Unreleased Half-Life Episodic Game Featured a Magnet Gun

"It would have complemented the gravity gun pretty nicely, I think," says Warren Spector.

It's been known for some time that Deus Ex designer Warren Spector and his former studio, Junction Point, worked with Valve on some kind of Half-Life project before shutting down. Now, he's revealed a few tantalizing details about what that game could have been.

Speaking with Game Informer, Spector was initially hesitant to share anything, wondering aloud whether he was allowed to discuss the project before deciding, "But what are they going to do, say, 'You'll never work in the game business again'?"

He then stated that Junction Point was "working on a Half-Life episode; they were really into episodic content at that point." Before getting too excited, keep in mind this was more than five years ago, and that this likely wasn't the elusive Episode Three we've all been waiting for. This episode would "fill in one of the gaps in the Half-Life story," though he didn't offer any specifics on which gap that was. "We were trying to flesh out a specific part of Half-Life, of the world of Half-Life."

In the process, Junction Point developed a brand-new tool for players to use. Where Half-Life 2 had the gravity gun and Portal had the portal gun, this episode would have had something referred to as the "magnet gun."

You can likely imagine how they might have functioned, and Spector remains enthusiastic about the concept, saying, "I still wish they would do something with [it]. We came up with so many cool ways to use a magnet gun that were completely different from anything they had done, and was really freeform in its use. I still think it would be cool." He later noted that he thinks it would have "complemented the gravity gun pretty nicely."

Junction Point wouldn't see development on the episode through, as things started to heat up with Disney--a place Spector says he "always wanted to work"--in a deal that would result in the studio developing Epic Mickey.

When jokingly asked if Mickey Mouse is to blame for a lack of Episode Three, Spector noted, "I think Valve was rethinking their episodic plan anyway."

You can watch Game Informer's full video interview with Spector, which goes on to discuss working with Disney, here.

The details of the Half-Life project from Junction Point--which shut its doors in 2013--had been unknown until now. Spector noted in 2012 that he worked on such a game, though that went largely unnoticed until it was brought to light Internet sleuth Superannuation in mid-2013.

Valve has yet to confirm plans for a new entry in the Half-Life series since Episode Two's release in 2007, though fans have done their best to encourage the company to break its silence.

by now, the only way half life 3 can be innovative, is by being instead of a videogame, a series of weekly administered suppositories that would somehow make you experience the story and gameplay trough your colon.

Just face it: Valve will never make another Half-Life. Steam has turned into a giant cashcow for them, and they have too much to lose if they screw up with a new Half-Life.

@Gordaton: They have "too much to lose"? Are you unable to see how dumb of an argument that is?

Gabe confirmed last year that it's in development. Just pull on your big girl pants and wait.

@naryanrobinson@Gordaton: They've had Episode 3 in development since even before 2009, it was supposed to come out in 2009 so if development started the same time episode 1 started that a hell of a long time to keep working on it, that's Duke Nukem Forever long....and look at em....

L4D, L4D2, Portal, Portal 2, CSGO, DOTA2 Team Fortress 2.......everything but their flagship title, everything but the thing they left everyone hanging on.....at this point they'd need to do a HD collection of HL2 and episodes before releasing Episode 3 or role episode 3 into the next game.....but either way thing's been in the oven way way too long....

@MJ12-Conspiracy: It was only recently that he said it, 2014 or the end of 2013 I think.

That's more of a sign to me than the fact that it's been a while.

They're doing a *hell* of a lot of stuff these days all at the same time, and since they're their own publisher, they're not against the clock.

And I'm 99% certain it's not going to be "Episode 3", that would just be absoultely nuts at this point.

I don't mind waiting all that much, it's just a video game, and I'm always surprised at the sources people find to draw their sheer anger from against Gabe Newell for not providing them with enough of the video games they adore.

@naryanrobinson@MJ12-Conspiracy: They could also be saving it to make it their big exclusive to help sell Steam consoles when they launch.

But honestly, I think that the reason we don't know much is that Valve has no idea when they are going to finish it. Remember when they scrapped HL2 entirely and started over halfway through development? They probably don't want to go into too many details until they are sure they won't be doing anything like that.

@NaturallyEvil: Yeah I think I agree with that.

It's probably on some kind of Valve back-burner for now, then when they've got things like Steam OS, Steam machines, Vive etc. rolling along nicely, they'll put their focus back on it and progress will be very quick.

As for when that'll happen, I don't know and I don't spend much time thinking about it either.

@MJ12-Conspiracy@naryanrobinson@Gordaton:

Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Portal 2, CSGO, DOTA 2, Team Fortress 2, and maybe L4D 3, Portal 3 with the new engine announced, so what's common with all those games? Co-op and multiplayer, so I guess Valve is dumping the single player games, a Half-Life co-op don't think would fit... so I'm starting to loose faith of seeing a new Half-Life game

@RockmasteR-_-@MJ12-Conspiracy@naryanrobinson@Gordaton: Portal2 had a great SP campaign, really great, so it doesn't really support your argument. If Valve made HL3 SP that was as good as HL2 was when released, HL3 MP would be a piece of cake to make. But I suspect the real reason for delay/obfuscation is that Valve realizes HL3 has a lot to live up to, including some other recent very immersive games with brilliantly executed storylines (such as Last of Us) so it's a challenge to meet the expectations let alone exceed them.

A this rate I think Half Life 3 is going to be palmed off to an indie dev who will make it a 8bit styillised, 2d RPG side scroller.

just stating my opinion : they should make a new half-life like game from 0 and drop the idea of ep 3 only because it might turn into a loss for them, so I think they should start over, if you do it right people're gonna love it that's my idea of course

@luert: There's already Black Mesa: Source. Sure it's not complete yet, although work is still underway according to their official forum. And you can't just not do something because it might fail - everything might fail, everything in existence might have failed. The reason anyone does anything is that it they might succeed.

Dammit, Gamespot... I hate it when you do headline articles on Half-Life games, because every single time my eyes just jump to "Half-Life" and for one brief, foolish second I allow myself to read the whole headline as though it's actually something exciting like a new Half-Life game.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Think of it this way, if a new Half Life game was coming out, gamespot would have a lot more than just an article headline. Or better yet, gamespot and every other gaming website would be down from heavy traffic

@lfebaggins@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Or maybe by the time it comes the Half-Life name will be so unknown to the then current gamers and forgotten by so many others it won't be a big deal.

I'm kidding but slightly serious :). I've said many times think about how many of today's gamers have never played any Half-Life or have no real interest in it. Sure the older gamers are not going to die off anytime soon (well maybe it will take soooo long they will be dead heheh) but that number will at best remain constant and probably actually diminish, while the other number will increase. So, the longer it takes, the smaller the percentage of the market that cares. That same thing will happen in the press too, as more and more older games journalists are replaced by new younger ones.

@lfebaggins@Blk_Mage_Ctype: It's just my feeble mind clinging to hope that HL3 isn't vaporware. I'm surprised that I haven't yet become one of the jaded miserable former fans, but gimme a few more years.

Deep down, I know that it will never be and that Gamespot is just posting clickbait as usual, but everytime I see the name "Half-Life" for a moment I'm a 10-year-old again and it's Christmas Eve.

Valve is not a video game company anymore. They just make money through steam and promote F2P, that's all. The last game that they made, that made me excited was Portal 2. I've no interest in Mobas.

Half Life 2 was not a blueprint for the rest of the games to follow lol. Where did you even come up with that?

Btw HL2 is the most overrated game of all time. It's what I'd play when I am having trouble sleeping. Problem solved.
