Video Q&A: Gears 2 golden, Epic console-focused

Cliff Bleszinski discusses the <i>Gears</i> film, why the factory-bound sequel will <i>never</i> come to the PC, and his belief that Dead Space will be the year's sleeper hit.

This morning, the inevitable happened: Gears of War 2 went gold. The M-for-Mature-rated sequel to GameSpot's 2006 Game of the Year will ship worldwide on November 7. In the US, the Xbox 360 exclusive will be available in a $59.99 standard and $69.99 limited edition, with Amazon offering a $139.99 preorder bundle featuring a replica of the game's lancer rifle.

Unsurprisingly, Cliff Bleszinski is psyched. "Now that Gears of War [2] is done, the internal vibe from Epic is cautiously optimistic," the game's design director told GameSpot. "There's a lot of expectations to match up to from the first game, as it had a 94 percent average review score and over 5 million copies sold."

Now that the game is gold, Bleszinski's work as the design lead for Gears 2 is, for the moment, done. However, his task as promoter-in-chief is just beginning. At a recent Gears 2 gameplay event in San Francisco, the artist formerly known as CliffyB sat in a darkened room waiting for interview after interview.

"Now the hype train is in full effect for the second one, and there's just a tremendous amount of anticipation to live up to," he reflected. However, Bleszinski never seemed overly bored, wandering around a room with more than two dozen reviewers blazing their way through marathon Gears 2 sessions. He attentively gauged their reactions, like a film director sneaking into a movie premiere or a master chef watching diners sample a new dish.

"If you look at Gears 1, it was kind of Resident Evil meets KillSwitch type of game with, of course, a little Band of Brothers/Medal of Honor thing in there too," he said while watching the onscreen charnel house. "But now that we've established the characters, the gameplay, the universe, now's the time to have fun with it." He went on to explain that Gears 2 will take the best gameplay elements of the original, polish its cover system, and add new multiplayer modes, as outlined in a recent preview.

Given the talk of a trilogy, some gamers have worried that Gears 2 might have an ending like Halo 2's much-derided cliffhanger. Don't worry, Bleszinski assured. "Narrative-wise, each game needs to be a satisfying entity in and of its own space. And I can guarantee that Gears 2 does answer a lot of questions for the universe, but at the same time, it does raise a few questions."

Oh, and that trilogy talk is just that--talk. "I'm somehow quoted as saying Gears would be a trilogy, but I never actually said that," the designer complained. "There was somebody at Microsoft who made some sort of comment like that, but it's not the case. We're taking it at a very much game-by-game basis. If Gears 2 comes out and sells like hotcakes and has great reviews, then we'll consider doing another one."

Another one for the 360, that is. Bleszinski underlined the fact that, though Epic ported the original Gears to the PC, its sequel will never grace the platform. "Gears of War 2 is not coming to the PC. Ever," he said, flatly. "Honestly, at this point, from our business standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of sense right now to put in the amount of effort into doing a PC version."

According to Bleszinski, Epic Games is drifting away from the PC roots laid by its Unreal and Unreal Tournament games in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. "It's pretty safe to say that Epic is a console-focused company that does still support the PC in other ways, such as Unreal Tournament III coming out on the PC and whatnot," he said. "But Gears of War will remain a console franchise... It's one of those situations where the PC market is so scattered between the different hardware configurations and things like that [that] we'd rather continue to have a console focus as a company."

The designer also discussed the Gears of War film, which is being developed by Dark Knight and 300 production company Legendary Films. As part of the deal, Bleszinski, a 17-year veteran of the game industry, came on board as executive producer of the movie, which is tentatively due for a 2010 release.

"Movies are a very interesting business," he said diplomatically. "Acting as executive producer on a game adaption has been a learning process because Hollywood usually starts off with a hell of a lot of phone calls. From there on out, we start working on and cycling a script."

So how far along is the Gears film? "Right now, the script is just being worked on, and that's the stage we're in," said Bleszinski. "There's not a lot more to say right now other than I have a lot of confidence in the talent that's attached to this project. I think [Wanted screenwriter] Chris [Morgan] is an excellent writer, he's a very smart guy who gets the franchise, and [Live Free or Die Hard's] Len [Wiseman] is a visionary director who also happens to be a hell of a guy."

In closing, Bleszinski laid out what he thinks is the essential difference between games and film. "If you have a great video game and a crappy narrative, you still have a great video game," he explained. "If you have a movie that has a bad narrative, you just have a bad movie. But in a video game, if you can tie a great narrative and a great gameplay mechanic together, you have an all-time classic."

And, other than Gears of War 2, what 2008 game does Bleszinski think will come closest to fulfilling that promise? "I'm really looking forward to playing through Dead Space," he said, beaming at the prospect of some time off. "It looks fantastic. Mark my words--It's going to be the sleeper hit of the year."

the reason I bought 360 was I was fed up with upgrading pc for every new game...consoles is the way to go.. ------------------------------------------------------- I haven't upgraded my PC in over three years! and only decided to upgrade recently to play crysis at very high settings. lol. it played everything else. and an upgrade these days is very cheap as well/ but I admit X360 is great value for money. their price drop is very very hard to resist.lol/

Here's something that's really hilarious:Epic isn't the publisher of the game. Therefore Cliffy B. has zero say in WHAT get's published on what platform. That's why i called him an idiot.

i must say CONDEMNED100- i read every one of your posts, and that dude was right, you have nothing to say about videogames at all, you just talk about how your hair looks like einstiens and you work at wal mart. or that you know something about science and humanity but you cant tell anyone because they will steal your ideas? certifiably crazy as eff. like, sure you may have something to say, but obviously not one person cares about it if it doesnt have to do with videogames or whatever. also, why post again and again on this interview? wierdo L

I'm seeing a lot of these stupid comments - like Bleszinski saying that Gears was "ported" to the PC - or a game has to be "ported" to the PC at all. Actually, the reality is that all games are made with and on PC's in the first place. Games - every last one of them - are born on PC's. They are then PORTED to another platform. SO what Bleszinski isn't telling you is that there IS going to be a PC version of Gears 2 - it just won't be released to the public. Maybe Epic just throws away that data? Maybe they are doing something truly stupid and rendering the game at low resolution - so they can save a buck. I'm not sure if Gears uses the Unreal Engine - but if it does, then theere really is no excuse not to bring it to the PC, because the Unreal (3) Engine runs on just about everything. I don't get Bleszinski's moaning as if they wouldn't be able to sell well to a PC audience either - Gears is one of those games that people will buy upgrades so that they can play it. His attitude - Epic's attitude is as if PC gamers are some kind of stepping stone. It's disappointing to see Epic take that position against the very audience that gave them the monetary resources to even MAKE a sequel. Disappointing enough to wait for the bargain bin (they are asking too much for the new game anyway). Yes, Gears is a great game - but not so great that I can't wait till the price drops. And if they don't meet sales expectations - well Bleszinski and crew can kiss off with their anti-PC mentality. PC gamers should consider banding together and forcing our own exclusive contracts. We pay thousands of dollars on a gaming rig, prodded on by game developers (look at the intro of any game) and then they diss us unapologetically and downright ingratefully. Is that what we deserve?

To all console gamers dissing PC... The way I see it is that console games are more of muscle games while PC games need more brain. Console games are pure action based without enough depth, unlike PC. I don't think there will ever be a Baldur's Gate, a Fallout or such for consoles. I'm not saying that console gaming is bad, it gets better and better. But too much of the same thing tends to get boring in the end. Imagine eating the same cake every meal; eve if it's your favorite cake, you'll get bored soon... But I feel sorry for some companies who seem to forget their roots; PC is the platform that made them what they are...

Well... They're not really discriminating on the PC thing or anything. It's just a smart business move. It's really hard to get it all set up on PC then it STILL has glitches, and issues... they probably put in so much money into it that it didn't sell off very well in the end... But this might result in a good thing later on. For now, I'm just really happy that Gears 2 is coming out soon... Hell yeah!! Get those pre-ordered lancers out!

I'm A Scorpio and A Pisces spirit is depending on me for something. I'm sure everyone remembers me telling you that I was In my backyard reading one of Einsteins books and I was sitting on Chair outside and then I got up with the book in my hand and I headed to my room then that night I went back outside and I smelled Cigar or Cigarrettes and I asked my mom did dad smoke a Cigarrette.? Then I realized he wasn't even home and my mom told me she didn't smoke a cigarette. tThen all of a sudden Einstein's Warping around the sun Theory entered my Mind just by looking at my Lamp.

Don't forget that cheap ripped of game that came out, you know what I'm talking about, do i even need to mention it? LotL anyone, pc gamers have no higher standards than console gamers, in fact, we console gamers have been getting better games since the old nes days, and pc has been getting the same crap crapped at them. Console gaming has changed since nes, pc gaming has always stayed primitive and boring. For example, what about the magnificent failure Gothic 3? That was pc only, I can go on forever, the fact is, pc gamers don't even have standards.

I must say I'm very disappointed with Epics decision to move away from PC. They've been one of the very few games developers who have provided consistantly good games and I've been a huge fan ever since the original Unreal. I was worried that this move away would happen when UT3 was just effectivly a port of UT2k4 to consoles with pretty graphics. I really hope that they attempt to resurrect their PC roots but unfortunately it seems that PC gaming is on it's way out :(.

Bloodmist "The biggest dicks of gaming are people who buy mediocre games. So, PC gamers have higher standards. What's wrong with that?" So that's why Planescape: Torment, The Last Express, Fallout 1/2, Deus Ex, and VtM: Bloodlines sold so well on PC, right?

PC gamers have Starcraft ii and Diablo iii to look forward to. Along with Warhammer 40K DoW 2....:P But seriously, i miss the times when developers took it upon themselves to come up with something new and evolutionary to get gamers really excited and curious at the same time. Don't all necessarily work out, but at least there were much innovation. Nowadays, you get more or less of the same thing. FPS, FPS, action, action....oooo pretty graphics. More prominent to consoles actually. Not to say its a bad thing, but too much of a good thing starts becoming stale. Nintendo with the Wii had the right idea on gameplay first and graphics second. But that's another story. With that said, regardless of what you guys might feel but i believe there is more variety and depth in games for the PC than that of a console. This given the fact that majority of console gameplay are either FPS or Third Person Action. Not saying that consoles are technically incapable of catering to more technically challenging games say like DCS:BlackShark(which by the way is the most kickass effort on Maddox part in bringing Pro-Sim to the niche) but more of if developers are willing to come out of the box and do something mind-blowing. But what can i say. People are getting lazier and lazier. So how better to cater to this demographic than to create games for these market group which unfortunately caters to majority of gamers nowadays. I am no exception :P. It's all about the money, which platform sells the most. Passion just took a dive off from a high-rise building and it ain't coming back. I love my PC. I love the fact that it's highly customizable. I love the challenge to come up the best configuration to play the next game on the shelf. I was brought up and introduced to gaming via the PC and started with Combat Flight Sims(A-10 TankKiller, Jane's LongBow, Falcon series, Flanker), CRPGs(Ultima,SSI D&D, Baldur's Gate) and Adventure Games(Monkey Island, Full Throttle) and every single time spent of these games were a joy, each one had a soul, each one a fond memory. No doubt GoW is a great game in it's own right and I have no doubt GoW2 will be just as great if not greater. And I'll definitely get it for the 360. But it will never have the same appeal as that of the games on PC, especially the classics. Bottomline is The PC may not hold the majority number of title as per console, but it will never, ever die. This becoz, some genre will never ever work as well as when on the PC (e.g. Flight Sims, HardCore CRPG ala Neverwinter Nights, RTS). Also, the gamepad/mouse-keyboard factor...lets just face it. Some genre just plays better with mouse-keyboard combo. Microsoft needs to sell copies of their Windows(Games drive sales, or we'd probably just opt for a Mac instead since they are so much better). Anyways, I've said my part...viva la PC!!!

Having bought the first game on the PC, I'm disappointed that there won't be a Gears 2 PC port. I invested time and money in the Gears universe and now, to continue the story, I'd have to get a 360. Something I've been trying to avoid. From a business standpoint, though, I'm not surprised. It's been more surprising how many good console ports have been released these last couple years to the PC. It almost seems like developers have been going out of there way to do PC ports, which suggested that there was still money to be made there. With Gears 2 now being the first high profile console sequel denied a PC port despite having a previous PC ported game in the franchise, perhaps this is the beginning of the end.

When you say "should of" what you really mean to type is "should've" - the shortened version of "should have." Because "should of" isn't English. If you can remember this, and also that it's spelled "ridiculous" not "rediculous" - you've conquered the English speaking gamer internets. Your reward is Gears of War 2.

I am a PC gamer also i have a high end rig and i have been a fan of PC gaming for along time. But i can see why Epic will not make Gears 2 for the PC, for starters the sales were not to good for a AAA game on PC and piracy is through the roof, i have heard quite a few PC gamers say they pirated gears 2 because it was a port of a console game, or they pirated because they did not think it fitted well as a PC game which is just bullpoo, PC gamers constantly make up excuses to validate there pirating whether it be DRM or high spec requirements they constantly make excuses for why they continue to pirate games on the beloved system. I bought gears for 360 and pc and it played perfectly on a pc so the arguement that gears did not fit as a pc game is nonsense. If all the hardcore PC gamers bought there games PC game sales would be higher than console games sales and there would be allot more developers making games exclusively on PC. I buy all my games for every system PS3/360/wii/PC/DS/PSP and would never think of pirating a game because am a true gamer and true gamers support the industry with game purchases. I dont see pc gaming dying anytime soon(i hope not) but if high budget games continue to have poor sales on PC more and more devs will become primarily console devs and just make a low budget port using an unknown team they can get for cheap. Pirates have ruined what used to be the best gaming community but they are so used to it that they dont want to pay for there games so they continue to use drm issues as an excuse to continue it.

I said the same thing about dead space in a thread about GOTY predictions. Gears Of War 2 is going to be amazing, i assumed it would be as the first was amazing but i really thought it would be much of the same thing as gears 2(which is good enough) but after watching the 1up show last night i think gears 2 will go way beyond what gears 1 did in terms of gameplay variety. 1Up played the first chapter and they went from starting off on the ground in a war torn city like the first gears but it went from that to riding those big trucks and fighting everything then i saw them riding a reaper through a big cave while being chased by brumacks then i saw them fighting reapers who landed on the ground to fight, then i saw them fighting more enemies and brumacks with an awesome mortar gun, then they were riding another reaper fighting and chasing other locust on reapers in a forest much like the star wars scene, it was awesome. The amount of variety in the first chapter was amazing also in the enviroments, war torn city like the first/dark underground cave/built up area's/snowy mountain top cabins/and then a lush green forrest, and that was only the first chapter. I loved gears 1 and still to this day its one of my fav next gen games along with bioshock and MGS4, and i knew gears 2 would be awesome but after seeing that video preview on the 1up show i am blown away with what epic are doing with gears 2. I cannot wait to play this game.

All human species you know you are smart you know Washington Is playing a game with the Middle class and the Poor. If Anyone Truly cared about the Economy someone would have already taken Action Immediately. It's A waiting game and I Predicted it just read my Previous Post days Ago before Paulson said we would have to be patient or to wait.

I still have HIGH HOPES for this game to make it to PC.Piracy is not an option it's just a lame excuse to not port the game.Piracy have been there since the Dawn Of Existence Of The Video Games. All of this is done for marketing purposes.I just wanna know why people are so mad about the PC version of Gears Of War got Extra content. The game didn't make any good sales.Epic Games said the sales were "Bull***"...Satisfied?! The Exclusivity should die.In my opinion any Video Game Company should make each and every game for all 3 systems and the player have the right to choose which system will he prefer to purchase the game. And there is no such thing as PC GAMING IS DEAD.Games are mainly being developed on PCs so stop pretending that this will ever happen.PC gaming is never dead and will never die. Edit: Breaking News:Fallout 3 leaked, pirated, a full 20 days before release. I think it's your turn guys to be worried. This is just the beginning.

People are Obsessed with the Economy. How Is it that they do not like People who Obsess themselves with Science.?. It's contributing to something useful these people that only think about the Economy and buying Stock are Obsessed. It Dominated their Minds. Therefore People with Science in their Minds Is something Useful. These people obsessed with the Economy crisis and buying stock can say the same thing about me that I'm wasting my time. However I can say the same thing about people who Obsess themselves with the Economy that they are wasting their Time and think about Nothing else but the Economy.
