Venom 2 Release Date Possibly Revealed

Critics might not have loved the Tom Hardy-starring comic book movie Venom, but audiences generally enjoyed it, and it made a ton of money. So it would come as little surprise for a sequel to be made, and now we're getting what could be the first word about it.

Sony Pictures updated its release schedule with two untitled Spider-Man spinoffs, and one of them might be Venom 2. According to Variety editor Justin Kroll, the first is a non-sequel set to open on July 10, 2020, while the second is a sequel pegged to release on October 2, 2020.

Kroll reckons the first one is the Jared Leto-starring Morbius the Living Vampire film, with Venom 2 to follow. Nothing is confirmed at this stage, however, as Sony only confirmed the release dates but didn't name the films outright. It's also worth noting that these are Sony's movies that they're making with Marvel. As for the next Marvel Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: Far From Home, is coming in 2019.

Venom got a very poor reception from critics. The film has a 29% on Rotten Tomatoes and 35 on GameSpot sister site Metacritic. The film fared much better with audiences, however, as Venom has an 86% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and an overwhelmingly positive reception among Metacritic users. Another measure of audience reaction is CinemaScore, a system that polls movie-goers for their thoughts. Venom had a very solid B+ CinemaScore rating.

The $80 million in US and Canada that Venom pulled in for its opening weekend set a new all-time October record, destroying the $55.8 million that the previous record-holder Gravity made in October in 2013.
