What The Hell Is Happening At Xbox? | Spot On

Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin's sudden closures are shocking and seem to go against many of Xbox's previous statements and goals.

Earlier this week, Xbox leadership made the decision to close multiple high-profile studios including Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin, the studio behind Prey and Redfall. Though the unfortunate truth is that layoffs and studio closures are becoming increasingly common in the gaming industry, the internet was quick to point out that these two in particular felt a bit... confusing. Largely because they seem to go against many of Xbox's previous statements and goals.

Back in 2023, Xbox reportedly claimed that Hi-Fi Rush had been a success for the company and it planned on reinvesting in the team in the future. The studio also admitted they had neglected to give Arkane Austin proper support, and expressed a desire to work alongside the team to improve Redfall. So what happened?

All this confusion has resulted in discussions around what the platform holder's intent for the future of Xbox is, and speculation on what part Game Pass plays in it. On this episode of Spot On, Lucy and Tamoor discuss the closures, the aftermath of them—including some confusing statements from an exec—and what the future of Xbox may look like.

Spot On is GameSpot's weekly news show in which managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest game news. Given the massive video game industry's highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle, there's always something to talk about. Unlike most news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic instead of recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

If I worked at the game developer Ninja Theory I'd be updating my resume now. I think Hellblade II will be a solid game but I don't think Hellblade II moves nearly enough units to recoup 7 years of development costs. Not only that, I don't think it gets enough downloads to justify being on Gamepass day 1 either. I think the only way the studio survives is if the game also releases on PS5. To this day the original game is still most successful on PS4 in sales.

@ebonyflame: Hell yea, I agree that Hellblade must go to PS. Who asked for that game, I am sure the motion capture and emotions in that game are superb and the studio is very talented. But who asked for a dark and dreary story-driven psycho game? PLEASE send that to other consoles to make money to give us the games we really want?

Do they not have metrics? Do they not know that the xb platform was made for bro shooter games and that COD type games make the biggest bucks? What I would do is make a modular system where games can be added modularly and skins/progress can be taken with you as you traverse the universe and worlds. Make Halo part of COD and Gear and make it modular, so that when you buy a game it means you add to the world/universe and make it grow and expand the ecosystem. Make different factions within those worlds that have different rules for gameplay, so that you can choose to be part of a custom tailored one where you enjoy playing.

@attirex: Stop doom scrolling and maybe try a book.

We deemed it a corrective year for the market. Fortunately, the decline didn't last long. We now forecast that the global games market will generate$184.0 billionin 2023, growing +0.6% year on year. It will also grow to $205.7 billion by 2026, representing a 2021-2026 CAGR of +1.3% for the total market....

Global games market in 2023 chart image

Okay, an industry worth more then movies, music, and close, to tv combined... it will still go on. I am sure. Come down off the ledge, someone will still want to make a game, and people will want to play it.

Now just ignoring continued growth with a projected growth, ... It would take years- for a yearly market to wind down from $184 B market. So let us say the industry is dead... you will still have many years worth of new games to play before its supposed demise or last breathe.

If you're open to PC, just buy an Xbox controller and use PC GamePass. The games play the same, control exactly the same, and if you have even decent hardware, they look and run better.

@nightowl358: Not to mention, PC has an open OS, you can install whatever you want. With a console, you can only do what Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft wants you to do.

Well, I was a XB die hard fan-boy, but I too am seeing the light and realize there is NO REASON to own an XB now with all these lies and BS! Nothing they say can be trusted....NOTHING!

@just1mohr: Just a reminder that Sony and Nintendo aren't your, or any developers friend. All these giant corporate entities have the same purpose, to make their shareholders the biggest return.

@corny: Yea I know man. But at this point what was tolerated has gone way beyond ridiculous with the cost of things. I am not throwing my money left and right at SERVICES anymore...done with that really quick.

Things have only gone from bad to worse with XB, and they are like a chicken without a head. With all those people and money within their grasp they cannot figure out SIMPLE things, let alone games that we want and really enjoy! They are an oversized corp chasing profits and not a passion driven collective team designing games for the art. But that used to be the case, devs were driven to create AN EXPERIENCE and something that has not been done before.

It used to be we saw innovation and superb talent in older games with older technology, some AMAZING stuff and much of that has just pufffff, vanished! It is like they stopped trying.

What is so difficult to figure out about if you put out trash, lackluster and barely passing games that you will not make the expected profit? Look at the games Sony has done, some amazing stuff, just give us that in the Bro FPS/Sci-fi/thriller space.

Forza, Halo, & Gears are still great, even though Halo has not made the technology progress we desired. But other than that, with all their resources MS has NOTHING ELSE and this is ridiculous, inexcusable, infuriating and mind blowing!!!!!

I knew that GamepASS was a cancer from the beginning and have called it that from the very beginning. They HAVE TO raise prices of it now more than ever and ultimately it will just be shut down or replaced with cloud gaming. I blame the GamepASS steering people who push that crap and give XB reasons to put out chet GP games so that you are pleased that you did not buy them....that is the whole driving model and scheme...just open your eyes and close your wallets to that!!!!!

Microsoft is sadly a victim of their own success. After thoroughly defeating Sony they've decided to defeat themselves. Truly their own worst enemy.

Hopefully Sony will learn from Microsoft's mistakes.

@mdignishere: At what point was Microsoft defeating Sony? Even Xbox 360, which was their most successful console, was eventually outsold by the PS3.

@mdignishere: xbox has always been the loser and failure in the gaming industry. They tried being sega dreamcast 2.0, look where that got them, LOSS, xbox brand has always been sub par with a few descent games here and there, but over all garbage. They need to just hang it up, become a supporter in the industry rather then a competitor. They have proven they CANNOT hold their own. Only from what Microsoft as a whole has earned.

@mdignishere: When in the world did they defeat Sony? No Xbox has ever outsold a PlayStation. Even the 360 was outsold by the PS3, which launched a year later and had a horrible launch. Get some sleep, dude. You’ve clearly been awake so long that it has made you delusional.

I see no point to Xbox when you can just about all the good games that Xbox has can be played on PC.

It seems like the X-Box brand has never recovered from the crippling stupidity at the top ever since the shit-show of a launch for the X-Box One. The only real losers in all of this are all the talented developers who do everything right and still get fucked over, and gamers who invest and build communities around these new IPs that get the axe.

I think you're right about XBox putting more of its games on other platforms. However, if they do that, what does that do to the hardware part of XBox? They've publicly admitted that last gen was the crucial one for hardware. Now, too many gamers are tied to their digital purchases for most people who only own a single console to switch. That's why they're focused on making XBox games available in as many places as possible. However, not too long ago there were multiple reports of XBox working on a new version of the Series X, and then Bond made a statement alluding to an eventual next gen console. New console development and production isn't cheap, and they're usually initially sold at a loss. That 's not going to help their bottom line. It seems like there's disagreement/disarray within XBox leadership about the future direction of the company.

@WarGameJunkie: I've said this a million times, but Microsoft is the spoiled rich kid that is trying to stay relavent,so they buy most expensive and crash the industry. Nintendo and Sony are still majority focused on physical, xbox is failing I'm every direction. So crash the physical and push more and more digital. It doesn't surprise me, in 5 years tops, xbox will be gone and just be a service like netflix on everything.
