Watch Dogs Becomes Fastest Selling Game in Ubisoft's History

Ubisoft's open-world action game Watch Dogs is the fastest selling game the French publisher, which also is behind the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises, has ever released. The company announced today that the game sold-through more copies in its first 24 hours of availability than any previous title in the history of Ubisoft.

This data is based on internal estimates for all platforms as of May 28. Ubisoft did not share a specific sales tally for Watch Dogs, but its initial success comes as little surprise, as Ubisoft said last week that the game was its second most preordered title of all time. Watch Dogs was also GameStop's most preordered next-generation game ever.

Ubisoft expects Watch Dogs to sell more than 6 million units throughout its lifetime. That's the same mark that 2007's original Assassin's Creed did.

"Watch Dogs is an amazing achievement and our teams should be proud that the creativity, innovation, and long hours they invested in making this game are paying off," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "It's great to see so many players enjoying the game, and it shows that Watch Dogs has cracked the code for developing a new blockbuster IP and a thoroughly new-gen experience."

After more than 5.5 years of development, Watch Dogs launched yesterday, May 27, for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC, with a Wii U version to follow. Its release didn't go off without a hitch, however, as some users reported login issues yesterday.

Watch Dogs' release this week is just the beginning for the game. Ubisoft plans to support the title with multiple expansion packs through the $20 Watch Dogs season pass. In addition, there has been talk of a sequel, which--if it ever happens--won't take nearly as long to develop, Ubisoft said in April.
