Ubisoft Shutting Down Servers For Some Classic Games, Including Rainbow Six Vegas

Assassin's Creed II, Splinter Cell Conviction, and other classic Ubisoft games will no longer have multiplayer servers from June.

Ubisoft will be shutting down the servers on several of its older games, including Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas, Assassin's Creed II, Far Cry 2, and more. The majority of the affected titles are PC games, with several PS2, Xbox 360, and PSP games also being shut down at an undetermined time later in 2021.

Ubisoft explained in a blog post that while multiplayer online services for these games will be switched off, players can still access solo features. In Splinter Cell Conviction's case, the game featured competitive and cooperative multiplayer modes, though the cooperative option could also be played locally.

If the game is Ubisoft Connect-enabled, then this service will no longer be available for the title on consoles and the microtransaction currency of Ubisoft Units will be disabled. Ubisoft added that there will be no refunds on unused in-game currencies. Rewards will also be disabled in-game, and even though they can still be unlocked, Ubisoft says that players will no longer receive them.

  • Assassin's Creed 2 (PC)
  • Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands (PC)
  • Far Cry 2 (PC)
  • Anno 1404 (PC)
  • Might & Magic – Clash of Heroes (PC)
  • Splinter Cell Conviction (PC)
  • The Settlers 7 (PC)
  • Might & Magic X – Legacy (PC)

Ubisoft multiplayer server shut down list for 2021

  • Ghost Recon Future Soldier – 2021 (PC / Xbox 360/ PS3)
  • Rainbow Six Lockdown – 2021 – (PC / PS2 / Xbox)
  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2 – 2021 (PC / Xbox 360 / PS3 / Xbox One)
  • Rainbow Six Vegas – 2021 (PC / X360 / PS3 / PSP)

Ubisoft said that the reason why it was shutting down services for some of its older games that only have a small audience is that it's a "necessary" step to allow its IT and service staff to "better focus on delivering great online experiences to the vast majority of customers who are playing newer, more popular titles."

In a similar move, Sony also announced that it would be shutting down the digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3 and PSP in July, with the PS Vita store being permanently closed as well later in August. Sony has also already and silently killed off the old web store that let PlayStation players buy PS3, PSP, and PS Vita digital games.

Wow, I didn't even know they were still running 1st party servers for some of these games. I mean Vegas? I probably would have been playing that for many years up until now if I'd know official servers were still going and there was a playerbase. May just re-install it anyway for the last bit.

Now we are stuck with only few slim that I feel can take up the mantle. Ground Branch (Still early though) and Zero Hour are the last two that really feel like a good modern successor to the franchise.

I still play Vegas 2 to this day. Awesome game. Sad the servers are being shut down. There's still quite a large community of online players.

damn I remember Rainbow Six Vegas 2 still had a ton of players some years ago on the 360. This was years after its release. I'll have to fire it up and see what its player base is like now and play it one last time. Have some fond memories with that game.

Can't you simply create your own private server and play with guests of your choosing? Or do these games do not have that kind of option?

All these companies should really invest in P2P server clients that can be installed by gamers after the main servers are shut down. They make enough money and it would help preserve older games.

@lion2447: They either don’t care or don’t want to remind people how much better games used to be (or both)

Naw it really is just so they can move forward with monetization titles instead. These games are from an era that wasn't related to such or at least in such an extreme degree now.

As much as I disliked Rainbow Six Lockdown (Rainbow Six 3 is my favorite game of all time), I have a lot of memories playing lockdown online. Never would of thought the servers were still up for that. Would love to play all them OG Xbox games online for like a week or so a year.

Knowing how god-awful Ubisoft's servers are.

All I can imagine is someone picking up a hamster off of a wheel connected to a potato, hooked up to a stack of 12 floppy disk players that use vinyl record-sized floppy disks. Cooled by a black's bellow.

When it comes to shutting down their servers.

As long as the single player experience is left in tact this is fine.

Do you mean Brotherhood or Revelations? Assassin's Creed 2 didn't have multiplayer.

@eggman1000: What will be affected for AC 2 are the rewards that you get online from Ubisoft's servers like the Altair outfit, Uplay exclusive Auditore Family Crypt(Sequence 5), and additional throwing knives(Sequence 4).

"Rewards will be disabled in-game, meaning that you can still unlock them, but you will not receive them. If you unlock them after the closure of the online service for the game, please feel free to contact our Customer Support team to be refunded."

The other AC games are not affected yet at the moment. AC 2 PC is one of the oldest games added to the Uplay(now called Ubisoft Connect) client server library that still had server support.

@Heartagram_03: yeah it was honestly the best co-op game hands down. I played that so much and even recorded 3 videos of it. It's a shame would've liked to record more.

Yeah but I don't like Siege that much Ubisoft and AssCreed has long since been over after the 3rd game. So this "better focus on delivering great online experiences to the vast majority of customers who are playing newer, more popular titles." is just an excuse to push MTX and Denuvo moving forward. Plus what is popular doesn't make it that good.

Poor excuse to just shut these fun games down instead of giving back to the community, handing out the source code so we can host the game ourselves.... oh well.
