What's Next After Xbox Scorpio? Microsoft Already Has Ideas

Project Scorpio comes out in 2017, but Microsoft is already looking beyond that, at least somewhat.

Microsoft is already thinking about what might come next after the Project Scorpio console. Responding to a tweet today, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said Microsoft has "ideas" for what this could be.

As you might have guessed, he didn't share anything specific. His comment came in response to a question about whether or not he thought Scorpio could be "the last console generation" for Xbox (via GameZone).

No Caption Provided

Xbox marketing executive Aaron Greenberg said in a recent interview that he thinks the idea of a console generation, as it's traditionally known, might be over. His line of thinking is that Xbox is becoming more of a family of devices, where the content and peripherals you own work across a variety of hardware.

"For us, we think the future is without console generations," he said. "We think that the ability to build a library, a community, to be able to iterate with the hardware--we're making a pretty big bet on that with Project Scorpio. We're basically saying, 'This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices."

This might be a new idea for console gaming, but it's basically the status quo on PC and other devices. When you get a new phone or buy a new computer, you don't lose access to things like games and music, as you did between previous console generation jumps like from Xbox 360 to Xbox One. Microsoft is bringing this to the console space (and Sony is as well with its new PlayStation Neo console).

You shouldn't read too far into Spencer's comments, as it would be a bigger story if Microsoft was not thinking about what's coming next.

Xbox head of operations Dave McCarthy previously talked about the strides Microsoft is making in the console space with the Scorpio device.

"I think the really important thing for people to understand is the nut we've tried to crack here is ensuring we hit hardware innovation at the same time we ensure compatibility," he explained in June about Scorpio. "That term of an upgrade is gone. We are wiping out those generational boundaries. As a gamer, it's pretty cool. Because then I know the games I buy and play today and the controllers I use today are going to work on that machine of tomorrow. And that's the real major step-change."

In other news about Project Scorpio, Microsoft has confirmed it won't have any exclusive games, except for virtual reality titles, which seemingly contradicts what the company said before.

Project Scorpio, or whatever Microsoft ends up calling it, is slated to arrive in holiday 2017. Microsoft isn't the only platform-holder working on new hardware, as Sony's PlayStation Neo is also on the way and could be formally announced during an event in New York City next month. Nintendo's NX, which is also only a codename, will come out in March 2017; it supposedly runs on "industry-leading" technology.

I've got some ideas too, Sunset Overdrive 2 being foremost among them...come on Phil, MS has money to burn; I couldn't care less how many of the plebes didn't buy the game, best exclusive since Uncharted 2 and Mass Effect 1...make it happen and not that ridiculous Marvel junk they're working on now!!! Focus on bringing the best games.....games....just games.

So if it took almost a year to have next-gen titles... when do we get titles that will support all of Scorpios hardware. Or are we just going to sit there and go wow look at my draw distance, and see those pixels, they are finely 1080p. I don't care... PS4 graphics are good enough for now... that'll remain the benchmark for games until Scorpio can sell enough units to justify "remastering" the games for it. Until that happens it'll be as exciting as PC ports...

@alaskancrab: You're really confused, the games wont have to be remastered. They will more than likely be updated to take take advantage of the scorpio and the Neo. I just dont know why you dudes hate on Xbox one so much and act like the Ps4 is so much more powerful, its getfing old. Both the Ps4 and Xbox one cant get there biggest titles to 60fps so that makes them both in the same boat. The one up the Xbox one S has on the Ps4 is that games can be upscaled to 4k with HDR so games look noticeably better.

As long as it doesn't require a specific propriety device or require constant online or in particular streaming I'm happy. If it will become an app/client much like steam but that works on your future smart tvs, pc etc, that would be great. And hopefully sony does the same and you can have whatever hardware you like to your own specifications and tweak the performance to your liking.

Then again they only said there will be no more console generations... that could still mean they will dish out new consoles like phones, just considering it the same generation. In wich case I think that is bullcrap as I'd say that alot of the phones are new generations making generational leaps in tech.

@kadaverhagga: The devs would only have to release patches for games to take advantage of the power of the Neo and Scorpio. It wouldnt be hard at all for devs to do that which is basically what Panella is saying. This marks the end of console contraints for devs so this is good for console gamers on all sides. You know if MS is doing this Sony will follow.

@kentray1985: Sure but just like phones wich is the device they all try to compare this to, eventually the hardware is simply to weak to be patched or perform adequately. It won't bear the new OS upgrades or certain apps/games etc.
They might not try to reinvent the wheel every generation and finally stick to x86 like pc has been doing for decades, but like pc you still have generational leaps where stronger hardware can still play older stuff for the most part, but you still have to upgrade to a newer gen console eventially.
I think anyone saying "I'm fine with the current frames and graphics" and thinking they can stick with that is going to get a surprise.

I can provide screen shots along with gamertags... still think I'm lying? Why don't you ask @suicidesn0wman He supports the Xbox brand even more than you do (due to his insane library) and he wouldn't lie.

So...that leaves only one liar *cough cough* fanboy *cough cough* [clears throat] xD

So you don't like playing the superior console versions of games either?

@7tizz: You really can't call out PS fanboys when you're exactly the same as they are. You say you don't like their exclusives, I say you didn't give them a fair shot.

@louixiii: I don't know of any that don't require live. I really haven't had much time to play games anyway. I did maybe one race in Project CARS and 10 matches of Titanfall 2 this weekend. Played a little Destiny earlier in the week. Mostly I've been doing data entry for gamelust, that database aint gonna fill itself. I've got 1400 games added so far and I'm about halfway through adding X1/PS4 titles, haven't even started WiiU games yet.

If you get live before Gears comes out we'll have to play some Gears 4 co-op. I don't really do MP anymore though, dodge/roll/shotty isn't fun to me.

@suicidesn0wman: don't feel so bad. firstSTREET has been consuming most of my time. After talking to close to 50 old people in a day, I don't feel like doing much but eating and going to sleep. Haven't even played SFV much. Plus I'll be doing the real estate course soon and it's pretty time consuming but hey...10-30k checks a month is worth it.

We're basically saying, 'This isn't a new generation; everything you have continues forward and it works.' We think of this as a family of devices."

I have to question and doubt this statement. You're saying it will be considered one final generation, and all new games will continue to work on the existing XBO because there are no exclusives on Scorpio other than VR? So in 20 years time, there will still be games that must be able to run on hardware that is 4 generations old and be as outdated as the SNES is by today's standards?

If they're not going to cut support for the original XBO at some point, the newer games are going to suffer, and devs will have to continue doing cert for 5 or 6 different versions of hardware for each game. And that's just on the Xbox platform alone. If Sony follows suit, that's another 5 or 6 versions they have to make sure their games are optimized for.

@godfather830:

What's special about that? That's just backwards compatibility. The PS2, PS3, Wii and Wii U had that also.

Not for 20 years, but in 20 years time, do I really want to be playing games that are 20 years old anyway?

Also, they said there can't be any exclusives on the Scorpio other than VR. That means the games in 20 years time MUST work on first gen XB1. I just don't see why they should. That's going to hold back future games if they have to scale so far back that they can run on 20 year old hardware. Games 20 years ago were SNES games. Compare that to Uncharted 4. In 20 years time, I can't even imagine how far more advanced and how many TFLOPS they will be pushing compared to Uncharted 4. But they still have to have a "legacy graphics" mode that makes it run on 2013 hardware. Can you imagine an Uncharted 4 that can scale all the way down to 16 bit graphics, have tiny environments, and must load every screen you cross? That's going to make it harder for game devs, because they're going to have to include multiple versions of textures to use depending on the hardware, and maybe the size of the open worlds have to be scaled down or else the older machines won't be able to run them.

hang on i am missing something here - ideas for the next - everything carries over. so all games even the ones on the next device will still be able to play that same game on the previous so newer game plays on the scorpio and the new new device. one disc fits both - not like how we had eample - destiny on ps3/4 360/x1 etc this time just one disc fits all (like neo?)

so one part of the community will be playing the same game as the previous community but on the beefed up machine.

accessories brand new controller or kinect maybe a vr i dunno , will there be patches so those designed for new new device can go back and play the scorpio

so.........

is it a pc hybrid console but instead of swapping parts out you buy entire new device - but dont have to as it will still work on the scorpio the previous device.

why not go pc

Well, duh. They have R&D departments for a reason. Most of them operate 10 years ahead of what is actually available. Within 5 years, you've got protyping, testing, and market research.

By not eventually having exclusives this will cripple the industry because developers can't innovate if they have to keep their product working on such old hardware. But maybe if my dreams come true then this will push more devs to PC!

I'm not seeing Xbox One's strategy. I don't understand it. I still have my X1 and was a die-hard fanboy but this aggressive focus on hardware might address the future of gaming but what happens until then? 2,000 versions of 4K dead rising and forza? What ever happened to crackdown 3 and innovating how that game optimizes the "cloud"? Quantum Break was a major failure. ReCore looks pretty cool but that's about it. I'm getting so fed up with Spencer. They had many opportunities to aggressively addressing Sony's campaign with the 1080p debate and Uncharted, but rather than answering with high quality games, they present a road map for hardware enhancements. Since then, I've thoroughly enjoyed Uncharted and No Man's Sky, although it didn't live up to the hype, it's selling systems because that's what games do. They sell systems. Systems don't sell systems. Sony has been a lot more intelligent. How do I know this? Because I don't really care about their Neo announcement in September because I'm currently enjoying the games on Ps4. That's how it should be. I shouldn't have to pop in a game like Quantum Break then regret the $60 investment and have nothing to turn to other than a brand new $300/400 dollar slim version of the same system that produced this shitty Quantum Break game. GAMES, SPENCER! WE WANT GAMES!

@caseyrybek: First let me say that I play on PS4, XBOX, and PC with GoG as my main source of games, Steam second. (I feel like these comment sections are so toxic that if you don't mention what platforms you play on first you'll just be called a fanboy, or something less pleasant.) Also, this is just my own observation after discussing this exact topic with my lecturers and classmates recently. (I study game design.)

So at the start of this gen MS messed up. Massively. As a fan of XBOX and gaming it was very disheartening to watch. They've changed their tune in a massive way since then with Spencer. He seems like a good guy and pretty much saved the day. But it looks like they won't be able to catch PS4. They are clearly still doing very well as far as sales are concerned, but second place is second place. Shareholders will be asking why all of those PS4 players didn't buy their machine instead.

The only thing they can do to make sure this doesn't happen again is to change how the market works. Move away from traditional console generations so the industry is focused on a player's platform of choice (XBL, XBOX & PC Play Anywhere, cross-platform play), turn the XBOX into an XBL Machine similar to the Seam Machines, and then go back to the shareholders and say that they now have all of the XBL community to sell to, plus potentially the entire PC community. Combining those two communities would technically mean that they have more users than their main competitors. Then again, it would be a big gamble to assume that you can attract a significant enough number of PC players to make it worth while. Or maybe they've already done their homework and they know they can do it. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and folk just like to try new things.

@shepherd_irl: Thanks, I appreciate your perspective and sounds like you're a lot closer to these industry moves. although I always appreciate the next "flashy toy" this is all happening quickly and for the wrong reasons AND I still don't feel anything has made up for the $500 I put into X1 when it first released. It's the first console that's left me empty and regretful...well no, I take that back. I had the Amiga CD32 but my dad bought that for me when it was first released and I never had the heart to tell him it was shit. all of it. And maybe the Neo Geo...Panasonic 3DO...okay, so there's many!!!! In contrast, when I traded one of my X1s in for the PS4 uncharted bundle I immediately thought, "this is what the hype is all about" and did not regret my purchase. Amazing really. A 10 hour campaign and my purchase was immediately justified. But, I was also thinking, I wondered if Remedy didn't put so much effort into new IP, could they have created something comparable (or better than Uncharted? Yes, I believe so. Have you and your peers discussed Sony's marketing strategy or how the PS4 community made the resolution (1080 v 720) debate into essentially (or maybe...) was factor that caused MS to question their next gen tech? My point is, MS seems to be taking large leaps of faith without coming close to optimizing that system I purchased for $500 and instead saying, oh yeah, you want 1080! well F&$! YOU SONY we're going to give you 4K with X1S!!!! As a gamer, I'm sitting back and thinking, wow you've blown that way out of proportion. How about, instead of making me pay another $400, create a better game that CAN DO 1080/60fps that's only going to cost me $60. Curious for your perspective on this. This is what has me more frustrated than anything else. I've been attacked numerous times by counter arguments that state, "every console goes through this enhancement 3-4 years at a time, stop crying!" I realize this but consoles usually reach their performance peak before it happens. Look at what Rockstar did with GTA for example. With X1, it feels unfinished.

@caseyrybek: I'm not that big a fan of Uncharted, I'm more of an RPG player, but holy hell that last game blew my mind. Before that I had only played 2 and 3, and I really enjoyed them both too so I don't really know what was holding me back.

To answer your questions, I remember just after this gen launched, 4k was just beginning to pick up speed and a lot of people were starting to talk about it. I remember thinking at the time that it felt like both Sony and MS had shipped out just before they could really do anything about it, and I remember saying to a friend that I can't imagine this entire generation passing without some kind of a reaction from the big console duo in relation to 4k.

In hindsight, between that and VR, I think there was always going to be a 'mid-gen refresh' as Sony are calling it. It was 2011 before I bought a PS3 slim, five years after launch, and as I was buying a new console anyway I definitely would not have minded if that slim was an upgraded PS3.5. Saying that, if I knew there was a NEO and a Scorpio on the way would I have picked up the originals early on? I'm not so sure. Maybe I'd just have gotten one of them.

Either way, MicroSoft are going further than a refresh, trying to phase out console generations altogether. The Scorpio is a beast. It's a very impressive machine by console standards, but it's going to be very expensive. I'll be surprised, assuming it has the specs we've already heard about, if the NEO costs more than €450.00 - €500.00. And if you play on PS4 already you don't even need it anyway. All you need going forward is the VR headset, and that's only if you want VR. But Scorpio will be at least €550.00. MS are all but warning people that it will be expensive with all of their 'Premium Product' comments, so nobody can complain when the price is finally announced, but as I understand it not all VR titles will run on the original XBOX One, so if you want to stay on XBL and play VR you'll need to upgrade to either a new XBOX or a capable PC.

It's also important to note that core and hardcore gamers do not make up the entire market. A lot of people play casual. Most of these players don't visit gaming news sites very often, they don't know what the E3 show is much less stay up all night watching it, and they don't care why these new consoles are being released. If these people decide they want one of the new machines, many of them are going to look at the NEO price, then at the Scorpio price, and make the decision with their wallets.

There are 22 people in my class + 3 lecturers. All of us play on PC, and about half play on console. One guy in my class hates consoles. He just bought his €2000.00 rig a few months ago and doesn't understand why anyone would want to play a game on a platform that makes it 'look like an Atari 2600 title'. His words. He's a bit of a mule about most things so there's no talking to him. We were discussing marketing strategies one day but even he agreed that MS are taking risks. He said something like 'Sony are playing this gen like puppeteers'. This was before Scorpio was announced, btw. Essentially Sony just have to wait and see what MS do, and if it doesn't work they just do the opposite. Simples. Then when Sony 'get it right' MS have to try something new. Although to be fair to Sony, those new IPs they announced at E3 were impressive so it's not like they're resting on their laurels.

Still, so far this gen, mainly because of the mess MS made at the start, it does look like Sony haven't had to try very hard at all. At E3 this year they hardly even talked. They just kept showing gameplay trailers for new IP like it was nothing. MS were showing some good stuff too (Gears of War!!! gimme gimme gimme), but they've gotten themselves into a position where they have to take the time to explain everything they do now so nobody thinks they're trying to pull a fast one. If MS gets delayed exclusivity on a title most core folk freak out. If Sony do the same thing most core folk don't care. At least that's how it seems in the forums and in the chats. It's all reactionary.

Saying all of this, if you look at what MS were originally proposing for the XBOX One a few years ago, it was looking like an XBL Machine back then before everyone raged at them for the DRM/always online mess. They were talking at the time about moving away from discs completely and just going with digital. Maybe they've had this plan all along. The Scorpio obviously will use discs, but the phasing out of console gens talk feels familiar when I think about what they wanted to do with XBOX 3 years ago. The Scorpio might not have come out of nowhere. If they want to go that way that's fine. Hopefully Nintendo and Sony will stick with traditional consoles. The market is certainly there and trading in an old game is always a nice option to have.

Anyway, hopefully that wasn't too long winded and didn't go too far off point.

@sladakrobot: There were parts of it that could have been a good game but it was spread too thin and lacked depth in every single medium it used. Oddly, it's as divisive as No Man's Sky. Difference is, it (NMS) has a stronger core and will eventually be enhanced to be a great experienced. QB is well....always going to be the same game and most likely forgotten about along with Remedy who has lost their VP and will most likely dissolve like many dev companies that are too large and dump millions into a new IP then lose twice as much since it's release. In many ways, this was a significant milestone for MS/X1 because it was supposed to showcase and support the concept of X1's multimedia strengths....but it was blah....What happened after QB? a whole lot of nothing, then E3 that was preceded by delays with Scalebound and Crackdown 3 but announcements of new hardware.

They just need to develop whatever it is that can play amazing games. Whether it's a console, PC or some other platform I don't really care. Just develop that lol.

I have got this feeling that MSFT are trying to save costs by hinting that they might not be building consoles in the future as the hardware is a major capital cost expenditure.

@maximo: They aren't hinting that they aren't making any more consoles in the future, they are saying that they will just be better versions of the One that will continue to play all your games.

@dlCHIEF58: But it's a giant rip off. You're right, they continue with their rhetoric about "all the same games" or "all in the same family" but what they're not saying is, Developers will have complete freedom to utilize Scorpio's power for other things instead of 4K. If they do this and they certainly will, there will be games exclusively optimized for Scorpio.

@dlCHIEF58: The problem there is, you say "better version of the X1" and think Scorpio, but most gamers immediately think PC.

@Barighm: Nope - I for one refuse to have a Windows based PC in my house and no interest at all in PC gaming or the hassles that go along with it. I am not the only one with that attitude.

I am personally glad vr will be project Scorpio exclusive. This way they ensure all the bugs are gone and deliver the best quality possible, instead of rushing in with a substandard device on an underpowered system like they could have done and what PlayStation is currently doing.

Besides, vr is just a fad, you can now buy a bracket at your local Walmart to strap your phone to your face for, so called, "VR" effects... God, people are stupid! I can't wait until VR headsets end up in the pawn shop junk bins like kinect, rock band and guitar hero instruments, Wii boards and peripherals, pc flight sticks, Ps move controllers, Dreamcast maracas, Donkey congo bongos, NES power gloves, Bluetooth ear mounted microphones, 3D TV, movies and games, and the virtual boy. Remember, before taking it to the pawn shop, be sure to pack your VR unit in beanie babies and not hard items like furby, cabbage patch dolls or pet rocks.

@coffeehigh: If there were Dreamcast maracas laying around in pawn shops or thrift stores (which there isn't unfortunately), I'd be picking up all I could for Samba de Amigo. Same with Virtual Boy as those can bring a pretty penny on eBay.

@dlCHIEF58: You need to go back in time to just after these items were released. I bought a virtual boy for $29.99 at Toys r us back in the day, and have seen units at garage sales and thrift stores for well under $50. Also picked up Samba de Amigo maracas at the Gulf Breeze Florida flea market for under $5 as recently as last summer. That's called game chasing, never pay ebay prices

@coffeehigh: based on what exactly? There's been nothing but positive impressions with PS4's Arkam VR at Gamescom. Surely, you'll get a greater level of fidelity from Scorpio's VR but that's still over a year away.

@caseyrybek: there were nothing but positive reviews for playstation move and kinect back when they were demoed... that doesn't mean that they were going to be great or are still great today
