Video Game Group Blasts U.N. Report About Online Harassment as "Flawed" and "Misguided"

"If the overall issue was not so serious, it would be laughable that the U.N. is citing this work."

The Entertainment Software Association, the body that represents the video game industry's interests in Washington and puts on E3 every year, has spoken out to criticize what it's calling "flawed" and "outdated" research about video games in a new United Nations report regarding online harassment against women.

No Caption Provided

The ESA takes issue with the report, "Cyber Violence Against Women and Girls," for the way in which it "utilizes hyperbolic, outlandish, and outdated notions of video games and gamers."

Specifically, the ESA points to a opinion article written in 2000 that the report cites. This article, called "Programmed to Kill: Video Games, Drugs, and The 'New Violence," is "rife with antiquated views from noted and debunked anti-video game figures," the ESA said.

The cited passage in question reads, "Recent research on how violent video games are turning children, mostly boys, into 'killing zombies' are also a part of mainstreaming violence. And while the presentation and analysis of this research is beyond the scope of this paper, the links to the core roots of the problem are very much in evidence and cannot be overlooked."

However, the ESA took issue with this. The organization said one of the article's contributors, Helga Zepp LaRouche, "Mistakenly reports that children as young as two abuse digital entertainment."

“This is an uninformed, misguided, and unfortunate report," ESA president and CEO Michael Gallagher said in a statement. "If the overall issue was not so serious, it would be laughable that the U.N. is citing this work. It is willful ignorance to utilize such incredibly outlandish and outdated data."

He added: “ESA strongly supports empowering women and minorities and creating an inclusive digital environment that welcomes all perspectives. However, the U.N. does this important issue a great disservice and undercuts its credibility by spreading ridiculous stereotypes and false opinions."

The ESA went on went to say that medical professionals, researchers, and courts "all debunk the fundamental thesis" of the article. The organization pointed to a US Supreme Court ruling that found that “psychological studies purporting to show a connection between exposure to violent video games and harmful effects on children do not prove that such exposure causes minors to act aggressively."

Shocking! With Anita and Zoe on board you'd think there'd be all sorts of reasonable ideas.

Wake up people, the UN is a completely broken organisation in basically every single effort they partake. Politically undermined internally as a tool for use by powerful people for all the wrong reasons.

"Toxic" gaming culture discriminates against no one. Men, women, children, your cat, your dogs, your distant uncle's best friend's third cousin twice removed, the shirt you wear, the car you drive, the very machine you're trying to escape reality from that you play video games on and to trying to find others with similar passion, all are made fun of and criticized and had little mean tweets that may not be true. So this notion that gaming culture is harmful to especially girls and women is a bunch of horse manure. Also Anita is a fricken hypocrite, the damsel in distress trope that she is speaking out against in the gaming/movie industry is the same damn stereotype that she herself portrays when she ran to the big daddy UN because those mean misogynistic people that disagree with her narratives and are pointing out her flaws with facts and logic should be censored! Because apparently according to Anita, everything is racist and everything is sexist...well if everything is so I guess she's sexist and racist herself. Anyway I can get why Anita at least got invited to the UN so they can push out something similar to SOPA once again to try to control the internet but why Hoe Quinn? Seriously.

@sdinh225: Mock my SJW-ness. I'm certain you will.

...but how many men do you know that received death threats, threats of rape and decapitation, etc regarding pointing narrative tropes in gaming?

Really. This is a serious question -- can you honestly think of ONE? One man who suffered the same level of hostility and threatening behavior from the Twitterviathan that either of these women endured?

I actually agree with you that, comprehensively speaking, online abuse is rampant and doesn't discriminate. It is certainly magnified, though, when it's directed toward women. There has been some progress both at the industry and community levels toward greater parity and representation, but to suggest that women aren't a particular focus for scorn in a community still dominated by men is...absurd.

You don't have to spend 10 minutes on 4 chan or any of, literally, hundreds or thousands of other gaming-oriented sites (including the comments section here) to see this.

Count the ratio of posts ranting or chiding "radical feminism" or "SJWs" to more rationally measured posts.

I understand that anecdote isn't the plural of data, but this is a pattern repeated ad nauseum in the gaming community. The gaming community -- at least the hardcore pc and console communities (perhaps not the mobile space) -- have been utterly dominated by socially awkward and often culturally regressive males. I'm not demeaning folks for having a hard time finding their place in the world. I'm just making a point that this particular brand of rage seems to only be promulgated by *mostly* young men who seem intent on hating women for not desiring them.

I say this as a 37 year-old, married, father of one. I'm by no means an "alpha" in the sense most would employ that, but I'll admit to not necessarily having a deep understanding of the underlying psychology that seems to drive this kind of behavior.

I have issues with Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian. I have issues with what we might define as "radical" feminism. I have issues with "radicalism," in general. That doesn't make the points she raises about how gender is misrepresented in video games incorrect. It also doesn't mean that she hasn't correctly identified the core constituency responsible for it. She may not be an oracle, but she's also not intellectually vapid.

Honestly I never really have much problems with people being rude or unnecessary in games online because most of the time people aren't even talking when I play. I just never really hear people when I play online whether it's PlayStation or Xbox.

I do not see video games as violent toward women at all. I do think that there is too much adolescent sexual-ism and not enough character development. I do think women are constantly seen as victims in story telling or cannot be given dialogue past two sentences where they do not reference a man.

The UN report was comical, and the game industry is a close reflection of the movie industry where you see tons of national lampoon van wilders and few movie about real women in real situations.

I've realized that no matter what network, game or community, there will always be toxic people that just want to troll and make trouble. The best way to deal with them? Don't feed them, kick their butt, then tell them to shove it, just as the game ends. It's one of the best feelings.

Eddie, I'm surprised you didn't mention Sarkeesian and Quinn. Is it perhaps that you didn't want to use clickbait, or was it that you just did not know they were at the UN addressing the commission on this report?

@elheber: I can't believe how "big" Quinn has become, actually I can believe it given social media and all that, I just think it's kinda ridiculous. Every time I see her on some panel sitting next to established game developers or whatever, or worse this time addressing the UN, I think, why? What has she really done to earn such respected positions? Why is her opinion so valuable or important? I guess she just made the most out of her famous victim status, she even makes money from it, probably a lot of money, her Patreon alone is like $3600 a month. In fact maybe that makes her opinions less valid, I don't know. Maybe we'd get better perspectives from victims who did not benefit so much from what happened to them. In terms of career/success, it gave her a massive boost. I'd probably have a hard time not taking advantage and making money from it too, but I'd hope an organization like the UN would see through some of it.

Ah whatever :), normally I resist the urge to post comments on the matter. I guess this is the same as it's always been, celebrity makes people important, it's just that it can happen so fast nowadays and from out of nowhere.

Anita and Zoe basically cried to the UN so they can punish those who criticize them... They claim that it's too protect all women, but in reality it's only about their small clique of far-left SJWs.

Oh no...the regressive left turn out to be full of crap just like the regressive right...what a shock.

Anita cares about her own narative and does not care for discussion, debate or representing the truth. According to her the previous sentence was harassment...normal people call it criticism.
