Unity CEO Says You're A "F***ing Idiot" If You Don't Think About Monetization During Creative Process, Apologizes

John Riccitiello has said his comment was taken "out of full context."

The current Unity CEO and former EA boss, John Riccitiello, has said that if studios don't consider monetization in their games during the creative process, they're a "f***ing idiot," but has since apologized for his comment.

During a recent interview with PocketGamer.biz, the CEO discussed the announcement that Unity and IronSource would be merging, while also touching on the criticism both companies have received regarding the inclusion of monetization during earlier development.

"Ferrari and some of the other high-end car manufacturers still use clay and carving knives," Riccitiello said. "It’s a very small portion of the gaming industry that works that way, and some of these people are my favourite people in the world to fight with--they’re the most beautiful and pure, brilliant people. They’re also some of the biggest f***ing idiots."

The CEO went on to elaborate on his former comment, explaining that the games industry has changed over the years, saying, "It used to be the case that developers would throw their game over the wall to the publicist and sales force with literally no interaction beforehand. That model is baked into the philosophy of a lot of artforms and medium, and it’s one I am deeply respectful of; I know their dedication and care.

"But this industry divides people between those who still hold to that philosophy and those who massively embrace how to figure out what makes a successful product. And I don’t know a successful artist anywhere that doesn’t care about what their player thinks. This is where this cycle of feedback comes back, and they can choose to ignore it. But to choose to not know it at all is not a great call."

Following Riccitiello's comments, he's received backlash from members of the development community, with some strongly disagreeing with the CEO's sentiment.

"I made Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year in 2018 (Donut County) using Unity, but according to their CEO I’m a ‘big f***ing idiot’ for not making Hole io, the f2p game that ripped it off," said indie game developer Ben Esposito.

Breogán Hackett, a developer who worked on If Found, responded on Twitter saying, "John Riccitiello thinks I'm an idiot. I think he's a little greedy capitalist pig who only cares about money. I'm so tired of people like him ruining things I love."

However, today Riccitiello tweeted out his apologies and said his words were taken "out of full context," adding that he was "deeply sorry if what I said offended any game dev." A subsequent, more in-depth apology followed that, which attempted to further explain what he meant.

This isn't the first time Riccitiello has commented on monetization in games. In 2011, he defended the use of microtransactions saying it's "a great model" and "it represents a substantially better future for the industry."

Unity has faced criticism recently after it laid off 200 workers shortly before acquiring IronSource in a $4.4 billion all-stock deal. Riccitello reportedly assured employees two weeks before the news that there would be no layoffs during an all-hands meeting but went on to lay off four percent of its workforce.

so what he saying all developers you design there game from ground up to nickel and dime you from get go? gtfo they that mentality of industry special for game we pay for up front is day gaming dies to me.

I dont have problem with pay extra for DLC expansions and what what but Nickle diming some after they already payed for game, just get something that purposely left out so they could do that is scummy.

Remeber when game have extra character hidden you had unlock or diffrent costumes? etc etc? Now we have honor of paying 4.99 each for such stuff... there plenty of game out there that prove this dont have to be done to sell like hot cake witcher games are one them

Keep the micro trasnations loot box crap out consoles game we payed for. Mobile gaming is cause of stuff infesting game game we payed for imo.

I know people that refuse to touch anything newer then ps2 gen games, for this reason

Congrats to GAMESPOT, IGN, GameInformer, GameRant and all other gaming websites for supporting awful moneygrabber games that have been flooding the market for the past 10 years or so. You don't condemn this kind of behavior, you LOVE it! You get money from companies so you review their crappy games as 10/10, SUPERB, AMAZING, PERFECT, then 2 weeks later criticism gets out, what a shock, it is usually bad. You monetize your own readers by claiming games are much, much better than they actually are, you support poorly written game scripts simply because they cater to your misconstrued and intellectually dishonest vision of what "diverse" and "inclusive" are, and ultimately you are by and large the LARGEST guilty party in this whole mess. Keep at it. In another 10 years, there won't be any good games at all. Only moneygrabbers.

He's being honest. That's the nature of gaming now unfortunately. If any Dev is offended, you'll address that by not having any microtransactions whatsoever in yo game right?...

Right....

Somebody saying this in any other industry wouldn't be met with this kind of hostility. Is it possible the gaming industry is plagued by a more anti-capitalist, anti-profit mentality, or does this mindset reflect negative implications for the consumer??

Also, it's weird how 'CEO' is used to label people as the bad guy these days.

@mattwoahyeah: you simply dont get it, this using games as money extractor RUINS games. What this tool was basically saying is, if you dont build a game with all kind of half ass grinding mechanics and unnecessary hoops for a gamer to jump through, if you dont build a half finished game with half the assets left out on purpose, youre an idiot. Because what these CEO tools would want you to believe that its good game design to do these things during design, so you can monetize the solution to these issues upon release. Monetization RUINS everything.

@totallytc: An this is what Gamespot does to us all. It ruins the production of good content, made by people who just want to share an opinion, and becomes a mechanism to generate more sales. Funny how it works...

@mattwoahyeah: Agreed. It’s the overall immaturity of gamers in general. Many of them are kids without incomes or hopelessly underemployed man-children. So any talk of games costing more or being monetized past their initial sale automatically leads to a lot of crying.

@Baconstrip78: Not entirely. only when it is an intrinsic part of the experience. Valorant, for example, monetizes, and it is fine. Cosmetic additions are never unwelcomed, and usually pay off. Free to play, btw.

However, when you launch a product aiming at dependence on further DLCs and such--not even additions such as Destiny 2, but RECOMMENDED content to understand the story--you are simply selling a half finished product.

Almost as if you go to a movie theater, and to watch the end of the movie you'd have to pay an extra 10 bucks.

@Baconstrip78: True. Scroll through the comments here and you'll see a lot of conspiracy theories and weird rants about how CEOs are going to make us all poor. Literally grade zero education level.

It's quite possible that some of these people have rotted their brains away by playing too many games.

@mattwoahyeah: Agree to a certain extent. Capitalism ain't bad in and of itself. i want game producers to make money, as much as me :)

However, Gran Turismo 7 (to give a concrete example) was ruined by its microtransactions--which were even worsened so to force players to spend money. Gran Turismo 3 was a much, much better experience, and ZERO monetization. 20 years ago. Meaning, not that long. And at that time, no games had this crap, and relatively speaking, I'd say even better games, particularly in cost vs benefit. In any case, when the end game is more money, and not a good product, you end up delivering on only one (more money) and usually deliver very bad experiences for players. Fallout 76. Gran Turismo 7. Diablo Immortal. Star Wars Battlefront (2015). List is long.

This man makes a living now, by saying divisive corporate memes - a current day Cliffy B for example. But this is a direction every publisher is actively planning if not already underway.

Gamers need to push back, educate, and support games that do not. Sadly it is coming, I just fear that too many people have their heads in the sand, still wondering if global warming is real or not.

He'll be in jail soon as he thought his "power and influence" could protect him from doing things like Harvey Weinstein did. Problem is, Weinstein actually had clout. JR does NOT. A former washed up Pepsi and Clorox and Sara Lee executive does NOT make good videogame decisions. Ever.

Can't believe this POS former EA CEO is still around screwing up the industry.

Wait, actually, I'd expect nothing less. And he's definitely found his natural home in the mobile space.

Frankly, I'd be totally cool if we used the mobile space like the area beyond the Blackwall from Cyberpunk.

Its his right to say what he wants and its our right to hate and disagree with it without silencing him. Free speech works both ways it does not shield you from critics just gives you the right to say it.

Of course for people whose life revolves around nothing but the pursuit of more and more money, anyone who doesn't see things their way is a moron. He has no understanding of what art or passion are. All that matters is if he can sell it for lots of profit.

And those kind of people are now reshaping the world. "The Great Reset" as they call it. And all it will lead to is that corporations will be god and everyone else will be a slave, begging for scraps. Because that's what they think is best for the world. And everyone who disagrees is of course a fucking moron.

@Atzenkiller: The Great Reset was a conference talking about how to jumpstart the economy again after covid correctly and with conscience.

The conference stream is freely viewable on YouTube, even though you won’t because your entire identity is built on baseless conspiracies and “not being a sheep like the rest of us”, amirite? And if you didn’t have that identity, what would you have?

I get it…

@gifford38: No one is trying to take away his freedom of speech. No one is suggesting he be jailed for saying what did. They are just exercising their own freedom of speech to criticize his comments. Living in a country with freedom of speech does not mean you live in a country where you no longer need to think about the consequences of your words or actions. It also doesn't mean you can't apologize if you feel like you made a mistake.

@gifford38:

It absolutely IS freedom of speech.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences for what you say.

If you want more protections for employees from being fired for such things, then support labor unions and collective bargaining or something.

Here's an example. I decide to throw a party and I invite people to the party. Someone gets super drunk at my party and starts acting like a jerk, dropping N-bombs and other ethnic slurs everywhere. I kick him out of my party as a result.

"That's not okay! You're violating his freedom of speech."

No I'm not. He is free to go say all the same things he was just saying at some Klan rally party somewhere. He just can't say them at MY party and force me to keep him in my house because of "freedom of speech".

@gifford38:

Again, they can, if they don't mind the consequences.

In this analogy, if they're to loud then their neighbors hear and complain.

Bottom line, this just isn't a free speech issue...because other people ALSO have freedom of speech. All the other comments that you see here in response to this article? That's just speech too.

And it is just as free. Mr. Riccitiello's comments make both himself - and by extension the company he runs - look bad IN MY OPINION. Therefore, I'm free to call him a dip**** for his views. Saying so...and having a lot of people agreeing...didn't negate Riccitiello's rights at all.

He could get as loud and as drunk as he wanted, but if people overhear and don't like it they're free to shout over the fence, "God you are SUCH a D***! I hate you so much and I wish you'd shut up and keep it down!"

This is where I think I differ in my opinion from the "political correctness run amok!" viewpoint. There's ALWAYS been consequences to saying unpopular things in society. It's not like that's some recent development in the world. It's just always been that way since the first cavemen figured out how to communicate thoughts through their grunting.

IN MY OPINION, people who complain about "political correctness run amok" want all the benefits of being able to say whatever the hell they want, but also want there to be no negative repercussions to whatever they say when they say something that's profoundly unpopular or frowned upon in society.

I just don't think that's a realistic approach to life. There's always going to be consequences to what people say and do. It's just how life works.

In this particular case, a lot of people really don't like how monetization trends are developing in the video game industry.

So when Riccitiello basically makes himself a stereotype of what a lot of people think are the worst aspects of those trends - particularly with his own personal history of being a strong advocate of starting them up to begin with - people are going to get pissed off.

@BeefoTheBold: Your house isn't required to observe public policy or employment rights. Bad example.

You're also jumping straight to extremes rather than considering lesser examples, such as people being fired over a minor off-colour joke or a slip of the tongue. I remember once being sent to the principal's office because some girl THOUGHT she heard me say something racist even though my friends all confirmed it wasn't true. And my dad was ACTUALLY fired for making "offensive" remarks when he told some guy "he's a big boy" (although in that case, he was responsible for the company coming after investigation for fraud, so they likely just wanted to get rid of him any way they could).

@Barighm:

Imperfect example, sure, but a bad one on the difference of freedom of speech vs. freedom of consequences for what you say? I don't think so.

Dropping N-bombs at work is a near surefire way of getting fired (evicted from the party) and would similarly not be a violation of freedom of speech. (Or even unfair or a problem since that would be creating a hostile work environment for others.) There's no employment right that says you can say whatever you want with no consequences. If you flip off your boss, it isn't a violation of your freedom of expression (speech) if something bad happens to you.

Two main points.

1. Censorship of speech only applies for the government...not any sort of private entities whether it is an employer or someone's private shindig.

2. It also does not apply to societal pressures at large. (Consequences of speech) Essentially, you can say whatever the **** you want...so long as you're willing to accept the potential blowback.

Someone absolutely CAN start dropping ethnic, gender or whatever slurs at any time or place of their choosing. And then people can react to that.

John Riccitiello CAN say what he's saying, but other people reacting negatively to it isn't some sort of free speech issue.

No surprise that Mr. "Project Ten Dollars" would hold that attitude. He did after all introduce that program to charge second hand buyers to access multiplayer for a mere $10, one of the most hated policies in the industry that died out after he left EA thankfully (and they eventually removed that from all the games which had it initially, though most of those games' servers are now shut down anyway).
