuffer." UNFORGIVABLE...

This will be bad for Ubisoft when trying to sell games with their "always connected" DRM in the future. However, I'm glad they took the full disclosure route and are giving customers a heads-up rather than just taking it offline. Also, there aren't that many games being affected so that's also good. Always connected DRM still sucks though.

See, the is why I HATE DRM! DOWN WITH DRM! They don't stop piracy with it, so there's no point in having it. It only gives their legit customers a hassle.
