Ubisoft Won't Stop PC Players From Running The Crew at 60fps

The game's developer is working to ensure the full game doesn't include the 30fps cap seen in the closed beta.

Provided you've got the necessary hardware to make it happen, you'll be able to play The Crew at 60 frames per second on PC.

Given how averse the PC community is to any kind of artificial restrictions on how games can run, this comes as very good news. The game's closed beta imposed a 30fps limit that players were able to circumvent. Fortunately, barring any issues, you won't have to jump through any hoops to play the game at a higher frame rate in the full game.

Speaking with TechRadar, The Crew lead designer Serkan Hassan said the game's developer is working to ensure PC players can run the game at 60fps. "Ultimately the performance and the frame rate will be down to the players hardware," he said. "A few people in the closed beta found ways of unlocking the frame rate. My understanding at this moment is that we'll be allowing players to do that come the full version as well, unless some other issue comes to light which would block that in any way."

This gives the open-world racing game a leg up on the console versions; on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4, The Crew runs at 30fps. That's the same frame rate that Forza Horizon 2 and Driveclub, the respective console's big exclusive racing games this fall, run at.

The Crew was recently delayed, pushing its release date from November 11 to December 2 on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Xbox 360 (but not PS3 or Wii U).

MS,Sony Force devs to lock PC versions to 30 FPS and lower Graphics because they don't want games to look better on PC, Watchdogs got Downgarde graphics because of that, Dead Rising 3 got Locked on 30 fps also, Now AC U is locked on 30 FPS on PC also, Next one will be FC4.

<< LINK REMOVED >> PCs already won last gen when Japan failed to make the leap to HD and the West took over. Western developers are all PC based, most games we saw last gen made the jump from PC to consoles... for better or for worse. Now the new consoles are exactly the same architecture as the PC, in fact if they allowed you to, you could easily install Windows and run Steam and play all PC games with the right drivers.

Now we're seeing Japanese developers making the leap finally too and as a result more and more Japanese games are coming out on Steam. The only real developer who wants to stay in the past is Nintendo, they can do whatever they want though because they're awesome.

chris, we're talking PC here.. so why is this article labeling this "unlocking the 30 fps limit" as = 60 fps?

you know pc is capable of more than 60 fps too, right?

It sounds absurd at first, but if Ubisoft was really pressured by Microsoft and Sony to restrict frame rates to 30 fps so console gamers don't have to cry, then Ubisoft does deserve some respect for this decision.

The Crew actually has a lot of potential for success as no NFS game is coming this year. Most NFS fanboys will buy The Crew to make up for it. To be honest though, it will probably be better than the last few NFS games that came out. \

P.S. DriveClub sucks!

Hopefully they fix the car handling in the game. Frame rate and graphics don't mean anything if the game plays like crap.

Saw that customization trailer for the first time, looks impressive, playing it on 60fps must be awesome. Congrats to PC gamers, I'll have to do with 30fps on my PS4 sadly.

"Unlocked" doesn't mean 60 FPS, it means "unlocked." PC gamers don't want a 60 FPS cap. No PC game should be capped, because there will always be hardware that can exceed that cap.

Is this a 60 FPS cap or not?

only game i know you would want to cap fps is games that tie their game's physics to the framerate (like skyrim).

I should hope so, Forza Horizon 2 looks smoother than The Crew PC beta did.

Not sure I'm interested in The Crew anymore though, Forza Horizon 2 seems to have that perfect mix of arcade and realism which = maximum fun. The Crew was good, but seemed a bit shabby in comparison now, the size of the map may be a little ambitious for it's technical capabilities.

What could in any way BLOCK the abillity to run a game at 60fps except bad design?

<< LINK REMOVED >> bad/lazy design is right. "When setting out to develop a new game, making the decision to support variable framerates does not impose much effort. However, porting an existing game may present difficulties: in some old games animations or even game logic may be frame-locked, and even in modern games some physics simulations might break with time step lengths which differ greatly from what they were tested and developed with". << LINK REMOVED >>

<< LINK REMOVED >> 60fps caused the vehicle positioning in non-prerendred cutscenes to be all wonky. Other than that, the actual gameplay at 60fps was much better. I just hope they fix the cutscenes. Sounds like they still won't be putting the 60fps in the in-game options, only in the cfg file, so they might not bother fixing it.

On the other hand - did you ever saw pc game cutscenes in 60fps? WHAT.A.MESS.

I mean, there's nothing special about the game from what I can tell.

As long as they continue to support the game and add in features that are needed for quality of life then I am ok with that. Ubisoft has been good about adding in features that players want to see after release, they did with Farcry 3 and Watch Dogs so I don't have any reason to think they won't do the same with The Crew.
