Watch New PS4 Pro Mass Effect: Andromeda Gameplay; New Trailer Teased for November

New gameplay footage of BioWare's Mass Effect: Andromeda finally released.

During Sony's PlayStation Meeting BioWare showed new gameplay of Mass Effect: Andromeda. The video featured actual gameplay running on the newly revealed PS4 Pro. During the event, it was confirmed that Andromeda would support PS4 Pro when it launches.

The video, which you can watch above, shows protagonist Ryder exploring a cavernous area while squadmates discuss what he's encountering. The jetpack ability is used to navigate the area before discovering a map of possible vaults. The squad is then chased off by enemies before the demo ends.

Now Playing: Mass Effect: Andromeda - Official 4K Tech Trailer with Commentary

A Mass Effect: Andromeda developer diary featuring Aaryn Flynn, general manager at BioWare, has also been released. In this video Flynn discusses how the studio is using the Frostbite engine to leverage the power of the PS4 Pro. You can watch that here.

During the dev diary, Flynn states BioWare will premier a brand new Mass Effect: Andromeda trailer on November 7 and "officially open the doors to the next chapter of the Mass Effect universe." This date is N7 Day, which BioWare uses to celebrate its sci-fi franchise.

You can take a look at some screenshots from Mass Effect Andromeda below.

No Caption Provided

Mass Effect: Andromeda is separate from the original trilogy and follows a new protagonist's journey to find a new home for humanity. The setting has been shifted from the Milky Way to the Andromeda Galaxy from, where it is hoped mankind can colonize new planets.

According to BioWare, Andromeda will have new civilizations, creatures, and enemies. One of its key themes is the idea of humanity being the aliens, which is why the studio opted for a new setting.

Mass Effect: Andromeda was originally scheduled to come out in 2016, but in May, BioWare announced that it is now coming in "early 2017." The game was delayed "to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be," BioWare said at the time.

Obviously this was a tech demo and I have no doubt the game will look so much more polished in the trailer and end product.

My main hope for the new Mass Effect is that they don't go the same direction as DA:I. While DA:I was ten times better than DA2, it lacked personality and individualism. All the character, no matter what their backgrounds or position, came across as uber safe and friendly. It was almost like the dialogue and behaviour of the characters was created not on what would make them feel real in the game world and serve story purpose, but on what is the nicest way to behave. Even the characters that were supposed to be the "wacky" ones held some weird invisible behavioural restraint that seemed to penetrate the entire script. No matter how much blood splatter you cover them in, it doesn't change this deep flaw.

I like Bioware because they do at least try to accommodate different people based on gender, race, sexuality etc, but at the same time you can't brand everyone with the same stick then expect to have great drama and character interaction. It's like you're neutering your writer's pen. Yes continue to be inclusive but do so in a manner that reflects the reality of the game world otherwise you end up with Care Bears in space.

This was showed off to give us an idea of what the game will look like. I wasn't expecting any rpg, dialogue options, or combat. We will see that in November. The 4K look was more for the people there then us watching it at home. I will say HZD looked good.

What are they smoking to show this first off? No dialogue options, 10 mins of walking, any RPG mechanics at all?

You know when I think of Mass Effect I think of heavy dialogue, RPG mechanics, coupled with shooting. This gameplay did nothing for me. It felt like I was watching Mass Effect the platformer.

@omnichris: Actually, the gameplay was probably something I enjoyed MOST about ME3! ME1 was pretty clunky, but it kept getting better and better. It's REALLY rare that I think the gameplay in an RPG is something to really applaud... Usually RPG's are all about the story, and the gameplay is sort of just there to service the story and add interactivity... Typically I get annoyed when I have to fight in RPG's, or at minimum find it a bit of a chore- however in ME2/ME3 I always looked forward to the battles and found them quite engaging and thrilling.

@p1p3dream: same here. actually I found witcher 3's combat to be quite good but obviously after playing bloodborne my standards went up way higher. Mass effect 2 and 3 had excellent squad based fighting.

I'm not sure how interested I am with this game.

Because I know about It's entire universe pretty much. What else is there to learn. The biggest draw for me in Mass effect was the lore and its universe and its characters. It had a great beginning, middle and it had an end. It's like if a group of dudes decided, fck it, lets write a book after the Return Of The King in Lord Of the Rings. Just to make bank. After The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings series, there's nowhere really for Lord Of The Rings to go. Unless they go all the way back to the beginning of time, where everything began. They could do that for Mass effect, I guess. Like when Humans first arrived to Mars and they had a war with the Turian and ther was a lot of backlash when Humans were going to become part of the council or maybe go back to the time where Krogan were ruthlessly taking over the universe and had to be put down with the genophage. My question is. Is there anything else in this universe that will make me play this? Im considering playing the Mass Effect Trilogy again. Over playing this.

Bioware can make pretty graphics, but man are they terrible when it comes to hair. And from what I see here, it will again be plastic wigs like it was in DAI.

@merwanor: Most devs are for some reason, especially in games with customization. It's always the hair that's garbage. I get really annoyed when I want to make a female character and everything is less than shoulder length with about two crappy options even coming close.

"If you're not watching this on a 4K screen, find one and come back?" Dude, that tech is super high-end. How many of us do you expect to be rich enough to afford something like that? Concentrate on making a compelling experience, and few people will care how cutting-edge the graphics are. You'll sell more copies.

@dominoodle:Hmmm I actually just found some on sale for 300 or 349 USD at best buy so I guess you're not wrong on that front.... I expect the price varies more markedly with territory though. Honestly though I'm content with 1080p or even less these days. I'm more interested in maintaining that stable 60 fps, and improved physics/AI. I'm more intrigued by the frostbite weather effects than I am the shiny character models atm.

@presauk: The biggest price factor seems to be size. I sit pretty close to my TV so i don't really need a big one.

And i agree, i would have loved for them to say "if you play on a 1080p screen then the games will run at 60fps!"

@JRLennis: Unfortunately, its easier to sell the suckers on shiny pictures than it is to sell compelling gameplay. So the race will always be about having the best graphics, not the best gameplay experience. That's why with all this power, things like AI are still PS2 era level.

@Sepewrath: I thought it was funny when they commented something about 4K bringing new levels of immersion, I was like umm no, immersion never seemed to be related to resolution. Although graphics can help immersion, resolution alone is not the only factor, and it's likely the PS4 Pro and even the high powered Scorpio will have to make a lot of graphical (and as you touched on other kinds of) compromises to keep decent framerates at 4K.

@hystavito: Well they've already said Mass Effect will be 30fps on Pro, so despite the graphical and resolution upgrade, the framerate is still locked at 30.

@hystavito: I don't totally disagree with any of you- but I do want to add that after having personal experience playing on 4k resolution for a while now and comparing... I actually have to say it DOES add to the immersion of the experience. The best examples I can cite are GTA5 and The Witcher (ESPECIALLY The Witcher)... Obviously its always dependent on the developers how much mileage they will get out of these technologies... but playing the above games at 4k was really impressive. I'm not going to go so far as say, it was COMPLETELY a new experience like the market hype, but it really does help the immersion, for the simple fact that at 4k resolutions the jaggy edges / aliasing really just kind of disappears and melt away, and you're left with just like this beautiful painting in motion. Last night I played The witcher for the first time, and it may sound cheesy (and i WAS a little stoned) but when I caught my first sunset i practically let out an involuntary gasp- it was just far and above one of the most impressive landscape ive seen yet...

but you all brought up the important issue of frame rate- and the immersion of 4k wears off immediately if you're rig is stuttering through it. i just recently got a new video card, Titan X, which some might be familiar with- and its capable of running these 4k scenes at 60fps and above. But the power to sustain these frame rates doesn't come cheap, so its probably not that practical yet for a few more years.

@p1p3dream: its a good example, Witcher 3(haven't played GTA5) in that it can bring immersion, that game used motion capture in the best way possible in a way that it all became almost like a movie (but beter cuz ther is no human error factor where u hate an actor then the part he plays is ruined too), the sudden twitches on geralt's face showing emotions and all that stuff plus a beautiful world that u get urself lost in it.

but the other thing that @Sepewrath said about immersion not being related to graphics can also be true, the fact is that the truth lies somewhere in between. having a powerful graphics engine is a tool just like any other, if they use it properly and in line with the goals of the game and not o just show off it could lead to amazing things(like in the case of Witcher 3) but unfortunately we have seen too many games do the opposite of that, so in the mind of a hardcore gamer that has seen too many rpgs taking the wrong way in development its better to have everything perfect except the graphics cuz they have been hurt from that point before

@Pooya1881: And I totally agree with you here. This is actually why ART DIRECTION is so important to a game. Some developers strive purely for the most cutting edge and photo realisitic graphics achievable at the time. The problem here, is that what is considered "cutting edge photorealisitic graphics" is moving target that changes every year... and after 3-5 years depending, a game designed that way will really start showing its age and just not hold up.

However games like The Witcher, GTA, Borderlands, Mass Effect, they take a more STYLISTIC direction over photo realism... usually its a more painterly approach, more emphasis on style and creative thoughtful design... so these games tend to age much better, with the other factor being that they also are much more easily immersive... because once you get use to a games visual style, you just accept its world, especially if the art direction is solid and it is kept coehesive. whereas a photorealisitic game can be immersive up to a point, but if the technology cant quite paint something right, it might end up looking a bit odd or awkward which of course breaks the immersion...

good discussion!

I kind of dislike when they spend so much for the graphic look but gameplay ends up being not as much fun, k guys you did a fine job with graphics but don't dissappoint us on the gameplay, people get used to these things fairly quickly, works at 1st shot but not at the 2nd or the 3rd
