What's Going On With Batman Games? | Spot On

The Dark Knight is finally returning--but only on Meta Quest 3. Is the golden age of Batman video games truly over?

It's hard to believe it's been nearly a decade since Rocksteady Studios concluded its Arkham trilogy with Batman: Arkham Knight. And yet, it's somehow even harder to believe that same studio released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League just a few months ago, which unfortunately tells you just about everything you need to know about the poorly-received action shooter.

Earlier this week, however, Camouflaj Games announced it had begun its own venture into Gotham City for a new Batman game, Batman: Arkham Shadow. The only catch? It's a Meta Quest 3 exclusive. With all this in mind, we're left with one, big question: is the golden age of Batman video games over?

On this week's Spot On, Tam and Lucy discuss what's next for the Dark Knight, if VR is a smart move for his next installment, if Rocksteady can bounce back from Kill the Justice League, and if WB Montreal--the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins--could return to helm the series. The pair share their thoughts and delve into how Arkham Shadow could connect to Arkham Origins in this Batman-centric episode.

Spot On is GameSpot's weekly news show in which managing editor Tamoor Hussain and senior producer Lucy James talk about the latest game news. Given the massive video game industry's highly dynamic and never-ending news cycle, there's always something to talk about. Unlike most news shows, Spot On will dive deep into a single topic instead of recapping all the news. Spot On airs each Friday.

What WB did to Batman is such a blatant disregard to fans.

Rocksteady gets the blame too...The Founders of Rocksteady quit.

Let that sink in to what they wanted to do..The Suicide game was failed garbage even before SweetBabyInc sealed the coffin..

~WB shoulda did a complete 180 on Batman after the failed Gothm Nights ,edioce failure.. Gotham Nights was so bad that 3 sep attempts to get sucked in all failed.

Rocksteady 100% knew the game would fail & doubled down.

This is the downside of gaming going mainstream popular.

The Nemesis System was PERFECT for the next Batman game.

Yet those Tards @Monolith decided to make a WonderWOman game

instead & piss off 75% of their fans...

~~I been saying from the Jump that Arkham Batman using the NEMESIS

randomness was a match made in heaven...

What happened to Rocksteady Should be a lesson for all companies that do not appreciate their employees and treat them as disposable commodities.

I just wanted them to take the Nemesis System and incorporate it in their own game.

Most of Rocksteady's talent left to form a new studio with the founders. Guessing they got forced out of their own studio. We probably won't ever get to see a new Arkham game that's as good as the OG games were, however, there's a chance the new studio created by Rocksteady's founders may make a spiritual successor to the Arkham trilogy.

@xultima226: Dude they could Use another popular IP for it since DC wouldn't allow them to humiliate WB/Rocksteady lol..

Can you imagine the LOLZ those OG Rocksteady dudes got at Suicide Squad being such a failure that it's openly hated... Man they were dancing around for sure.

@sippio: If Disney could get over themselves, and give Hundred Star Studios(The RS co-founders' new studio) carte blanche to make a new cinematic game universe, they'd print money. That's highly unlikely to happen, but I will keep my fingers crossed that someday the industry will get out of its own way.

Let's be real. The main reason DC is doing so badly right now compared to Marvel. is because of the reason DC will always play second fiddle to Marvel forever. Characters.

I'm going to speak forever one when I say, DC really only has Batman & the characters tied to Batman comics. When they try to do any other character. It's either cringe garbage that everyone hates (Green Lantern, Steel, and Supergirl films come to mind), or it's good but no one really cares (DC animated films come to mind). Meanwhile, with Marvel, they can make a bad Marvel film and do good (The X-Men films, and the Fox F4 films), and they can make them accurate and good (The MCU).

And this is the same trend with games. The Best DC superhero games are literally all Batman. Marvel has legendary statues Spider-man, Hulk, X-men, Marvel Team ups, and cross-over games. DC ONLY has Arkham, and that's literally it. It doesn't help that the worst superhero game of all time is made by DC.
