Ark: Survival Evolved has been available in some form for two years now, and it's been wildly, consistently popular. It's sold many millions of copies. The game's full version launches in August for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Ahead of that, GameSpot is speaking to Jesse Rapczak, the art director and co-creative director at developer Studio Wildcard, which he co-founded. This is a rare opportunity to speak with one of the higher-ups at the studio who helps guide the direction of the hit dinosaur action game.

Hello Rapczak,

I would like to say I enjoy the game you brought to us and can't wait to see more of your content.

About my concerns for ark, I have always wondered if there are any plans to get private games more improved to allow futher player distances instead of being close to the host?

Little history, I have been playing with friends for a long time in multiplayer pvp servers on xbox, but friends of mine find it exhausting worrying about being raided day after day keeping us playing the game for hours on end. After complete annoyance from this issue, we decided to transition to pve severs but were only annoyed to see pillars across miles of land, allowing no base building. This is where we decided to do private, but we were even more annoyed to know we had to keep at a close distance to the host at all times.

I would love to see more improvements to private games to allow bigger player bases and futher base building at futher distances.

Ppl complaining about price increase. I had to pay $60 for it on PS4 launch. Not that a big of a deal, really considering you get a ton out of it.

Would've hated having the internet growing up. Many games back then on NES, Sega, SNES, and more launched at $60+

That's a shame! I've had my eye on this game for a long time, but I don't buy early access games, been burned too many times. Seeing the price double is certainly not going to bring in the sales of people like me who had this on the wish list. On top of that I just went to the steam page and also realized that not only is it $59.99, but I would also have to add the $19.99 DLC pack on top of that to have what early access people do. There's pretty much 0 chance I'm spending 2 cents shy of 80 bucks to get this now.

1.) Will the two follow-up Expansions announced for the Season Pass complete and close the Ark Storyline entirely or is there potential for additional Expansion content not included in the intial Season Pass?

1)Will BOTH consoles be able to host player dedicated servers from their PC?

As of right now the only option to have a private game with my friends (without being teathered to the host) is for one of us have a second ps4...will this change soon?

2) Also, I'm usually not very demanding as far as graphics are concerned, but is anything being done to reduce the glare on metal and on water surfaces?

This goes beyond the realm of challenging and takes away from what is, otherwise, a very fun game.

1.) Will optimization of the game be a priority going forward?

Lower to mid range hardware performance is a major turn off for this title.

2.) Will a demo ever be made available?

3.) Will the upcoming 2 expansions be $20 a piece, just like Scorched Earth?

(Base game $60, 3 $20 expansions = $120 total)

4.) Local splitscreen on PC?

I'm still convinced the only reason they are bringing it out of early access is because, it's the only way they can generate the funds to actually complete it, short of releasing more early access dlc, which they where slated for doing before. It seems to be the case with a lot of early access games that become popular, once they have a bit of money they start to alter the original plan and add additional features rather than bringing out a basic fully functioning game and then working from there. Star Citizen seems to have gone that way, the more money they make, the larger the game becomes, that doesn't actually sound like a bad thing, I just think a line should be drawn somewhere and get a finished product out to the people who have backed the original idea.

They have been doubling down on polish these last few months. I want to know if they will expand the vehicles. the ATV is the only thing in the game, but vehicles and dinos would be interesting in tandem.

I also don't think Ark is worth 60 bucks. The Doubled price was outrageous. I want to know if the Early Access People will get anything special for their support during the two years it was in Early Access.

There is apparently a story for Ark: Survival Evolved which hasn't been finished but is kindof teased to exist. Please tell us, will it be fully done by game launch because they have stated that the story would have some "Matrix like revelations" (their words in the patch notes)?

Are there any plans for ARK or future iterations to be drawn and rendered differently supporting VR better? Ie. PSVR or better performance on Oculus and Vive?

Had tons of fun playing the game and haven't even checked out more than the main island!

Odd questions, but:

* Do you ever plan on adding an overt supernatural element to the game, even as an option? Not so far as a magic system, but anything that strays from the science fiction atmosphere?

* Will there be additional combat capable vehicles and/or more of a focus on vehicular combat? We have dinosaur harnesses with built-in lasers, but anything more than that? Missiles, cannons, whatever?

Why has this game after years of being in early access only released new dinos instead of practical game content? Why was an expansion released BEFORE finishing a reasonable amount of work on the main game? Dinos were cool and all but after the effect of a shiny new dino goes away I want a game to play and Ark lacks that severely. What is gonna be done about that to justify a AAA title cost of $60?

@IanNottinghamX: The first expansion was actually a fan made map that was requested by many people to be made official. After looking at the map they agreed to make The Center a official map. Also all games cost $60 not just AAA titled games. The only ones that don't are the ones that tend to be remasters that the developers didn't spend much money into making the remaster so they can get away with putting it at $40 dollars which is how it was in the old days.

@DarkCaptain3: First of all Im not talking about The Center at all Im talking about the Scorched Earth expansion which was released last summer at $29.99. It had desert content and some new dinos and thats about it. It was nothing but a cash grab period! Also not all games cost $60. Its only the ones from the bigger console developer companies(Ubisoft,Ea, Activision. Bethesda etc) that do that with AAA titles. IF you take a look on steam games often cost $20-49 for indie titles on average (and Wildcard is supposed to be an indie developer) Its absolute bullshit to release 1/4 of a game at the cost of a full game. This game doesnt even have the basic mechanics and polish that they promised back when they first launched. So quit defending them! People like you are why them and developers/publishers continue to get away with what they do.

@IanNottinghamX: I feel no need to defend them as they did absolutely nothing wrong. Ark deserves an AAA price because of it's scope and quality, other indie games don't even hold a candle to it. And Wildcard may be a new studio without a ton of money backing it, BUT they are industry professionals, so it's not the same.

Also Scorched Earth was $19.99 at release after E3 2016 and has never been higher than that, only lower during sales.

@IanNottinghamX: You mean me? I said The Center was fan made. Scorched Earth you are right was made by the studio but its always been at least 20 bucks no more. It has had sales where its dropped below. Also we've gotten other expansions that cost nothing too.

@inebriantia: Still doesnt matter. The point still stands. It was sold for $29.99 its still being sold $19.99 on Steam. That kind of makes it worse that the devs are collecting money off of fan work.

@IanNottinghamX: This Game didn't cost me $60 i got it almost when it dropped in early access for about $15 - which to be fair wasn't a bad price - I haven't bought the expansions as I don't like the idea of releasing expansions while the base Game is still in Early Access/unfinished. But for $15 it wasn't a bad deal !

Are you sure it's ready to come out of early access? Considering there are still numerous bugs and performance issues across a number of systems, how confident are you people will pick this game up for double the price it was for early access?

Why are you one of the most expensive games on Steam? Why did you release an expansion for an unfinished game? Why did you work on several other spin-off games while this was unreleased? Are you a terrible developer?

@deathbyderping: The article above states that they JUST upped the price to $60. The price was $30 prior to that and prior to Scorched Earth which was the only paid dlc it was $15. So its typical of many Early Access games really in which if you buy early you get the best deal. They've only released 2 paid expansions as of now (The Center was free and technically was a fan based map originally that got requested to be official). The only real problem I currently found on the pc official servers is the foreigner's transferring their entire tribes to the servers just to grief the U.S. players.

@DarkCaptain3: The game, IMO, is NOT good enough to be $60, though. Keeping it at $15 was what kept their player-base "growing", and is all that the game is worth, seeing as how you have to mod it and buy expensive DLC in order to make it even remotely fun to play. The game is too expensive for what it is. They just want money at this point, that much is certain.

I played early access and found it hard to understand the game. I own it on PC but I just don't understand the appeal. My question for the dev is Will you please make a tutorial that better introduces new players to basic fundamentals and riding mechanics so we aren't just naked dudes punching things and eating limitless berries trying to figure out what to do?

I plan on purchasing the Xbox One digital edition of Ark in order to take advantage of the PC cross play function, but I noticed the only version available is the standard game. Will the explorers edition be available for purchase prior to release on Xbox Live or Windows store?

Is there a possibility at some future point that Windows 10/XBL users would be able to play with those that purchased on steam? At some point could the Windows 10 version possibly be activated on steam?

- How much do you expect Ark: Survival Evolved and its expansions to grow in popularity after the full release? Do you have a growth plot in mind for the amount of active players?

- Do you think that this is one of those games that can survive and thrive for a very long term period? Meaning, five years after release there are still plenty of players and the game will still receive updates?

- For the full release of the PC version, are you planning any additional anti-cheat measures? Do you think cheaters at this moment in time pose a serious risk for the game and people's enjoyment of it?

- Why raise the price before the actual physical release? Why not wait?

- What are your thoughts on the issue of a game that can have a built-in unbalanced bias if one comes late to a server? What are your thoughts on how to even that playing field, or make it fun enough that new people want to join an existing server?

- In making your design decisions how do you view them for the two group of players, teams on a server, vs the individual playing alone on their home system?

Example, a new item may require a huge amount of resources. A team can gather that. But what about the lone player. Is your thought that the slider controls where one can raise the return on mining resources sufficient? Or would you consider the game changing the requirements once you select Host/Local?

- Do you play the game in both modes? As a team, but also have a game where you play as a lone player?

- Do you have a preference for the future of Ark? Do you feel more effort will be put towards new maps, or trying to build in an adventure element? Or will there be a push for yet another level to the tech? Or Filling out what's there?

- Any chance of combining the maps into one world. Go from the island and sail far enough to find Scorched Earth?

- Any thoughts on adding more environments? Would that be to the existing maps, or new maps? Any thought of a new map as an opposite to Scorched Earth, something like Frigid World. ;-)

- How are you handling the very strong feelings towards your decisions? You have a large number of players, but they are very passionate, sometimes negatively so in voicing their opinions. Have they every voiced something that caused you to slap your forehead and think, "of course, they are right, why didn't I see that before. I'll need to fix it..."

- Have any of the negative comments every pushed you to curl up on the couch with a pint of ice cream and just binge your favorite show on Netflix?

- What are your thoughts on the current state of survival games? I've heard Ark being called an "Minecraft for adults." Do you feel there is still more to be explored in this genre?

- How much longer do you feel you can work on this game before you move to something else? Would you consider handing the continuing support of the game to others?

Why did you guys lied about the Xbox One X being a high-end PC with a GTX 1070+16GB Ram?

Why are rushing this game out so quickly when you already know the Early Access was BS?

Will the game be optimized this time?
