Watch Final Star Trek Beyond Trailer; New Character Jaylah Inspired by Jennifer Lawrence
The last trailer for this week's sci-fi action movie has arrived.
The final trailer for Star Trek Beyond has come online, just days before the sci-fi action movie is scheduled to hits theaters on Friday, July 22.
This one sets up the story, showing brief glimpses of the new bad guy, Krall, who is played by Idris Elba and is seen here breaking into the USS Enterprise. We also see Kingsman's Sofia Boutella as the alien Jaylah. Take a look:
In a press conference attended by USA Today, Beyond writer Simon Pegg said the character Jaylah, who was created for the movie, was inspired by Jennifer Lawrence's character in Winter's Bone. Jaylah's temperament and even her name are drawn from the Hunger Games actress.
"We were trying to create this very independent character. But we didn't have a name for it. So we just called it 'Jennifer-Lawrence-In-Winter's-Bone,'" Pegg said. "That's a long name. So it started getting tiring always saying, well Jennifer-Lawrence-In-Winter's-Bone is fighting here. So then we started calling her J-Law. And then she became Jaylah."
Lawrence was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in 2010's Winter's Bone. She portrayed a character named Nee, a teenager tasked with taking care of her family in the Ozark mountains.
As for Beyond, the film also stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Director Justin Lin (Fast & Furious franchise) said recently that Beyond is "very different" from prior films, and it also features the series' first openly gay character--though not everyone is happy about that. In other Star Trek news, it's been confirmed that a fourth film is on the way, which will feature Chris Hemsworth as James Kirk's father, George Kirk.
