Warcraft Movie Will "Veer Off" Lore in Some Sections, Director Says

Duncan Jones talks about how the movie will deviate from the core lore and why that shouldn't worry you.

The upcoming Warcraft movie from Legendary and Blizzard will "veer off" from the game's true lore in some sequences, director Duncan Jones said today during a panel at PAX East.

No Caption Provided

He did not specify any sections in particular where this will happen, but stressed that anytime it does, it's with the full support of Legendary and Blizzard.

Whenever changes to lore were made, it was done in such a way to "make for a better movie," as determined by Legendary and Blizzard, Jones said.

Actor Robert Kazinsky, who plays Ogrim, chimed in as well. He said the changes were made "by people who know how to make a great film and tell a great story."

Had these changes not been made, Warcraft could have ended up like 1993's poorly received Super Mario Bros. movie, Kazinsky said.

Check back later this weekend for more about the Warcraft movie. The film opens on June 10.

Here we go again..... Same story, same result - failure.

Here's an example of some potential "Small" changes:

- Orcs don't come from another world instead they've always been hunted and prosecuted by the evil humans

- Elves sparkle in the sunlight

- Magic causes climate change which is destroying the world forcing the Orcs and Humans to team up to use renewable magic sources.

I think it can be hard to make movies exactly like the games they're based on. And movies that have tried that have flopped hard. Look at Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Mario bros just to name a few.

So the deviation from the lore might not necessarily be a bad thing.

@thereal25: The 1st MK movie is actually pretty decent as an adaptation (it's not without flaws and crappy visual effects) because it actually followed the game's plot, unlike street fighter or super mario (though making a Mario movie is hard because there is not much plot to work with in the first place). The MK sequel though...

In case any one is wondering, ragging on the movie and hoping it does bad has become so common and mainstream that now it's even more edgy and non-conformist to look forward to it and hope it does well.

Yeah , change one of the best and well written lores in video gaming that going strong like 20 years now to make it another ROMANCE-DRAMA LOVE story for the sake of tickets.

Gtfo seriously now ... After this "Veer off " ill be waiting for users/critics on IMDB/Meta before i pay to get dissapointed to a movie based of one of my favorite video games lore ever.

That's not a female orc in the picture, that's a human made to look a little like an orc. Anyone who seen a female orc in World of Warcraft knows they're ugly as f*ck!

this movie is going to flop hard... seriously a warcraft movie? bring warcraft 4, make world of warcraft lore to be a spin-off and continue the main series without the random mmo players beating the h3ll out of all the important franchise characters, this movie is the last batch of milk from the warcraft cow before it goes to expire, and it's gonna be bad, very bad....

I think they meant that if they veered of any MORE that it would have ended up like the Mario movie. That movie followed no lore whatsoever except for the names of the characters. If it did follow the lore then it probably would have been a better movie and more accepted. The way I see it now this Warcraft movie will end up like every other video game movie....utter sh*t!

This movie covers the events of the original Warcraft, right?

The one that communicated story using scrolling star wars opening text between levels?

The one whose main characters were never depicted in battles, instead opting to have their identical armies clash?

I know they added a lot of great stuff before that time period, like the with the Old Gods fighting the Titans, elementals, and each other and the sundering, and the trolls conquering the world, and the burning legion chasing the draneor across the galaxy and corrupting the the draneor and orcs and...

My point is, there's a lot of established lore, but the account of the first war between orcs and humans was always pretty bare bones. I don't think it should be that hard to improve it.

Wait...they're saying that if they didn't veer off it would be like the old Super Mario movie. Did they watch the same Super Mario movie that everyone else did? Because it was nothing even close to the video games.... are they saying the Warcraft lore is bad or something lmao?

And I love that Super Mario Bros. movie, btw. I know its dumb, but I still love it.

The one thing I hate the most is how they think changing things is better for the movie, which to me is saying those things suck, yet they worked for the game, which is the whole reason it's being made. And the only reason Mario sucked is because they tried to adapt it to modern times, instead of leaving the nature sense of it. They have no idea what they are doing, and Blizzard will be sorry they ever let them change it.

@helldragonzer: how about you leave adapting screenplays to the pros lol. Some concepts just aren't practical to realize on film - especially considering they have so many constraints (like getting it all in at 2 hours or whatever).

@GreySeven: It reminds me of the movie "The Giant Gila Monster (1959)"- the guys keep putting their leg up on a table and leaning on it. Sometimes three guys in the same shot will do it. It's amazing.

Because veering off the core lore has worked for so many other video game movies. Maybe this is the reason you see so many articles titled 'why do video game movies fail?'

All this is is a bi-product of Blizzard selling out. During the development of the attrocious WoD expansion we had Azeroth Cycles or whatever the hell that stupid shit was. To paraphrase one of the most famous quotes of the game: "Your Blizzard is not your Blizzard, wakener."

This would be big news.... if people hadn't already written this movie off. People were cautiously optimistic when this movie was announced. But, the early trailers were not good. Now very few people even care anymore.

"Had these changes not been made, Warcraft could have ended up like 1993's poorly received Super Mario Bros. movie, Kazinsky said."

I'm not entirely sure in what universe that comparison makes sense. Mario didn't really have much of a story when the movie went into production, kill the bad guy and save the princess, was pretty much all had to go on. Warcraft's lore is so vast you could make a hundred movies before you even started on the content of the novels!

That said, we'll see how this plays out soon enough! Don't cock it up!

"Had these changes not been made, Warcraft could have ended up like 1993's poorly received Super Mario Bros. movie, Kazinsky said." the SMB movie was poorly received BECAUSE they made those stupid changes! Instead of the Mushroom Kingdom and saving the Princess from King Koopa they decided to establish an alternate universe where dinosaurs didn't die off and now Koopa is Dennis Hopper and Goombas and Koopa Troopas are giant dudes in trench coats. And the Orc woman in that picture looks like she's from a WoW porno spoof.

This movie is going to be a trainwreck. All they needed to do was make a CG movie like Blizzard is great at but NO they had to make this live action crap.

I have a sibling who worked on Warcraft (on the VFX - interestingly the movie production has been complete for almost a year) it seems they did a few screenings of the unfinished movie during production (with just a few vfx missing) apparently people adored it. In complete seriousness, Warcraft should be the video game movie that finally breaks the box office and opens the floodgates to other high budget/high quality VG movies. Assassin's Creed and a few other VG movies in production are also being taken more seriously (finally) and might surprise everyone. I'm quite confident that assuming Warcraft makes a lot of money, video game movies could become the next comic book/superhero trend.

When you compare the history, you can see many similarities. Just like VG movies, comic book films weren't taken seriously at all for a long time. Studios would basically use a popular brand name, stick the title on a cheap movie with minimal talent (i.e. expenses) and be content with the low but mostly guaranteed returns they made on cheap movies that sold themselves through title. Sounds familiar? It took Spiderman and X-Men for studios to realize they could potentially make blockbusters out of a genre with an endless supply of material. Finally, VG movies are only just starting to pierce through, with dozens of projects already in early production. The success of Warcraft will greatly influence what comes next. The great news is that Hollywood moves extremely fast when there's money to be done.

Look at Deadpool, an R rated comic book movie (a big ''no no'' for most studios until then) and after its massive success, within a week we were hearing about several movies now aiming at the infamous R rating. So the moment Warcraft becomes a big success (fingers crossed) every VG movie projects currently procrastinating production will instantly jump into high gear, hiring high talent directors, writers, actors, etc. And before you know it, we've got a Star Wars scale Halo and Mass Effect movie being announced; The Uncharted and Last of Us movies already in early production suddenly get an inflation of budget and talent. Animated/3D (Pixar like) movies based on more classic VG icons start coming out each year. Heck we've already got Ratchet & Clank coming next week and an Angry Birds movie next month (the latter being incredibly recognizable by even non gamers should be a big success too) -In fact I expect Angry Birds to be the one to open the Pixar VG movies flood gate.

Anyway all this to say I wouldn't be worried about Warcraft. It's going to be awesome!

"Had these changes not been made, Warcraft could have ended up like 1993's poorly received Super Mario Bros. movie, Kazinsky said."

This implies that it was poorly received because SMB didn't change enough about its source material.
