Warhammer 40K: Space Marine leads THQ's triple play

[UPDATE] Long-rumored PS3, 360 third-person action RPG based on Games Workshop IP officially unveiled; Biggest Loser DS and Wii-bound, Marvel Super Hero Squad headed to Wii, DS, PS2, and PSP.

After unveiling its new first-person shooter Homefront yesterday, THQ has followed up with a bevy of game announcements, starting with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, the first next-gen console title based on the classic Games Workshop tabletop game. The game first surfaced on the game-industry radar last September, when a video of what appeared to be the game surfaced on the Web.

No Caption Provided

While the Warhammer 40,000 universe has featured in multiple PC titles, including the critically acclaimed Dawn of War II, Space Marine marks the series first outing on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Developed by THQ's in-house studio Relic Entertainment, whose previous works include Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes, the title puts players in control the Space Marines as they battle aliens and demons in an effort to save humanity.

Space Marine is only the second Warhammer 40,000-based game to not feature strategy gameplay, the first being the less than well received Fire Warrior back in 2003. Instead, the title will be an action role-playing game experience and focus on controlling individual units in a narrative-driven story campaign, as well as in online multiplayer.

[UPDATE] Though the video promised a third-person action combat game" focused on "an up-close personal melee experience," Relic's Space Marine is an entirely different animal. "That was a pre-production video of a completely different game from a different internal studio," a company rep said. "The game Relic is working on is a totally new project built on a new engine."

THQ hasn't announced a ship date for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, but THQ is set to reveal more at the forthcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo next week.

THQ also announced two more games today, both based upon US TV shows. Marvel Super Hero Squad ties in with the fall launch of The Super Hero Squad Show on the Cartoon Network. The title sees players take on the role of their preferred superhero as they face up against Dr. Doom's legion of villains in no less than six single-player campaigns and an online multiplayer battle mode. The game will feature 20 Marvel characters, including Captain American, Iron Man, and Wolverine, action adventure gameplay, and an animation style that "will appeal to a younger audience." THQ gave no release date for the title but did say it would be coming to the Wii, DS, PS2, and PSP.

Finally, THQ is getting into the fitness game with The Biggest Loser, which is coming to the DS and Wii. Based upon the NBC show, the game will see trainers Bob Harper and Jillian Michaels provide comprehensive workouts and nutrition goals. Players will take part in four, eight, or 12-week fitness regimens, which include upper, lower, and core body exercises, as well as cardio and yoga. The game also features 50 recipes from BiggestLoserClub.com , which can be used in conjunction with an interactive calorie counter to help users work toward their fitness goals. The game is due for release this autumn.

I dont think it'll get out for PC. Relic only said that they're not abandoning PC players and that they'll give PC players new Dawn of War stuff.

They better fix the bolt gun, seriously a burst of like 3 rounds into a traitor guardsmen and he just gets stunned? It should have blown his chest open.

They really need to get to a good PC FPS game going (not like the horribly buggy Fire Warrior). Still, this one definitely looks like it has promise. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Here's hoping that the 40k game is a belter, and that it leads to a few other titles where we get to play with/as other factions like the Eldar, Guard or Adepta Sororitas. The Marvel game is a possibly-hot title, hopefully by 'younger audience appeal' they mean something along the lines of the JLA art style, which is simple but fairly pleasing to the eye.

This sounds like the old PC game from the 90's called Space Hulk. It was a 40K game where you played Terminator Space Marines and fought against Genestealers (aliens). Horus!

Also, even if they were smashing and bashing each other, all their attacks seemd realyl flimsy and weak, not at all depicting the brutality, of W40k as well as having an almost constantly flat and open battlefield. Lame.

Um....I dunno about this. I totally love the idea of a really gritty Warhammer FPS, I just think hate when games have you a the one hero-soldier fighting the whole war. Also, in the real game and the RTS cover is a huge factor, here people seem to be running around like a Halo 3 match, which is really lame, kind of makes all the guns feel really weak and pointless, which they are definitely not. Looks disappointing unfortunately so far.

For those of you who hadn't got word of this yet, this trailer shows off the action gameplay a little bit more vivid than you seen on the leaked video. << LINK REMOVED >> And from what it looks like its going to be very interesting (would say epic but lets not get too excited shall we XD). Enjoy. *Suffer not the alien to live*

I kinda liked that Space Marine video that leaked... looked like it had potential to really depict the most brutal fantasy universe ever dreamt up. I think the perfect 40k game would take a leaf from games like Oblivion and CoD: MW and meld melee and ranged combat together in a frantic FPS experience. With lots of online play of course. But I think it would also require a big leap in AI bot programming, so you could really get those big battles right.

It's sad to see that this game thinks firearms are just something to do until you get close. Being a IG player I find it offensive.

I am so glad to see that Warhammer 40K is getting the attention it deserves. I've been a fan of the universe for a while, but never got into the tabletop game. It's a very intriguing universe and a perfect fit for videogames. The first good Warhammer 40K game I played that actually felt like Warhammer 40K was Chaos Gate, and I loved it. This one looks awesome as well, and I'm glad to hear it's more action oriented and less strategic.

I love Warhammer40k's story, but Firewarrior was such a subpar game I don't want to get my hopes up (but I probably will). I also didn't like the youtube video of it. The bolter is not supposed to be a useless weapon that exists just so that you can use the chainsword...The fact that most the melee combat is cinematic is kind of annoying...

Mmm, I wonder if this game will have any resemblance to the single player mode in Dawn of War 2. That was, in my opinion, a pretty action-RPG-y experience right there.

So, if that video from last year was from a different game, and Space Marine is an RPG, then... It's time for the five W's! Who: mixed the two up, and who's making the game from that vid? What: is the name of that 3rd-person shooter from the vid? Where: will the games be released (as in, which systems)? When: can we expect these games to come to us? Why: were the two mixed up? Whatever. I'm pumped. THQ is making a kick-@$$ comeback!

An action-rpg? Honestly, that makes more sense to me then a FPS for Space Marines. Space Marine squads are small, elite units. A single squad is enough to turn the tide of a battle. They're heavily customized and each SM usually has a specialist skill or heavy weapon. Sounds about perfect for a RPG party. Can't wait to see what they do with it.

Sure Relic is an RTS developer but its good that they are trying out a Third person action. They are the only developers that truly understand the Warhammer 40k universe.

i'm glad that Relic is willing to try something new. so far i think it looks decent. customization of your weapons and leveling ups like in Dawn of War 2 would probably be necessary for it to be a candidate of GOTY. In the video the guy mentioned multiplayer, i assume there will be different classes for each race. i'm curious to see how they will make units with only ranged weapons work. Relic is well known for their ability to create cinematic moments but i hope they don't overkill it in this game. too many of these slows the phase of the game down too much. the punching sequence in my opinion takes way too long and it won't work in multiplayer. Overall i think this would be a great game if they add some gears of war element for ranged combat. and if they don't add team based combat in single player, i'm looking forward to see how they'll make the story to explain why you are alone in the middle of nowhere. but then again I'm a PC gamer so i probably won't get to play this anyways :(
