Watching Dune On HBO Max Is Like Driving A Speedboat Through A Bathtub, Director Says

The director of the upcoming sci-fi movie once again criticizes the decision to bring Dune to HBO Max upon release.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve has once again criticized the decision to release the upcoming sci-fi film on HBO Max on day one, lamenting that watching a film of its size and scale at home is similar to driving a speedboat in your bathtub. Speaking to Total Film, Villeneuve doubled down on his anti-HBO Max comments in the lead up to Dune's release in October.

He acknowledged that the movie business is "under tremendous pressure" due to the pandemic, but he is still upset that Dune is coming to HBO Max.

"The way it happened, I'm still not happy. Frankly, to watch Dune on a television, the best way I can compare it is to drive a speedboat in your bathtub. For me, it's ridiculous. It's a movie that has been made as a tribute to the big-screen experience," he said.

Responding to the decision by Warner Bros. to release all of its 2021 films on HBO Max day and date with theatres due in part to the pandemic, Villeneuve said it was a business move by WB's owner, AT&T, to make money.

"There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here. It is all about the survival of a telecom mammoth, one that is currently bearing an astronomical debt of more than $150 billion," he said in December 2020.

The director acknowledged that streaming services have a role to play and in fact they are a "positive and powerful addition to the movie and TV ecosystems." Still, he said he wants movie fans to know that "streaming alone can't sustain the film industry as we knew it before COVID."

"Streaming can produce great content, but not movies of Dune's scope and scale," he said. "Dune is by far the best movie I've ever made. My team and I devoted more than three years of our lives to make it a unique big screen experience. Our movie's image and sound were meticulously designed to be seen in theaters."

Kyle MacLachlan, who starred in the original Dune, also questioned the move to bring Dune to HBO Max. "I think the simultaneous release is kind of the wave of the future. It's disheartening though because a movie like that is meant to be seen on the large screen," he said.

Villeneuve isn't alone in criticizing WB's move to bring its 2021 film slate to HBO Max on day one. Christopher Nolan, the director of Inception and The Dark Knight, said the movie studio's 2021 films are being used as loss-leaders to subsidize HBO Max.

"In 2021, they've got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they've got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences," Nolan said. "They're meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences... And now they're being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service--for the fledgling streaming service--without any consultation. So, there's a lot of controversy. It's very, very, very, very messy. A real bait and switch."

WB will end its day-one HBO Max strategy in 2022. The company has already signed 45-day movie window deals with US movie giants such as AMC, Regal, and Cineworld.

Disney is facing some heat, too, over its decision to launch new movies in theaters and on Disney+ at the same time. Black Widow's Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney over this, while the House of Mouse is also facing criticism over calling Shang-Chi an "experiment" with its release model.

Dune, which is based on the Frank Herbert novel, is slated to release in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22. It stars Zendaya, Timothee Chalamet, Jason Momoa, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, and Dave Bautista, just to name a few from its massive cast.

I have not been to see movie in theater in over 20 years, for a reason why would i want to go pay ticket price that is in most cases MORE then price of the bluray. just be annoyed by the other people in theater that are on there phone and talking...

Nevermind pandemic we have going and fact people dont want to wear mask, it might not "mandatory" but it is still recommend by cdc you wear it in public and around other you dont live with. not that they want to do any of that before the vaccine, and now there vaccine. which lots people refuse to to get, and those that do dont want wear the masks anymore. just look at florida if it was country it be one worse in world. vaccine is not even effect for all the variants for the original it is. then when it all get shut down again, there will be riots and what not. maybe if people listened in first place. thing would not be the way they are. some states have already make masks mandatory again.

Even if pandemic wasnt a thing I still would not go see movies in theaters. 20$ a ticket and severely overpriced snacks and drink, sticky floors and annoying people that talk and are on there phone during the movie?

I enjoy movies more in comfort of my home more then I have ever enjoyed them in theaters.

regardless of if the movies go to streaming immediately or weeks later, I'm not going to the theater to see it, sorry. I'll just wait to see it at home so I can have modern convinces at a much cheaper price. Hollywood movies had become so cut and paste and formulaic in the decade before Covid that I had little reason to blow the money at a theater anyway. I see little reason to spend $40 on 2 tickets and another $25 for drinks and stale popcorn to see a generic comedy or corny superhero movie #37 when I can wait a few weeks and stream it for free or out right own the dvd or $20 if I want. Sorry but for me the "movie experience" isn't really worth the price of admission, especially when the subject matter is a rehash or reboot of something I've already seen multiple times before.

Screwing over actors, directors and other people who make the film to promote your crappy streaming service is a pretty dick move. There is no reason why they can't have it in theatres for a few weeks for those that choose to go to them and then stream them for those who don't. Let the theatres make some money and let the actors, directors and others get their bonus from ticket sales and then have it on your stupid streaming service. I prefer to watch movies at home and I am more than willing to wait a few weeks so the people in the industry can make money. Otherwise, blockbuster movies will become a thing of the past and we'll be stuck with straight to TV arthouse movies and subpar movies like the ones NETFLIX buys for their service that would never make it into a theatre.

Should have made a better movie I guess, idk.

And like WTF do you want the studio to do?! I totally get and appreciate the passion, but there's kinda a bunch of shiz going on in the world. Maybe your outrage should be at anti-vacc/maskers...yell at THEM.

@jasoncourt: We don’t need to where masks anymore. It’s no longer mandatory in shops and entertainment centres.

Looking at some of these people talk about the "movie experience" and then try and trash home theaters is cringe. The experience sucked....people talking or yelling during the movie, cramped arm in arm with strangers, and I'll be honest watching on projector anything is w/e. 70" OLED's in my comfortable living room with a good surround sound beats the "movie experience" 10 out of 10 times. Movie Theaters are dead, and no amount of romanticizing what was in fact a miserable experience will change that.

I enjoy watching movies on my home setup. Theaters are uncomfortable. Drive ins are cool but a novelty.

Just get your union to negotiate streaming backend and be honest that the back end revenue is 100% why people are fussing. Artistry is just a red herring here...

@faithxvoid: Unless you have a great setup with a projector and 7.1 surround sound the experience will be quite lacking. I watched Dunkirk on IMAX, then a while ago I watched it at home on a 55 inch TV and I thought boy this movie is half as good like this. And you can't compete with a 3D theater either, many movies loose a lot without the 3D aspect. I never experienced Avatar like I did on IMAX 3D, no chance you can emulate that unless you have an awesome setup. I seriously pity those who watch this big budget 3d experiences on their TV's, the first time is the best.

Yeah I'll stick to watching it in HBO Max, or would you rather nobody watches the movie? I went to see Free Guy on release day, there was 12 people total in the theater. Hollywood just can't get over the fact, that they're not making huge money off this movies like before. You'll have to figure something out Hollywood, first drop the whole wokeness act, second figure out a way to make money of streaming, because this might be the new normal.

@alex33x: Well that's actually a lot more people than what i saw when i went to see my last two movies. I saw don't breath part 2 Last week and there was actually only 4 people in there and only 3 people for the other movie that i saw almost two months ago. That's a combined of 7 people in two movies. I rather stay home too and stay away from reckless people that can put my life in danger.

So callous, people should have to risk their health to enjoy the movie. There are bigger problems in the world than how you see a movie. I get that the theater is the "way" it was ment to be seen... but it eventually ends up on the small screens like all movies do. How can you say a movie is supposed to be seen in a way its only shown in a finite way? The movie will or won't be cherished for generations to come on screens that aren't in theaters. Personally never got to see the first DUNE in theaters, bet I've seen it at least a 100 times.

Seriously theater movies coming to home services via early access or w/e is the best thing that's every happened in the movie industry. Screw the theater.

It's in the viewers' hands (eyes) now. The director has made his appeal. You can choose the experience you want. I love watching everything safe and sound in my living room, but I'll be going to my local theater to see this extravaganza.

I empathize with the director and having his vision compromised, but I also support viewer choice. See it how it was meant to be seen, or settle for less. But you decide.

Honestly there is no difference between a good home theatre and going to theater. But reality is this film by the trailers alone gives off that syfy channel made for tv movie feel. Unless the trailers were poor quality this director seems like he is trying to preemptive strike why his remake is gonna flop.

@talos48: The fact this has been made twice already with very mixed results doesn't help either. I do hope third time's the charm though and they finally get it right but I'm not holding my breath.

@BostonPimpDaddy: Lots of theaters are still closed. Also, Delta variant, which is likely to be the first of many in the long line of variants of this plandemic. The studios are trying to make some $$$ somehow. This might be a wake up call to cut back on these multi million dollar films too and make Hollywood realize that in order to keep alive they might need to go back to making films with much smaller budgets in order to not lose money. If this means the decline of superhero and sci-fi films then so be it.

@ironhorse89: The studios aren’t losing money, they’re just losing profit. So what if they don’t make five times their budget on opening weekend? If Denis V movies didn’t make money, nobody would constantly be giving him massive budgets to make his film with.

HBO Max will order a sequel anyway. The steaming market is so competitive now.

@bloodbornelore: Streaming may be competitive, but will they risk 200 million plus budgets for big films in the future? I seriously doubt it. But hey, it's Hollywood, stranger things have happened and it's a strange business.

@olddadgamer: Hey it's no joke. I know I'll be streaming on my humungoid 18 inch i-phoblet handheld screen (you know the one with the fancy kickstand, I personally upgraded to the rhinestone one from Amazoom) with my surround sound usb/bluetooth combo shower speakers (it counts as surround sound if you put 10 speakers around you in a circle, right?). Throw some towels over the curtains to make it extra dark, then get some stale popcorn from last night's late show.

Definitely better than the theater experience.

Some people are delusional. They think their big screen tv/projector is the same thing than an Imax theatre, or some 4D Imax. Well it is not! What the quebecois film director says is absolutely true. Some films are meant to be watched at a theater. If you want the full experience of course. A real cinematic experience (oneiric like it is meant to be) requires more than a setup in your basement or living room.

@FallenOneX: Not to hijack the OP here, but setup aside, there is something about seeing a movie in a big room full of people. You can have top of the line electronics at home, but, unless you have a much better social life than I do, it's unlikely that you're going to be able to pack your living room with a couple hundred people.

@olddadgamer: Why do we want to be with a lot of random people? I think if I really wanted to watch a movie with others it'd be just a few friends.

Though it definitely is just taste. For me I can giggle all I want and look like a fool at home rather than go to the movies and have to stifle myself. Plus I get any kind of food I want and can pause rather than leave midway through to take a piss. I prefer that experience to a theater. May not be for everyone, but I've found VR like Bigscreen to be pretty fun in lieu of actually going to a theater as well.

Hollywood needs to realize that some people's home theaters are as good as if not superior to their local theater options. And even if they weren't, you don't have to sit next to or in the same theater as a bunch of a**holes who won't shut the hell up. Or people who text or play on their phones throughout a movie. Which all in all makes home theaters vastly superior to going to the local theater.

Dude seriously underestimates the quality of the modern tech enthusiast's home theater.

Maybe if the closest IMAX to me wasn't in EFFING CANADA I'd be more inclined to agree, but the dumpy cinemas downtown? No thank you.

Again, I prefer my home theater to watching a slightly out of focus movie next to a group of obnoxious teenagers in a movie theater seat filled with stale farts while holding a full bladder and contemplating burning my shoes after I leave.

@mushywaffle: He's just freaking out because the box office returns will be so crappy that WB will get cold feet and the second part won't be greenlit. At this point that's fine with me. This pandemic should be a wake up call to the industry to cut back on these overdone films with 200+million dollar budgets that are all about VFX and zero story. Granted Dune is a great book but for God's sake it's been done twice already and both times were mediocre to downright terrible. Enough is enough.
