Ubisoft "Surprised" By Lackluster Sales Of Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope

As part of a negative financial forecast, Ubisoft stated it had higher expectations for the Mario + Rabbids sequel.

Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope received positive reviews from players and critics alike, but that apparently didn't translate to success on the charts. In a recent statement expressing disappointing holiday results, Ubisoft specifically called out Sparks of Hope and Just Dance 2023 as two titles that did not meet expected sales targets.

Given that the Mario + Rabbids sequel was rated one of the best Switch games of 2022, this lack of success is indeed surprising. However, the game did come out just before heavy hitters like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and God of War: Ragnarok, so it's likely that that had an impact.

Now Playing: Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope - Game Overview Trailer

As part of that announcement, Ubisoft said that it has canceled three unannounced games as part of an industry-wide shift towards "mega-brands and long-lasting titles." CEO Yves Guillemot explained that this trend is due in part to a contraction in overall consumer spending, which left customers with less money to spend on "other launches." He also said that the game has gotten excellent ratings from the community, and that Ubisoft expects the game to do good numbers over time.

In that same update, Ubisoft delayed the beleaguered pirate game Skull and Bones yet again. Originally intended as an expansion to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, the game has been under development since 2013.

I couldn't even finish the first one. Wasn't bad, but I got burnt out. Then they released a second one on the same console. I was like, I'm good mate.

Make a new Rayman game.

God of War Ragnarok has the most nominations at the 2023 DICE Awards, with a total of 12. Horizon Forbidden West has eight, followed by Elden Ring with seven. In addition to those three, Stray and Vampire Survivors are contenders for Game of the Year.

LOL,

mario + rabbits is a niche game, so even if it is good, it won't do incredible sales

as for just dance, well just dance on switch shouldn't exist, just moving 1 hand, seriously that has NOTHING to do with dance, that game should have died with kinect

it is time for ubisoft to release the games the promised us 10 years ago (where is beyond good and evil 2?)

People are probably waiting for the game to drop in price. Ubisoft themselves set up the expectation that their games are frequently discounted, and Kingdom Battle itself often goes on sale for less than $20.

Why buy the game now and pay $60, when it will be discounted to half price (or less) in less than six months? In fact, the game is currently discounted to $40 at a number of retailers.

Too bad. Enjoyed the first one and am looking forward to picking this one up, but Ubi has nobody to blame but themselves. Whoever thought this series had the chops to launch against CoD, Pokemon and GoW better update their LinkedIn page.

It's almost like having a reputation for producing crappy games is catching up to them or something.

@s1taz4a3l: I don't think this argument holds much weight anymore. It's only a real concern for little children. Actual adults, of which a great many gamers are, have no trouble buying more than one game at a time. The presence of another game close to release doesn't suddenly make someone incapable of buying both.

@Barighm: Disagree in this case. I'm an adult who buys way more games than I have time to play, and even I haven't picked this one up yet. Still working through Xenoblade 3, and in that window I bought Bayonetta 3, Pokemon Scarlet, Ragnarok, Crisis Core, Plague Tale, LoU remake, Tactics Ogre, and Callisto Protocol, just off the top of my head. It got buried.

Mixed that with unrealistic expectations due to Kingdom Battle releasing during the Switch launch window when people were starving for titles, plus competition from Midnight Suns in a historically niche genre, and you've got yourself a recipe for disaster.

@aaronlav: Erm...you disagree, but proved my point by stating you buy more, key word, than you have time to play.

@Barighm: To jump in on this, I agree that we can buy more games but I think often times many of us just don't want to. If three games are coming out around the same same and one of them (let's say Mario vs rabbids) is at the bottom for priorities, we may just pass over it. Then even forget about it as time passes. Even more so on a console we may not play often.

After typing this comment I just remembered that I wanted to play bayonetta 3 and xenoblade 3. But at this point I'm just sorta meh on it. I suppose the question is are there enough people like me out there to sway the sales of a game in a significant way.

@noodles227: some people who normally buys a lot of games might have to spend less money on games now and more money on other stuff like food or gas or electricity or other things. Or increased interest rates.

They might still buy the game they think is most hot or they have most highly anticipated. Like Pokemon or Call of duty modern warfare II. But they might not buy a second game the same month. They might limit their spending to just one game each month.

And i guess many parents might buy mario games for their kids and parents might have increased living costs (food, gas, electricity, higher interest rates)

So it could be a combination of things. People might tend to be more picky and selective when their gaming budget decreases.

Or more likely to wait for a sale.

Game sounds cool, but taking out multiplayer sapped my interest a bit. Also, other than Pokemon, direct sequels released on the same Nintendo console generally sell quite a bit less than the first.

@simonthekid7: It will sell a lot, but unless it gets remasted for Switch 2, it will probably sell quite a bit less than BotW.

There’s nothing to be surprised about. It’s an Xcom-style tactics game. It was never going to sell well. I love these games, but most people aren’t into tactics. Even the people I know who bought the first one don’t want this one, because they didn’t actually like the gameplay. They just bought it, because of the weird concept. Now that the novelty has worn off for them, they have no interest in this one. I’d imagine that’s the case for a lot of people.

@dominicwow: Haha. I have a feeling that was the majority of people. I enjoy these games, but they have pretty limited appeal, regardless of how good they actually are. That’s why the first one has been on sale for $15 almost every other week, since a couple months after it came out. Switch games do not go on sale like that.

Games for Nintendo consoles only sell if they are made by Nintendo. It is common knowledge and even a game made by a 3rd party with Nintendo characters in it doesn't sell. Yes, the first game did well.......and the sequel was always going to fail. PS- I bought both and have barely played the new one yet.

It sucks to hear. I don't currently have a Switch, and I wouldn't buy one just for this, but if this had been released on PS, I would have supported it. I really liked the first one.

Surprising, given that Nintendo owners seemingly buy any and everything Nintendo craps out, regardless of quality. And framerate.

Rabbids, as a concept, are not something too appealing to me. They are the Minions of video games, and I find them annoying.
