WB's 2022 Movies Won't Be On HBO Max Day One, New 45-Day Theater Deal With AMC Announced

Warner Bros. has now signed deals with theater chains AMC, Cineworld, and Regal to have its movies play in theaters for 45 days.

Movie theater chain AMC Entertainment has reached a deal with Warner Bros. for the movie studio's 2022 films to play in theaters for 45 days before they arrive anywhere else. In 2021, all WB movies are coming to HBO Max on day one due in part to COVID, but that's changing for 2022. This was already announced, but WB's deal with AMC hammers it home even more.

AMC chairman and CEO Adam Aron made the announcement of the new deal with AMC on Monday, according to Deadline. This follows WB's deal with Cineworld and Regal for similar 45-day theatrical windows.

All of WB's 2021 movies are launching on HBO Max in the US day-and-date with their theatrical debut, a move that has led to criticism by some filmmakers. Christopher Nolan, who has worked with WB for a long time with big projects like The Dark Knight and Tenet most recently, bashed the decision to bring movies to HBO Max on day one. He said films like The Matrix 4, Dune, The Suicide Squad, and The Many Saints of Newark are being positioned as loss leaders to help launch HBO Max and drive subscribers to the subscription service.

"In 2021, they've got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they've got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences," Nolan said. "They're meant to be out there for the widest possible audiences... And now they're being used as a loss-leader for the streaming service--for the fledgling streaming service--without any consultation. So, there's a lot of controversy. It's very, very, very, very messy. A real bait and switch."

WB had always said it would stop releasing its movies day-and-date on HBO Max in 2022. Aron, the CEO of AMC, said the theater chain is "especially pleased that Warners has decided to move away from day-and-date releases and commit to theatrical windows as well. We're having conversations with other movie studios in Hollywood."

Some of WB's big 2022 movies include The Batman, Aquaman 2, Black Adam, and Fantastic Beasts 3, among others.

AMC's stock price went below $2 per share earlier this year but it rallied mightily thanks in part to internet investors who bought up shares in an effort to stick it to short-sellers who were betting against AMC. A similar situation played out with GameStop.

Fine with me, I'll wait the 45 days. No sweaty people and no disgusting pig farting in the seat next to me.

They closed all the IMAX theaters in New England- the only experience left that I could justify forgoing the convenience of my perfectly adequate home setup. Yet they left all the dumps with the sticky floors, broken chairs and crappy screens? I understand, different owners and all that... but in my ideal scenario, they get rid of all of them BUT the IMAX.

The days of 3 theaters in a 15 mile radius are over; I feel like everyone understands that but them. I'm guessing they will continue to dilute the already shallowing pool of theater apologists, and one by one put each other out of business.

Anyone else feel that the movie theaters kind of act like a cartel? I enjoy going to a movie theater but man, please at least make it a pleasant experience. $20 for a regular admission ticket?!? Plus another $5 on top of that for parking ticket?!? Cut down on the overpriced concessions. A hot dog for $5?!? Pizza for $7?!? Smelly seats. I don't need or want a vibrating seat that's being kicked. Babies crying.

This pandemic has shown that theaters are slowly going the way of the dodo bird and has proven that most people would rather just stay home and enjoy a new movie than shelling out a crap ton of money to see one in theaters where the "experience" usually consists of being around obnoxious people, dealing with useless employees, and paying way too much for food. Screw that.

The Suicide Squad was fantastic. Especially on my 4K Tv at home with no clown on the phone or talking buffoon in the row behind me.

Guess I'll tolerate it for Flash and Black Adam.

So what was the point of getting HBO Max to begin with if they're just going to turn back on what they promised...

@JIMDOG4442002: What did they promise? They said that new WB movies were only gonna release on day one this year. Months ago, they said it wouldn’t happen next year.

@justthetip: Unless that was mentioned on some other media or news. It wasn't mentioned in the advertisement where you sign up for it. And there was a lot being advertised through different providers. Just sounds like a big mess up on their part.

@JIMDOG4442002: It was announced pretty widely back in March.

https://www.yahoo.com/now/cineworld-marks-comeback-warner-bros-162611405.html

...and many more. WarnerMedia had never promised anything regarding 2022 releases, only 2021, which it has fulfilled pretty honorably.

@zmanbarzel: Like I said that's the news/media info. A regular subscriber like me doesn't see that information signing up. That's what I've been trying to say, but it really doesn't even matter anymore moving on...

Businesses need to survive. Streaming was going to kill Movie Theaters.

I love going to the theaters. There's nothing like a massive screen and shaking sound to put the stress away.

Which is why I have a monthly pass with AMC. 20 bucks a month and watch as many movies as I want. Well... 3 per week, but I'm cool with that.

Problem is the concession prices. I get that they need to make money, but the prices are incredibly high.

@dirtydyk:

I went to see F9 last month at Citybase and for two large drinks with a large popcorn it was $17.99. I know theaters make their money on concessions but $20 is pretty high.

@pillarrocks: That is decent price.

Where I am, the cheaper ticket from a main theater chain is 11.69 + tax and a coke + popcorn will run you another 12. Add a wife and kid and I go bankrupt.

I pay 20 every month as a movie pass to watch 3 movies per week. per our price, if I watch 2 movies in a month, it pays for itself. It's worth it for me, because a watch a lot of movies after work to de-stress.

Nothing to do with the pandemic, I just really hate watching movies in theaters.

@Xero_Kaiser: Same here. Between the ticket costs, concessions, and the annoying ass people whipping out their phones in the middle of the movie as if they have somewhere more important to be ( if it's so important to be on your phone during the movie, either stay home or take it outside dammit) I can definitely wait to enjoy a film at home instead.

Theaters now literally bribing the studios to not release on streaming.

This is the final death throes of that industry, I'd ditch that AMC stock while it's still a meme

@aaronlav: I believe you and OP are clearly missing the point if you actually believe movie studios are being bought out by debt-ridden theater chains, instead of the truth that simultaneous streaming/theater releases aren't as profitable as movie studios thought it would be.

Even more so if OP/you think AMC's high price has anything to do with its fundamentals.

It's kinda crazy to me how separated the film and theater industries apparently are. Like, the theaters are 100% dependent on production companies willingness to let them exist. All these articles just make me think the theaters are starting to become almost parasitic to companies like WB, and I wonder why AMC and others don't try the Netflix route and try producing some of their own content to show.

@voldrik: Studios used to own the theaters too, but it was broken up by the government as an obvious monopoly in the 1940s.

I think they just actually repealed that last year for obvious reasons. It would be ironic if we returned to the monopoly to "save" theaters.
