Ubisoft Games Could Be Returning To Steam

Ubisoft has favored the Epic Games Store during the past few years.

It looks like Ubisoft's games could be coming back to the Steam platform after several years of being off of it. One such game could be Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

A Github user by the name of YoobieRe discovered that the source code for the Assassin's Creed Valhalla Ubisoft Connect page has been recently updated and now contains the word "Steam." Specifically, it reads, "Internal Dev/QC - Assassin's Creed Valhalla [STEAM]."

In a statement to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft said, "We don't comment on rumors and speculation."

If Ubisoft's games are returning to Valve's platform, it would be a big deal considering that Ubisoft has been favoring releasing its games on PC through the Epic Games Store as well as its own launcher. Ubisoft's last Steam release was Trials Rising back on February 26, 2019, nearly four years ago.

Interestingly, the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage is listed for a PC release, but it only has an Epic Games Store page and not a Steam one. It's possible that Ubisoft is continuing its relationship with Epic Games and Steam.

In GameSpot's Assassin's Creed Valhalla review, we said, "Despite its strong connection to past games, Assassin's Creed Valhalla is more than capable of standing on its own. It takes a little while to build momentum, but when it hits its stride, Valhalla is a confident Assassin's Creed title that takes a few narrative risks which, as a whole, pay off."

Unless this means the Steam version of Scott Pilgrim won't require an Ubisoft account or they're planning to do a GOG release, I'm going to have to pass.

I don't really want them back on Steam other than dunking on their Buggysoft Originals in the reviews.

I didn't even realize they'd left Steam until a couple weeks go when I say Far Cry 6 had a decent sale in some article and couldn't find it on the platform.

EGS exclusivity is a real good way to not sell your games. I swear the only reason the companies do it is they have no confidence in their own sales so they take the TenCent check instead.

@Xylymphydyte: Huh, the game sold better than any other game in the series.

@gargar: More platforms exist than PC. I can't find any platform specific numbers, and most of the articles I find on FC6's sales say it underperformed or merely "met expectations".

@Xylymphydyte: Sorry, I refered to AC:Vallhala sales. In any case, FC6 sold better than FC5 which is available on Steam. Whiners on IGN and GS aren't representing everyone.

@gargar: Should probably read articles before you link them, that says nothing about software moved, only that they sold more microtransactions both for Valhalla and FC6 as compared to the prior games, which tells us basically nothing. It also says their overall earnings were "in line with expectations". If they made major record breaking sales, or if they outsold previous games, they would say.

Many other articles talk about first week sales being substantially lower for both games than their predecessors and that their earnings for the quarter were worrying investors.

That article ALSO says they're not looking to sell but would entertain buyout offers, in other words, they're not doing very well and they might sell the company to help the stockholders/investors cash in.

Their stocks are down about 50% from where they were in just January of this year and they're at a QUARTER of what they were in January of last year.

They are not doing well.

@Xylymphydyte: Huh, do you really think they care where the money is coming from? people engage more in their game, hence, they earn more money.

And fact remains, AC Valhalla sold better than any other game in the series without Steam.

So relax. Steam ain't mandatory. They do it to increase sale even more, why do they bring their games to Gamepass you think?

@gargar: Nowhere does it say it outsold the previous game. The implication of your article is quite the opposite.

The fact that they're looking at going back to steam ALSO suggests the opposite that leaving it aside was a massive mistake, and their stock prices bear that out.

The company has lost 75% of its value since they tried to get away from Steam, they did something awful wrong and that was the only major change.

To paraphrase what you said before, fanboys on GS and IGN aren't representing reality.

@Xylymphydyte: you know you can use Google, right?

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2022/10/assassins-creed-valhalla-reaches-an-impressive-20-million-players

Also, the game generated more than 1 Billion euros. All this without Steam.

@gargar:

"But of course, it does help that Valhalla has been made available through subscription services like PS Plus — 20 million players certainly doesn't equate to 20 million copies sold."

@gargar: Money from ps+ subs is not the same moneys as game sold

Also making potentially more money on consoles helps cover pc losses. There is no doubt they didn't sell as much on pc by their exclusivity moves. Ubi users on their launcher are tiny in numbers. Users on Epic spend 3$ a year in average outside of fortnite.

They are coming back to steam because 88% monies of few dozen of thousands to a hundred or two thousands of copies, and 100% of the same amount isn't as good as 70% of millions.

This is the same stupidity as brexit. You don't make more money by shutting your access to your biggest market.

@Slash_out: stupidity by GS readers keeps breaking records.

https://www.pcgamesn.com/assassins-creed-valhalla/sales

PC version was the best selling UBI game ever on PC despite not being available on Steam.

Try to understand, in the REAL world most gamers care none for the platform which said game is on. The reason that Ubi and other publishers put their games after some time on Steam, gamepass or PS+ is simply because they first want to exhaust their sales on platforms that net them the most income I.E. ubisoft own platform and Epic and only after that move to other platforms.

@gargar: Should I give you back your first comment? :p

First they (Ubi in their press release) don't even mention epic, clearly epic sales were crappy.

Secondly Valhalla "sold" more than any previous game in it's first week, but made 62% less money.

Why? Because the copies sold include "uplay+"

So let me educate you.

People in the real world care about the launcher. That's why people care if a game is released on their console or on their launcher. Because that's the one they use, because there are security issues, because there are features they use, because their friends are on that launcher, because they can consolidate their librairy in one place, because of the ease of use and thousands of other reasons.

Secondly Ubisoft did put their game on a subscription program like Gamepass and PS+, their own, and the game despite being a top seller (because of activations from that sub) did more than half worse in benefits.

Thirdly you can't compare a store, Steam, to a subscription offer.

Fourthly Steam is the biggest market in the world for pc and the one that generates the most revenues. 70% on steam is better than 100% on Ubi's store + 88% on Epic + no sales from uplay+. They most likely understand that they are missing out on a lot. Had they released on steam, the sales would have been much lower on other platforms but they would have made much more money overall.

not releasing Games on STEAM is a shame. unfair to favor Epic. esp given UbiS benefited from Steam in the past. Steam is also the best PC client by Far. and prob the most pop as well. So, let UbiS Games be back to Steam.

I hope it's true because I'd like to play their newer games but I refuse to use Epic or Uplay so if they want me to buy FC6 and Valhalla then it would be a good decision.

I have no interest in a half dozen different game launchers. I use Steam and Game Pass. No Steam, no sale. So we'll see.

Either that or they cut their subscription to less than $10/ month, but Ubisoft games aren't worth $180/ yr.

Modern Ubisoft games are generally garbage.

But Epic deserves to lose every studio after they decided to deal with the devil.

Yves the dwarf realized that Selling to Epic was a failure after all. Welcome back you greedy.....ughm.

Glad the Epic BS came and went silent, everyone knows it is a Shitty Launcher and cant even compete with steam let alone beat it.

Swiney played himself by making losses on Exclusive deals. Serves Epic right.
