UK gov't considers game dev tax breaks

Statement assures the games industry that it is taken seriously; government is "mindful" of the fact that a tax credit scheme has just been approved in France.

When Canada replaced the UK as the third-biggest producer of games last year, it seemed obvious that the country's wooing of the fledgling industry by providing lucrative tax breaks was working. The picture doesn't look so rosy this side of the pond, however. The UK has seen the number of independent studios shrink from about 400 in 2001 to around 150 today, according to figures from Tiga, the trade association for UK developers.

The director general of the European Leisure Software Publisher's Association, Paul Jackson, agreed. He told the press recently, "The Canadians have driven a tank over the French Citroen and have now parked on our lawn. It is becoming very challenging to keep core development studios here." Earlier this month, French prime minister Francois Fillon announced that a similar scheme was soon to be operational in France.

The UK government has now released an official statement on the issue in a bid to reassure those who work in the industry that it takes them seriously. It concludes, "The government must be mindful of the need to ensure fair competition and value for money for tax payers whilst ensuring that any tax incentives are supported by evidence. The government is conscious of the recent approval of a cultural tax relief for games in France and is working with the UK industry to collect and review the evidence for introducing such a credit in the UK."

The statement came in response to a petition posted on the 10 Downing Street Web site for tax credits to be given to UK game developers. It pointed out that with costs to produce games in Canada being up to 40 percent cheaper, many gamemakers have been enticed to set up shop over there instead. It argued, "We need the same to support UK talent in this industry that is expected to grow phenomenally in the next three years, but with rising costs in development more staff are required and it is increasingly less attractive to fund these larger projects here, and almost impossible for independent studios to start production."

The petition received 2,175 signatures before the deadline of May 3.

I think the Department for Trade and Industry should go ahead with it. It takes a lot of guts to start a development company, so the least the government can do is offer them tax incentives. I also think maybe some organisation should offer grants to companies looking to get off the ground.

That would be great. If they got a tax cut, that could bring more devs back into the US, since so many have moved to places like Canada and Europe, and it would also mostly likely benefit the economy as well. God knows we need that.

Why does everybody say that this is good news? Are game development companies somehow so much more valuable than grocery stores, construction companies, and other businesses that it becomes fitting for them to get special government treatment? More likely these kind of things come from government officials getting stock in or cutting deals with game devs. Universal tax cut = good; Tax cut designed to give special treatment to certain groups = bad;

This is only good news for everybody! With these types of incentives 'possibly' other countries might follow. Why not? With the market right now and the gaming industry being profitable why not support something that helps out the overall economy.

wow, and it it seemed like just yesterday that somebody had proposed a sales tax ON video games to get kids to stop playing them. At least the UK and Canada know what they're doing.

Too little too late. Also, how about some tax breaks for those aged 19-25 with jobs who are unable to afford the stupid council tax?? Huh?? Instead of giving all the money to people who cant stop having babies.

It's about time. Thanks to the Canadian government, studios in Canada are the top in the world and the best of the best because of similar tax brakes.

Hopefully the US introduces something like this, I mean they do this stuff for the movies so why not games. It is a billion dollar business, it only makes since.

Hurray for tax breaks! Mine should be coming in the mail shortly. ^_^ And I hope UK studios get them as well (in a different form, obviously). Some good stuff has come out of the UK studios like Codemasters and Lionhead and Bizarre Creations!

How about...they give the rest of us a tax break too?! Still, this is great news. I can't wait to see what our homegrown talent comes up with.

finally, the government is taking action on the subject of gaming. i welcome this. more and more people are being put off becoming game devs here and are jetting off to places like America and Canada. we are killing off a major investment so its good to see the government taking notice (even if their only reason is the money, its still a reason).

First post! (joking) This does seem like a good idea. Game developing costs keep rising and it's becoming harder and harder for indie devs to make a profit. Taxes are higher in the UK after all.
