Uncharted 3 gets a dozen Interactive Achievement Award nods

Naughty Dog leads the pack with 12 nominations for AIAS-organized honors, joins Portal 2, Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, and Zelda: Skyward Sword as Game of the Year candidates.

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences today released its full list of nominees for the Interactive Achievement Awards, with Naughty Dog's PlayStation 3-exclusive Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception leading the pack of 2011 games with a dozen nominations across 11 categories, including Game of the Year. The remaining candidates for the top IAA honor include Portal 2, Batman: Arkham City, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Uncharted 3 was well appreciated by the AIAS.

Uncharted 3's 12 nominations tops the nine nods put up by last year's IAA darling Red Dead Redemption, but the territory isn't quite uncharted. In 2010, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves garnered 15 nominations, winning 10 categories, including Game of the Year.

The next most frequently nominated game was Portal 2 with 10 nods, followed by L.A. Noire with nine. The only other games that made the cut in more than three categories were Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Skyrim, with six nominations each.

As for the publishers, Electronic Arts topped the list, collecting 21 nominations spread across 14 games. Uncharted 3 pushed Sony into the second place (18 nominations between five games), while Microsoft managed to take the bronze with 13 nominations for 11 games.

The 15th annual Interactive Achievement Awards will be presented Thursday, February 9 at the D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas. GameSpot will be live streaming the event, with comedian Jay Mohr once again hosting the ceremony. A complete list of categories and nominees follows below.

Skyrim doesn't deserve a best story award because story is plot, and Skyrim has a bad plot. If there was a deepest fictional world created, or best lore award sure... LA Noire was great, loved that game. Cole Phelps was a great character, deserves best character nod. For best adventure game, LA Noire is definitely a contender, though I haven't finished UC or even played Portal or Batman yet.

Good for them! Now They can use those awards as a driving force to fix the horrendous gun recoil for Machine Guns.

Well at least some awards think that Zelda is good enough to be nominated for something.

Casual Game of the Year award? Really? An award for a game made for people who don't care much for games? LOL.

@Jbul Skyrim innovations include the shouts, improved perk system, different level up system, non scripted dragons, real time conversation instead of pausing everything else around the conversation. Of course it would still feel like oblivion and morrowind but thats the point. Innovate but still have that feeling that you are playing an Elder Scrolls game rather than a Mass Effect or Dragon Age game. Whether the game innovates more than other games that could be nominated is debatable but it would ignorant to say that Skyrim had no innovations.

This just shows why you can't take AIAS awards seriously. Uncharted 3 has great presentation but very average gameplay.

Adam Jenson and Cole Phelps are 2 of the most boring 2dimensional protagonists i have ever played in a game, these awards are a joke.

U3 was great. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED U3. I enjoyed the game a lot since I played it bits by bits. I can not deny that I was most dissappointed with the end boss fight, considering how nice were the first and second game boss fights with the second game topping though a bit repetitive, very nice map... but the third one seemed like developed in a hurry. Still think the game improved in every other aspect though, again... some of the elements of the second game like SPOILER the train chapter seemed so improved but again repetitive on the third game SPOILER motorcade horse back chase.

Batman should win the GotY. Uncharted 3 a close second. You got to admit that UC3 wasn`t anything better than UC2. Maybe they could award UC2 GotY again ... :)

Wait a minute dragon age 2 "for outstanding achievement in online play"? Anyway skyrim is an amazing game possibly one of the best. However i don't think it deserves the award for innovation, mainly because they have practically done this in all its previous Bethesda installments, e.g. TES and Fallout series.

@Uesugi-dono: I work at a game retail store where I get at least 4-5 returns a day on the PS3 version. No shenanigans there, chief.

Surprising, considering it has more glitches than Skyrim... @Jbul - Shenanigans on the broken rumor. I've now collected 5 people I KNOW who are playing on PS3 who have save files over the supposed limit who have had no problems.

I agree with Jbul. Also, too bad dark souls didn't get a nomination for story. The story itself isn't that original, but the the way it's been told(or not told in fact), is excellent. You have to discover the story, great concept I say!

Some of these nominations are good, some are terrible. Skyrim for innovation? Great game (if you get one of the versions that isn't broken), but exactly what did it do to be innovative? Its like every other Bethesda RPG -- huge, great, but extremely buggy. But sorry, nothing about it is innovative.
