Video Q&A: Gears 2 golden, Epic console-focused

Cliff Bleszinski discusses the <i>Gears</i> film, why the factory-bound sequel will <i>never</i> come to the PC, and his belief that Dead Space will be the year's sleeper hit.

This morning, the inevitable happened: Gears of War 2 went gold. The M-for-Mature-rated sequel to GameSpot's 2006 Game of the Year will ship worldwide on November 7. In the US, the Xbox 360 exclusive will be available in a $59.99 standard and $69.99 limited edition, with Amazon offering a $139.99 preorder bundle featuring a replica of the game's lancer rifle.

Unsurprisingly, Cliff Bleszinski is psyched. "Now that Gears of War [2] is done, the internal vibe from Epic is cautiously optimistic," the game's design director told GameSpot. "There's a lot of expectations to match up to from the first game, as it had a 94 percent average review score and over 5 million copies sold."

Now that the game is gold, Bleszinski's work as the design lead for Gears 2 is, for the moment, done. However, his task as promoter-in-chief is just beginning. At a recent Gears 2 gameplay event in San Francisco, the artist formerly known as CliffyB sat in a darkened room waiting for interview after interview.

"Now the hype train is in full effect for the second one, and there's just a tremendous amount of anticipation to live up to," he reflected. However, Bleszinski never seemed overly bored, wandering around a room with more than two dozen reviewers blazing their way through marathon Gears 2 sessions. He attentively gauged their reactions, like a film director sneaking into a movie premiere or a master chef watching diners sample a new dish.

"If you look at Gears 1, it was kind of Resident Evil meets KillSwitch type of game with, of course, a little Band of Brothers/Medal of Honor thing in there too," he said while watching the onscreen charnel house. "But now that we've established the characters, the gameplay, the universe, now's the time to have fun with it." He went on to explain that Gears 2 will take the best gameplay elements of the original, polish its cover system, and add new multiplayer modes, as outlined in a recent preview.

Given the talk of a trilogy, some gamers have worried that Gears 2 might have an ending like Halo 2's much-derided cliffhanger. Don't worry, Bleszinski assured. "Narrative-wise, each game needs to be a satisfying entity in and of its own space. And I can guarantee that Gears 2 does answer a lot of questions for the universe, but at the same time, it does raise a few questions."

Oh, and that trilogy talk is just that--talk. "I'm somehow quoted as saying Gears would be a trilogy, but I never actually said that," the designer complained. "There was somebody at Microsoft who made some sort of comment like that, but it's not the case. We're taking it at a very much game-by-game basis. If Gears 2 comes out and sells like hotcakes and has great reviews, then we'll consider doing another one."

Another one for the 360, that is. Bleszinski underlined the fact that, though Epic ported the original Gears to the PC, its sequel will never grace the platform. "Gears of War 2 is not coming to the PC. Ever," he said, flatly. "Honestly, at this point, from our business standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of sense right now to put in the amount of effort into doing a PC version."

According to Bleszinski, Epic Games is drifting away from the PC roots laid by its Unreal and Unreal Tournament games in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. "It's pretty safe to say that Epic is a console-focused company that does still support the PC in other ways, such as Unreal Tournament III coming out on the PC and whatnot," he said. "But Gears of War will remain a console franchise... It's one of those situations where the PC market is so scattered between the different hardware configurations and things like that [that] we'd rather continue to have a console focus as a company."

The designer also discussed the Gears of War film, which is being developed by Dark Knight and 300 production company Legendary Films. As part of the deal, Bleszinski, a 17-year veteran of the game industry, came on board as executive producer of the movie, which is tentatively due for a 2010 release.

"Movies are a very interesting business," he said diplomatically. "Acting as executive producer on a game adaption has been a learning process because Hollywood usually starts off with a hell of a lot of phone calls. From there on out, we start working on and cycling a script."

So how far along is the Gears film? "Right now, the script is just being worked on, and that's the stage we're in," said Bleszinski. "There's not a lot more to say right now other than I have a lot of confidence in the talent that's attached to this project. I think [Wanted screenwriter] Chris [Morgan] is an excellent writer, he's a very smart guy who gets the franchise, and [Live Free or Die Hard's] Len [Wiseman] is a visionary director who also happens to be a hell of a guy."

In closing, Bleszinski laid out what he thinks is the essential difference between games and film. "If you have a great video game and a crappy narrative, you still have a great video game," he explained. "If you have a movie that has a bad narrative, you just have a bad movie. But in a video game, if you can tie a great narrative and a great gameplay mechanic together, you have an all-time classic."

And, other than Gears of War 2, what 2008 game does Bleszinski think will come closest to fulfilling that promise? "I'm really looking forward to playing through Dead Space," he said, beaming at the prospect of some time off. "It looks fantastic. Mark my words--It's going to be the sleeper hit of the year."

@ Kelemhuna... Wow a $4000 homebuilt PC??? I would have rather spent that money in restoring an old classic car or buying in the stockmarket whiule it at an alltime low... $4000 IMO is a rediculous amount to spend on anything gaming related or even computer related IMO unless you are a developer and need to spend that much on software. As far as your PC haveing better graphics, Concole gamers do not really care, that is why we have consoles. According to "Moores Law" your $4k PC is already twice as slow and worth half the price as the new computers coming out now.

Its a shame some games like gears 2 are not going to make it to PC. I have top end PC and games look 20 times better on it even ported from console versions like Mass Effect PC for example made the 360 version look like dog crap. I have 360 Elite, PS3, and 4K watercooled homebuilt PC. High end PC Smokes PS3 and 360 visuals on medium settings for games. PC will aways be my favorate platform for gaming.I am very sad to see developers shying away from it lately. I bought my first PC back in 1990.Before this latest generation of consoles any Pc gamer would want to poke his eyes out with hot poker rather than play games on Ps2 or Xbox. With dX 9 3d cards in in current consoles things look a bit better.

All you gamers who seem to think the only good games are for PC are delusional. Platform loyalty is pathetic. "if it wasn't for pc gaming the xbox wouldn't exist..." What the hell kind of logic is that? That's like saying all games should be ported to/from coin-op arcades because that's where gaming started. It's not economically feasible, too many PC gamers know the agony of buying a new game only to find it doesn't perform as well as it should despite meeting recommended system requirements. Yes, there are many PC gamers with rigs good enough to play Gears on all the highest settings without any performance hitches, but are there enough of them to justify porting the game? I know PC gamers don't want to hear or talk about this, but be honest with yourselves. I'm not saying PC gaming is dead, I'm just saying there's a certain approach you have to take with PC games so you can make sure a wide variety of machines can run them, and that's not where Epic is focusing right now. Now before you go calling me a "drone" or "lemming" for defending Bleszinski, I have a PC that performs about as well if not better than my 360. I have many more PC games than 360 games, but the industry is changing. Nobody is backstabbing anybody by adapting to those changes, and it's irrational to believe Epic should make all of their games for the PC just because they used to do that. Things change, that's how the industry has always been, and old-school gamers (not suffering from amnesia) should be acutely aware of that. How can you call yourself a gamer and get upset about these things if all you care about is the PC? You've missed out on so much, at this point even if Gears 2 lives up to the hype it'll just be another drop in the bucket. The gaming world is moving forward, wake up instead of crying about being left behind.

old skool gamers should be pissed at his attitude cliff started this rollercoaster as community modder on the origional ut way before the days of fat kid console players so he is totally screwing his roots. but i feel it may not be his decision totally, but that doesnt mean he has to be the way he is and say the things he says.

Cliffy B. is totally backstabbing the PC gaming community that built the throne he's sitting on. I still play Unreal Tournament. I bought a legit version of all my Epic games, and frankly, I'm disgusted by his lack of respect for his consumer base. If he's wondering why UT3 failed, it's because the game should have been made with PC's in-mind first, then ported to consoles. Not the other way around. Sure there are pirating issues in the PC community, but that's not stopping Crytek, id, and Valve from releasing quality products on the PC with consistency. I'm seriously considering boycotting Epic, and from a die hard UT and Gears fan, that should mean something.

All the xbots keep posting down anyone who is for pc gaming, your all a bunch of drones, you defend this guy who craps all over the people who made him what he is. Epic needs to put a muzzle on Cliffy B, whenever he opens his mouth he acts like he is the authority of Epic games when its not true. Everyone knows how much he is a ms console fanboy. In past interviews Mark Rein has had to clarify things this little douche has said. Seriously Epic put your little pet in a cage. Without the pc gamers cliffy b would be living in a trailer somewhere staring at his rrod 360, collecting unemployment. Seriously, Lemmings is the right word, you guys need to realize if it wasn't for pc gaming the xbox wouldn't exist, it was made from taking pc gaming and cramming it an standardized box you can't upgrade and taking all the freedom away by making every thing cost, and locking down the system. My question to you xbots, would it hurt you to have Gears2 on pc? Then why all the hate? I doesn't make any sense, why not let people that have gaming rigs try out the game? I will never buy an xbox so don't even suggest that, the only way i would even think of playing a game like this is if it came to pc.

@Neon7771 You are extremely biased. Its pretty obvious that you don't play PC games, or you would understand that PC isn't dominated by MMORPG's and RTS's. There are games that are designed to be played on console (e.g. Devil May Cry 4, Assassin's Creed, etc.) and yes, GOW 2 may be one of them, but not because that's what the gamers want. Not everyone enjoys console shooters over PC shooters.

Note.Third person games are harder play using mouse then using a controller.Im just hyped for the Gears movie. I played BETA of CoD:WAW.GoW 2 looks like is worth my money more than the new CoD.Its almost a replica in every aspect of CoD:MD. It feels like an expansion pack played out in WW 2. Sorry for off topic comment.

@earthcannibal and other misguided people. Every good shooting game out for the PC is also either out for PS3 or 360 and has sold better on the consoles. CliffyB was smart for getting out of the PC gaming industry because its a mess right now for most types of games. It's dominated by MMORPG and RTS games. @Worldstar If you had half a brain you'd understand that Microsoft has no part in the money it makes off of PC games. Does Microsoft make computers? No, they make the OS, get a clue. They crap on the PC because they realize that anything short of an MMORPG won't sell good on the PC. What's the best selling PC game?? That's right, World of Warcraft. It's not about "roots" or any of your stupid ideas, its about whats popular now and what people want to play. People want MMORPG for the PC, and they want everything else on the console.

No port. Yeah right. As a recall Bungie said the same thing about Halo 2. Microsoft cant take the chance that they didn’t get your money the first time. PC gaming is not dying, but it is changing. In general Pc’s are far more versatile then their console brothers (mostly due to good mouse support). The PC supports more Role Playing Games, Real Time Strategy, Turn Based Strategy, and Flight Simulators. Until the consoles have good mouse and third party peripheral support, the PC will be the safe harbor for all games that cant be played well with a gamepad.

The only reason why Gear of War 2 isn't profitable on the Pc is because the game stinks compared to other Pc shooters that are already out. Until consoles fully support mouse/keyboard Pc will dominate consoles in every fashion..minus sports/racing games, but who really likes those types of games anyway.

I also wonder how much micro$haft has its influence in this...they don't want pc games, why do you think they made the xbox, so they can get money off of every game no matter if they made it or not. They want it on the 3fixme only so people will buy one. Greedy bastards. I don't like gears anyway, i thought the first one was a piece of crap game compared to other pc games. And Sony is my brand for console always has been since ps1 days. Cliffy B and epic is getting paid by microsoft as they are the publisher, MS has an agenda and cliffy b is just a pawn in it. If ms really wanted pc gaming they wouldn't of made an xbox to begin with, and they would of released halo, and gears simultaneous on pc, like other devs do. Cliffy b and ms can go rot for all i care. Both of these companies forget who made them what they are, and thy crap all over the pc platform.

Cliffy B is a tool..I hate this fool! GTFO Cliffy B, you shun the people that made you what you are today. Without pc gamers you would be nothing. Then you complain and whine when ut3 sold like crap. What do you expect? You released it winter 2007 when cod4, tf2, and crysis came out. You made it a dumbed down console game, not a full fledged pc game. You were lazy with the models. They a looked like recycled gears of war models, in size and shape. I loved the fluidty and feeling of ut2004, and ut3 felt clunky just like gears of whores. I don't get it cliffy b, you are the biggest backstabbing j-off. There really is no limit to my hatred of you. You joining the pc gaming alliance was a joke right? Piracy isn't killing pc gaming, its devs like you who abandon the roots of what made your games hits in the pc world in the first place! Just look at Stardock..no copy protection and great sales, why they listen to their pc gaming fans and do it right. Not like the pro 360 cliffy b. Your engine sucks and every game made with it has had problems.

sweet, cliffy B gets it. It pisses me off that so many people are still saying, "What the hell is Dead Space? I am looking forward to only Fable 2, Fallout 3, and GoW 2!" Dead Space in my opinion has had by far the best advertising campaign of any game ever released. Between the comic, noknownsurvivors, downfall, the lullaby trailor, etc. EA is clearly putting their heart and soul into that game and I totally agree with Cliff B. that it will be the sleeper hit of the year. A lot of people might not buy it at first but when it wins maybe best survival horror game or maybe best innovative game or who knows maybe just best game of the year a lot of people will prolly check it out. I hope they do cuz it might encourage EA to stop making so many lame ass games and realize that if they just put even half as much effort into a single game as they have with Dead Space they could focus more on quality of games and not just the quantity of how many and how fast they get em out into stores.

Chris Morgan's Wanted sucked hard. Destoryed the comic to high hell. Len Wiseman is still a suspect director. Gears as a 50/50 chance to be decent, but it might slip to trash if not careful.

it is more difficult to make a game run well on the large variety of PC builds there are out there but, I think the real reason pc gaming isn't profitable is the fact that people shamelessly pirate pc games, i don't blame him for making that business decision but hearing him say that does make me kind of sad, but at the same time i don't think pc gaming is going away any time soon. i wondered about his membership in the pc gaming alliance too, is he giving up or what? on the flip side, i think (hope) that valve will always make pc games

game will definently be awsome. the movie could definently be good. there is a lot of good talent going into it and as Cliffy said at comic con "there were a lot of really bad comic book movies out before there were some really good ones. I know there haven't been any video game movies yet, but there's no reason we can't be the first to try"... or something like that

"To all console gamers dissing PC... The way I see it is that console games are more of muscle games while PC games need more brain. Console games are pure action based without enough depth, unlike PC. I don't think there will ever be a Baldur's Gate, a Fallout or such for consoles. I'm not saying that console gaming is bad, it gets better and better. But too much of the same thing tends to get boring in the end. Imagine eating the same cake every meal; eve if it's your favorite cake, you'll get bored soon... But I feel sorry for some companies who seem to forget their roots; PC is the platform that made them what they are... " Your idea about console vs. pc games is ridiculous and baseless. Such an idiotic generalization should never be made. Both platforms have their share of good and bad games(some that require thought and some that dont". You're just going to have to accept that PC gaming is a dying breed and consoles are taking over the market. PS. there is a fallout coming out for consoles

Can not wait to get my hands on this game! As far as PC Gaming goes, I understand where Cliff is coming from. To release the game on pc you have to think of what the game needs to be playable on. Meaning the low end. Consoles are easy to develop for, you know the exact specs and shot for those. Not does it work with this card and that one. Also you know the console players are in for the life cycle of said console and hardware is locked. At the start of a pc game hardware is one thing, by the end you have a whole new market to target. Kinda hard to hit a target that is always changing! Some of us can not and will not pay the money needed to play games on a platform that is always evolving! I got sick of shelling out thousands of $ every year to play the latest games. In the economy we have now, I do not see many of us willing to spend the cash!

A movie on Gears... oh no. It better not come out to be like Doom or something.
