Watch Castlevania Producer IGA Play the Best Game in the Series

Two-plus hours of Koji Igarashi discussing Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.

Koji Igarashi's long-running involvement with the Castlevania series started with 1997's Symphony of the Night, widely regarded as not only the franchise's best game, but also one of the best games of all time. If you've ever wanted to hear his thoughts while he plays through the game and sips red wine, you're in luck.

As part of Double Fine's Devs Play series where various game developers share their thoughts while playing games they either love and/or worked on, Igarashi--also known as IGA--sat down for some time with SotN. He's joined by Double Fine senior gameplay programmer Anna Kipnis, who describes SotN as her favorite game of all-time. The two take turns playing while Igarashi offers various thoughts over the course of two-plus hours.

Igarashi went on to contribute to more than a dozen other Castlevania games. He's currently working for Japanese company ArtPlay, which he says is trying to "create new experiences for mobile and consumer devices."

Symphony of the Night was the second PS1 title I ever bought. It would have been the first had I known it existed, and saw it in the glass case at Wal-Mart. I bought Colony Wars first. I still had some cash left for a new game so I decided to go back the same day to purchase a different genre. For variety. I saw Castlevania there and thought, I didn't know they made a new one! I knew I would enjoy it, I didn't know it would be the best video game I had ever played.

I personally Liked Circle Of The Moon the best. I've beaten that game so many times I lost count.

Castlevania: SOTN was hauntingly unique in so many ways. You can't duplicate a piece of art like this.

Wonder if they'll try and add SoTN to Steam for PC for nostalgia. I'd certainly purchase it.

Grew up on Circle of the Moon, an exceptional game. Came to Symphony of the Night later; while its balance and difficulty is all kinds of whack, its systems and core gameplay and art and music are incredible. Now I'm slowly working my way through the other two GBA Castlevanias.

What a series, man. Castlevania embodies what's so cool about video games.

Personally I think the GBA and DS Castlevania games were the best ones, but oh that's right, we only count video games that appeared on consoles I guess.

More content like this please Gamespot. This has been the most interesting feature you had to date.

SotN is amazing and will remain one of my personal favorite gaming accomplishments 101% percenting it (or was it 110%? I forget...whatever, fully completed it)

@kay2kid@jkdwest: SoTN is my favorite, but I completely agree Aria was much better than Dawn of Sorrow and comes really close to SoTN for me. Comparing Aria to Dawn: the control was tighter, the weapons and combat were more satisfying, the graphics although lower resolution felt much more cohesive, the castle was structured really well, and I thought it had a better story. I got 100% in that game twice and wanted more, but when I got to the end of Dawn of Sorrow, I think I looked into what else there was, maxed out a weapon or two and never went back (although it is still a great game as well.)

The greatest 2D Action side scroller ever as Gamespot's greatest games page called it.

Half the awesomeness of this game belongs to Michiru Yamane - the composer. I wish they hosted her as well.

A gem from the golden age of video games. The golden age of KONAMI.

Today konami makes t-shirts. Shame...!

I completed Rondo of Blood, then it's sequel, Symphony of the Night back to back and you would be surprised how good Rondo of Blood is. Amazing game. Maybe even a little better if you like the challenge up a notch.

SOTN is really good. But the fact that they refused to stray from the MetroidVania style games pissed me off. I wanted a classic side scroller Castlevania somewhere between then and now. Instead I got a bunch of handheld SOTN clones, or terrible 3-D games

Who in the phuck would watch 2 hours of someone else play a game? Ah who am I kidding, there's going to be some jackass who justifies it.

I can't wait! I'm glad he started his own development company. His games will sell in the MILLIONS, and Konami will begin to see their grave mistakes. Just like EA, the behemoth that is Konami is sinking under its own weight! Mr. Igarashi is one of my heroes.

You know David Cox and the people at Mercury Steam must have felt awkward essentially taking the reigns of Castlevania while Konami put Iga in a cubicle and forced him to do mundane busywork.

They basically fired him without actually going through with it, so I can see why he would leave.

I don't know if I'd call it the best, compared to a few of the later handheld games. But it's definitely one of the series high points.

SOTN is certainly NOT the best game in the series, that honor goes to either Rondo of Blood or Bloodlines. So many people are clueless, lol.

@prats93: Or they just have different preferences. Many fans that prefer SoTN over the two you mentioned probably get a lot out of the exploration, control over your characters equipment, and general RPG mechanics.
