UK Politicians Call For Legislation On Console Scalping

Six British MPs have expressed interest in legislation that would prevent resellers from cashing in on console shortages.

Over the past months, console resellers have made a fortune due to the ongoing PS5 and Xbox Series X / Series S shortages caused in part due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Now, according to VGC, six lawmakers in the UK are calling for legislation that would prohibit the sale of gaming consoles and computer components at prices that are "greatly above" the MSRP.

Six MPs from the Scottish National Party tabled a motion to call for this move, meaning that it's very much early days for any possible legislation. The motion also says that the resale of goods purchased using automated bots should be made illegal. The MPs compare this potential legislation to already-introduced bills that control the activity of ticket resellers, who must divulge their identity and the exact details of the seat being sold.

Now Playing: 9 Hidden PS5 Features

Though it's difficult to know how many PS5s and Xboxes have been resold this holiday season, every indication points towards a large volume. An analysis from a data engineer concluded that scalpers made $82 million in sales and $39 million in profit since September from next-gen consoles and high-end computer components, with services like eBay and PayPal taking a cut of around $6.6 million and $2.4 million, respectively. However, the analysis only included US listings, and did not take into account other marketplace sites like Facebook, meaning that the true market is much larger.

We are in the middle of full-scale, global insanity and people are begging their politicians and governments to secure their right to buy a PS5 at retail...

What a joke! Let we stop people from selling a product at higher price. And for those who have something to say back to me please let’s have a civil discussion.

Again politicians have to step in to protect the unconscious masses from themselves. If only they'd put some effort for once into educating people on how to use their brain and money wisely. Then schemes like this wouldn't even exist.

Even though I didn't manage to get a PS5 at launch, I fail to see how this should be a government issue. As long as people are willing to pay double or triple the normal price, then that is their business. The only way to get rid of scalpers is to not buy a scalped machine. Easy.

@toffifee: Well, the reason why politicians always have to step in in such cases is because it affects everyone. The tyranny of the masses, where the dumb, impatient who have never learned how to handle money will **** things up for everyone else. Sadly governments have never decided to take the proper approach and try to educate those people. All politicians ever come up with is "ban everything". Which only leads folks like those scalpers to move on to the next scheme and the cycle repeats all over again.

@Atzenkiller: There are many many rich people on this earth that really don't care paying 500$ extra for the new console if they can get it earlier

@Keaze_: Of course. But those people are still paying bottomfeeders whose only reason for existence is to leech off others and so are contributing to everything going to shit for everyone. It doesn't matter how much money you have. Most folks who bought a PS5 for up to $1000 or more probably are nowhere near rich. Most folks can afford to spend that much nowadays. And many do because they don't value money anymore. After all what does it matter what you spend it on? It's not like you're gonna save it up to retire early or anything like that. Nah, you gotta spend it all while you can. In which case it doesn't matter if you buy multiple things at a decent price, or one overpriced one. Just gotta get rid of all that money.

@restatbonfire: There's supposedly still folks in some places of the world who are starving. And then guys like this who are willing to overpay to scammers so they can play some videogame. That's how people always keep fucking things up for themselves and others. And they don't even care because they can only ever think a few steps ahead.

@restatbonfire: I don't see the point of your comment. Have you done anything about it? Why did you bring this up? I also mentioned the stupidity of people but I haven't been able to do much about that either. Since you can't force morons to use their brain and any advice is usually ignored. As you've displayed here as well. Those folks just look for some excuse or go on the offense, attacking you on something completely random. Or make up a story about how they're adults who earn their own money and are free to spend it however they want. Always the same shit.

@deth420: I fail to see how this makes them any money. In fact it will probably cost money to implement.

@KahnArtizt: well Im sure these people arent paying taxes on their ill gotten gains. and the government always gets theirs.

dont get me wrong something needs to be done about it. but their solution time and again, is "fines."

*edit* maybe they do have to pay taxes on this. ebay forces you to right?

@deth420: Well, the government hasn't decided to tax scalping, has it? So when they ban it they're not gonna make any money from it either.

And ebay only forces you to have a business account if you're selling lots of stuff on their platform, as a business would. If you don't overdo it they won't care. And neither does the government. Occasional privat sales, even if they make you a profit, are generally fine.

@deth420: try reading the article. Nothing about fines. They’re trying to prevent people from even selling at ridiculous prices in the first place.

@KahnArtizt: No, your right. I got my wires crossed there. was reading another article about the EU trying to pass a law to penalize large corporations.

jumping back and forth.

and this will actually hurt uk's income. loss of tax rev. but again I ask ebay takes taxes from sellers?
