Universe at War to rage across PC, 360

Petroglyph and Sega's sci-fi RTS to allow cross-platform interstellar combat this fall.

When Shadowrun shipped for both the Xbox 360 and PC this month, the chasm separating console and PC gamers was at last traversed. For the first time, system warriors could frag each other in the same game irrespective of their platform. Today, Sega sends word that it too will participate in Microsoft's cross-platform initiative Games for Windows - Live with its upcoming real-time strategy game, Universe at War: Earth Assault.

To accommodate the commingling, developer Petroglyph will be implementing a variety of modes and gameplay balances. These multiplayer modes include the persistent-style conquer the world mode, where players compete in an ongoing struggle for complete control of Earth. And as with other Live games, Universe at War will feature achievement points, as well as other rewards and medals.

Universe at War: Earth Assault is slated for an October 2007 launch on the PC, but 360 owners won't be able to join the fray until the first quarter of next year. Check out GameSpot's previous coverage for more details on the game.

I have a feeling that the PC version players may have an advantage over console players.

"duhNeighbor: Partially wrong; PC is superior to console in FPS & RTS. Microsoft had to handicap Shadowrun on PC. Otherwise, the PC gamers would have totally destroyed console gamers. They could've, if any pc gamers were playhing shadowrun

not enough PC people are lookin into this. Statements that are being aimed saying that consoles are better for shooters are retarded. And the gentlemen that said that shooters on PC were aimed at, i do believe he said, "the lowest common denominator" must be smokin crack. Most high end shooters for pc have to announce thier requirements way ahead of time so we can upgrade before it arrives. And the last time i checked some ports, shooters that are on the 360 and pc, a high end pc (like mine! wooo xps 720!) look way better on PC. Oh well, whatever makes youu console ppl feel better, go on and say it. My pc will live long after your console is dead. With new componets i know, but it will still be my new PC, that is not only a game machine but a computer.

Interesting with all this focus on 360 RTS's we may see a situation where devs become proficient at making RTS's for consoles. still nothing can beat PC when it comes to RTS, oh well mine sucks so ill get it on 360

"Console superior to PC in FPS, PC superior to console in RTS...simple as that. " Please be joking :|. Cause if you're serious then you have never played a PC FPS in your life.

jmangafan exclusive is a term used only for console games, pcs are considered a completely different market, so technically darkvenom is correct. remember that gta3 was exclusive for the ps2, yet the pc version came out a few months later and it was still considered exclusive to a CONSOLE.

--DryvBy2 -- For shooters it would be the other way around I bet...360 will be good but PC's are all over the place for specs and they cater to the lowest common denominator for them. For RTS style I don't know...the console controller is a poor replacement for the keyboard so who knows.

At least some third part developers are taking advantage of cross-platform games.

DarkVenom. Do you know what the word "exclusive" means in this situation? It means that its only playable on one platform. Now tell me, are a PC and 360 two seperate platforms? Because last time I checked, they were.

I feel PC gamers would have a much stronger advantage with a game like this.

"the chasm separating console and PC gamers was at last traversed." Didn't FFXI do actually connect them with the PC and PS2?

Hopefully they control system for the 360 is easy enough that will give console gamers a fighting chance to beat PC gamers in the RTS world.
