Ubisoft Stock Sinks To 10-Year Low As Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms

Ubisoft's share price has dropped more than 10% since late August due primarily to the perceived underperformance of Star Wars Outlaws.

Star Wars Outlaws is the first open-world Star Wars game ever, but it seems that this galactic low-life adventure isn't quite living up to sales expectations. Ubisoft's share price has fallen 12.6% since Outlaws released on August 27, and it now sits at the lowest level since 2015.

Ubisoft's sales target for Star Wars Outlaws is unclear--the company didn't announce a public number--but the market results indicate that it's not a hit. Per Reuters, JP Morgan analyst Daniel Kerven said that the game has "struggled to meet sales expectations despite positive critical reviews." The analyst lowered his sales expectations for the game from 7.5 million to 5.5 million through March 2025, noting that Outlaws' budget was at least 30% higher than last year's Assassin's Creed Mirage.

Now Playing: Star Wars Outlaws Review

Outlaws isn't the only game weighing on Ubisoft's stock price. Initial interest in the company's free-to-play online shooter XDefiant has cooled off in recent months, which contributed to the slide. Ubisoft's next major release will come on November 15 with Assassin's Creed Shadows, the feudal-Japan-themed entry that fans have been asking for for years.

In GameSpot's Star Wars Outlaws review, critic Jordan Ramée praised the game's scale and basic mechanics, while finding fault with its overall story and exploration elements. "There are so many little moments in Outlaws that I love," he wrote. "However, the unexciting space combat and unrewarding syndicate-relationship tracker don't add anything meaningful to the experience. And neither does Kay, who feels like a protagonist without a meaty narrative arc. The game has some successes when it comes to gunslinging or sneaking--both of which are aided by a superb soundtrack and incredible sound design--but Outlaws does too much of what it does poorly, and too little of what it does well."

When is the next quarterly report for Ubi soft out? It should maybe reveal some sales numbers for the game.

Or just sales numbers for the entire company (revenue).

I think they release the report in october? So Assassin s Creed does not affect the october report. But then, there is a january report as well.

Also interesting how other quite new ubi soft games have sold, like Skull & Bones and Prince of Persia games.

On the other hand: Black Myth: Wukong Has Now Sold 18 Million Copies! Developers should know by now what the true gamers want! But I'm surprised that Gamespot closed the comments for that article!!!

Ubisoft has become like MC Donalds. A fast food restaurant. You know it's junk and tastes all the same, but you still crave it to beat the hunger.

Shadows gonna flop too. I am dead serious.

We are also seeing a shift in the culture wars.

Acolyte
Snow White
Dustborn
Concord
Outlaws
Rings of Power

etc etc.

People are tired and it shows.

Because most gamers today are morons. The game isnt great but it’s good and still lots of fun. Ive played 25 hours and enjoyed everything except the stupid speeder crashing on the smallest things. Most of the young gamers today are morons who complain about everything. Older gamers like me (over 40) know its still a fun game and doesnt deserve the hate its received from the community. Younger gamers for the most part these days are toxic and whine about any and everything. I have had way more fun with outlaws than i did with wukong even tho i enjoyed wukong. This brought me more enjoyment so far

@joshn80: So you're over 40, but you're still so childish that you call people who disagree with you morons. If you're enjoying Star Wars Outlaws, great. I hope you have a blast. But when a franchise as massive as Star Wars is failing to grasp an audience, that should tell you that they did something seriously wrong. Developers who blame gamers for their game flopping are the toxic ones. People have a right to vote with their wallets and support or ignore any developer they want for any reason. It doesn't make them "morons who complain about everything". Grow up, dude.

Star Wars Outlaws is the first open-world Star Wars game ever? what? is KOTOR and old republic a joke to you? what about jedi fallen order? ayy lmao

well ubishit is another failed company who has no idea what kind of industry they are in. it's smart idea to bail out this titanic before it's too late. they should come up with something new than assassins's creed and far cry formula to survive the jungle of video game industry where each day a new predator emerges from shadows as even 1 indie game developed by 1 person steals the thunder of games that has 8 years old development with 300+ people by wasting $100 billions :DDD

after game prices increased the quality and quantity shouldn't decrease because when it does people will digitally burn you at digital stakes for gamer heresy lol

@dushness: Partly, I think, it's that Cyberpunk was the next big game from the makers for The Witcher 3, while Outlaws is the next big game from a publisher that hasn't had a great rep for a while. Star Wars also hasn't had a great rep for a couple decades.

Gamers generated loads of hype for Cyberpunk in the run up to its launch but have been mostly cynical about Outlaws (and any big Ubisoft game) pretty much since first hearing about it.

@dushness: Did you really seriously ask that question that has a simple answer? :DDD

CyberJunk 2077 benefits a lot from being a cyberpunk genre game that's very rare to see, on top of it it's a video game adaptation of the famous Cyberpunk table-top RPG + it's like FPS GTA which such a game would be loved a lot for how such games are rare too. Another important factor is gender selection and character creation. At first the game was attractive for it's a video game of the Witcher 3 developers, lastly it was attractive because it's the game version of the anime so new generations kids liked to play a game that has anime for being able to see stuff from anime in the game was "interesting" for them.

So why did Star Wars Outlaws obviously failed? Forced woman character to play as + you basically forced to use one gun that's a mere laser pistol, one hoverbike and one ship. Customization only consists of changing mostly the same but different color outfits. This does mean the game cannot relate to most players possible as it limits players to people who are ok to play as a woman who look like that and ok with such weapon and vehicle preference. Because of lack of options cannot really compare these both games at all. A fail in design of Star Wars Outlaws is wasting potential of an open world Star Wars game by not giving what people want. The game is really actually like ordinary action game that works more like Metal Gear Solid V which such a gameplay wasn't fitting for Star Wars Outlaws at all but they used this "open world" aspect to make a sell and they failed miserably to make its open world actually matters. Same lack of vision of how Bethesda advertized Starfield with tons of planets to "explore" like only open world itself what makes the game good lol. Despite the "open world attraction" Star Wars Outlaws way more lifeless than Metal Gear Solid V as the game competes with No Man's Sky's lifeless infinite universes make you question why this game even has open world map design if it will be so empty and basically useless lol.

However Star Wars Outlaws technically works worst than worst version of CyberJunk 2077. I basically played first version of CyberJunk 2077 and sucked it dry 100% that it was sometimes raining cars or your car was launching at the moon but at least there was no game killer bug or anything that actually make you cannot enjoy the game itself. In contrast Star Wars Outlaws has way more bugs and glitches that prevent you from playing the game way more than all Bethesda games and CyberJunk 2077 combined which should be Guinness World Records on the most buggy AAA game ever or something lol. In the game anything you do have a great chance to make some nonsense bug to occur. Even Starfield bugs are nothing compared to Star Wars Outlaws bugs.

One of the prime refunds and cancelling Ubisoft+ subscription reason is just because players has to start a new game when they having bugs in Star Wars Outlaws. Also they say story basically doesn't exist as it's filled with excuse to do something as people are not sure what happens and why it happens. Another aspect is it's actually a stealth game without actually allowing players to play in stealth. Imagine releasing a Metal Gear Solid game without ability to hide. AI is bad and they butcher gameplay on top of it by seeing you behind walls or something failing the mission. Not to mention the game has no ability to save anytime and load the moment you saved the game so since stealth is forced and bad AI and stealth gameplay make people fail people losing hours of progress that includes whatever you collected which is very much like how games were like before Playstation 3-era. For example now I'm playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider, whatever I collect and do separately saved and I can save anytime and load the moment I saved. This shouldn't be hard to implement into Star Wars Outlaws. Not to mention even the first Tomb Raider series reboot game has way better graphics than Star Wars Outlaws that make me question if the game actually use your system for bitcoin mining lol.

In short, the only issue of CyberJunk 2077 was the game was advertised wrongly as it still doesn't have tons of features said the game would have on the release day as they cancelled lots of features, DLCs and game modes. Besides that technical issues were way below of what we expect from every Bethesda game released, especially the games developed on Gamebryo. Otherwise gameplay itself is proper and it has what it should have for players to able to play the game from start to the end.

If you are familiar with emulator gaming, emulators have a list of which games are "playable" from start to the end and they also list which games are "unplayable" for cannot finish the game, so CyberJunk 2077 was always a "playable" game despite how junky it was while Star Wars Outlaws is still "unplayable" mess for randomly you may have to start all over which is main reason why its metacritic score is around 4 right now but there are lots of aforementioned reasons for why it's way way worse game than CyberJunk 2077. The average Star Wars Outlaws gamers just enjoy visuals of planets they explore and/or hunting meme bugs and glitches for lols as these two what the game offers while CyberJunk 2077 offered way more.

@dushness: Cyberpunk 2077 had been in development for so long the hype, trailers, etc. generated 8 million preorders. The game breaking bugs weren't widely known until after launch. The hype train wasn't nearly as big to begin with, then Outlaws had some missteps that may have cost it some preorder sales, in particular the Jabba the Hut mission dust up.

Lastly, investors being unhappy with sales is just in proportion to expectations. For example, according to a report in Nintendo Life, at launch, Outlaws was the top selling game in the UK (physical copies only.) It did 15% better than Ubisoft Massive's last game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. However, launch sales in the UK were 55% lower than Jedi: Survivor. That (and the fact the game needs to sell more to compensate for its bigger budget) is what investors aren't happy about.

@dushness: Few reasons.

1. Ubisoft games are pretty much by the books. You pick up any of them and 90-95% of the game will play the same as Assassin's creed.

2. No matter what side you're on, Love it or hate it. Disney is doing damage to Star Wars to the point where the name alone has no value.

I used to really wish for Beyond Good and Evil 2, but at this point I fear that Ubisoft would just royally eff it up.
