Unannounced Twisted Metal Live-Service Game Canceled - Report

The Horizon online game will continue, however.

A Twisted Metal live-service game has reportedly been canceled, but the Horizon online game is still in development.

According to Bloomberg, along with Sony's massive layoff of 900 employees, the company has also canceled a live-service Twisted Metal game. It was reportedly early development but wasn't given the full greenlight over at Firesprite, which also suffered an unspecified number of layoffs.

However, the Horizon online game is reportedly still in the works, even though developer Guerrilla Games was impacted by the layoffs as well. Other big studios within the PlayStation portfolio experienced layoffs too, including Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games. Even Sony's London has completely shut down.

Sony has made major investments in expanding into live-services and multimedia. The Twisted Metal adaptation on Peacock was a critical success, which makes this news more disappointing. Back in December, Naughty Dog canceled The Last of Us online multiplayer game, making Sony's venture into live-service games look shaky. However, Helldivers 2 became a huge hit this month as a PS5 console exclusive, so it's up in the air whether Sony's live-service investment will be worth it in the long run.

Twisted Metal works perfectly as a game with single player and live service content. It’s insane that Sony cannot make this work, even more with the amount of goodwill they got from the success of the series

Just make a traditional non live service Twisted Metal for everyone. I remember when 1, 2, and 3 were brand new. It was great fun. I was young.

I miss those days.

Too many jobs for too many people. Small studios showed that they can deliver quality games in a reasonable time without hundreds or thousand of people. Micromanaging everything generates jobs with no real future. I see in this a good thing, the whole industry needs to cool down and reconfigure.

@silentmind: It's actually bad, Sony is going to pass off the losses to its consumers.

How many studios wasted years of development for their games to be canned, and we get absolutely nothing even announced on the horizon? PS5 really is a pathetic system compared to all previous Playstation systems. No wonder Sony wants to release everything that's currently available on pc, its not like they have new games to release on the PS5. What a shitshow.

Thanks Jimbo Garbageass Ryan.

What a waste of money.

The PS3 installment of Twisted Metal would be good for a remaster if they just tweaked a few things. The control layout being the games biggest issue, what a mess. Game itself is solid, with great modes and maps.

That's kind of a bummer. Twisted Metal could work as a live-service game, as long as they don't get too greedy.

Maybe they will let Firesprite rework it into a real Twisted Metal sequel? Might be wishful thinking.
