Valve Teases New Dota Card Game Called Artifact

Artifact is coming next year.

Valve today announced Artifact, a Dota card game based on the hugely popular MOBA . A teaser trailer was released, but it doesn't show much at all. It does, however, confirm that the digital card game will launch sometime in 2018.

The announcement came today during Valve's The International Dota 2 tournament. Teams are competing for a share of more than $20 million, making it one of the biggest gaming tournaments in history.

We will report back with more details on Artifact as they are announced.

Artifact will go up against other digital card games such as Blizzard's Hearthstone, Gwent from CD Projekt Red, Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls Legends, and Fable Fortune.

What would you like to see from Artifact? Let us know in the comments below!

Too many companies jumping on the card game bandwagon trying to compete with hearthstone. It's only going to hurt them all in the long run. This happened with physical card games as well. A bunch of companies tried to jump the magic bandwagon, and not many of them at all survived.

@Zorlac: They do it because you can scam it up with pay to win microtransactions. They're doing it because it's lucrative, not because they want to make good games.

Also, they've very cheap to make, compared to the trend 10 years ago when everyone was trying to make extremely expensive MMOs which killed company after company.

@Thanatos2k: I think @Zorlac is referring to the fact that: you aren't guaranteed to win if you buy "packs of cards". verses other pay to win type methods/services.

But, the thing he isn't getting is. You still up your chances regardless of your card pack..

@illegal_peanut: You really don't though. You still have to have the skills and know how to use the cards you get, and your cards could be complete crap, or even duplicates, so no, buying a pack of cards doesn't change your chances of winning if you still don't know what you're doing.

@Arkhalipso: 100% serious. I've played card games for over 20 years (since the beginning of magic the gathering), and buying a new pack of cards is in no way shape or form buying power, or pay to win. You still have to know how to build a good deck, the % ratios for how many cards are in your deck to your chances of getting an opening hand you want, how to combo the cards you put in your deck.

So yeah, I could go throw $5000 at magic, or hearthstone, or pokemon cards, and still not have a deck worth a damn if I don't know what I'm doing.

Again, I'm 100% serious, and I actually have the gameplay experience to know what I'm talking about here. Can you say the same?

@Zorlac: "buying a new pack of cards is in no way shape or form buying power, or pay to win"

I mean, you're 100% wrong, but you're also completely wrong, no matter how serious you are. I can prove it too.

Do you think you can compete with someone of nominal competence with a booster drafted deck vs 100% constructed? Please don't lie, your 20 years of experience (I have 25 years of experience btw) won't do jack for you there.

@Thanatos2k: In my 20 years of card games I've seen a $5 deck beat a $300 deck on a regular basis. If you have played that long, then you know this is true.

@Thanatos2k: Yes it's likely, did you not read the regular basis part? You're certainly not talking like someone with 25 years experience in card games. You're talking like someone who's just arguing to be arguing.

@Zorlac: Oh please. Let's quote:

"buying a new pack of cards is in no way shape or form buying power"

This statement is absolutely, factually, empirically, unequivocally wrong. It's so wrong that it's contradicted by every fact available about collectible card games, and indeed the very business model of collectible card games.

The only one arguing at this point to argue is you. But when one is so wrong they have no arguments based in reality, then I guess that's your only recourse left. I mean, other than saying "Yeah, I'm wrong, I was just making up nonsense" and bowing out. Let's see if your pride allows that.

@Thanatos2k: I've actually backed up my claims in every post, yet here you are just repeatedly insulting me and adding nothing to the conversation. Until you can back up why it's buying power, and why I'm wrong, then I have nothing more to say to you.

Oh, and do it without the insults. I'm not afraid to report every post you make.

@Zorlac: "I've actually backed up my claims in every post"

"I saw a $5 deck beat a $300 deck" is not backing up claims, it's a meaningless unverified anecdote presented without proof and a blatant falsehood to boot.

Crying out that you're reporting every post only reveals your deep, deep insecurity in everything you write, knowing that you have proven nothing and panicking that no one is accepting your nonsensical claims at face value. By the way, mods take note of people who spuriously report things, and it doesn't end well for them. You'll find no insults in my posts. Calling you out on your lies isn't an insult, it's the state of reality you've tried to peddle here to people who know better.

You're clearly also one of those kind of people who thinks getting the last post means you win any discussion, so go on, get your last post in. I won't be replying.

@Thanatos2k: I've personally taken decks of commons in Magic and beaten decks of rares on multiple occasions. This deck for example http://mtg.wikia.com/wiki/Building_a_Burn_Deck Is built of mostly commons and is still very strong today. Beating many decks full of rares on a regular basis.

I say again, you don't know what you're talking about. All you're doing is insulting me, and not even discussing the point anymore. Seriously man, just grow up and move on unless you have something to add. What you're doing is the very definition of trolling.

@Zorlac: No, I can't. I've never played a card game in my life but being able to buy cards seems like an advantage to those who can afford it even if it isn't a matter of just buying them and winning. Gameplay advantage = P2W IMO. Some games have microtransactions but offer absolutely no in-game advantage, like Dota 2, where every single item you can buy is just cosmetic.

@Arkhalipso: And a card game by nature is completely different than a moba. Card games have been successful for decades without being considered pay to win (good ones anyway), it's of course all in card balance.

@Arkhalipso: No, it's a necessary part of a card game. Everyone has to do it. There's no advantage to something that everyone has to do.

@Zorlac: Your experience is meaningless because you're blatantly lying. It seems that your experience has not led to increased knowledge of cards games, but led instead to an inflated ego who refuses to admit they are wrong. Or you're just trolling. That at least makes SOME sense.

@auronedge: No it reminds me of 1998 when everyone was making doom clones and Valve made a highly original shooter than changed the shape of singleplayer (and through the modding community: multiplayer) FPS forever.

And it makes me cry :'(

@R4gn4r0k: Nobody has seen anything of this game yet.... how can you say they are not making a highly original TCG that will change the shape of TCGs forever?

People are just being little b***hes here.
